Department of Local Government and Housing

8th Issue, 2007 From the Editorial Team by Xolani Luthuli

007 has gone so fast and it's hard to believe that we are only left with a couple of weeks to end off this year. I also know that some of you may 2have been wondering what happened to your newsletter, APOLOGIES for publishing late. The main reason for this is that the Department and the MEC for Local Government and Housing, Mr, Qubudile Richard Dyantyi has been all over the Province handing over houses, returning dignity to communities we serve. MEC Dyantyi and his Xolani Luthuli from the departmental team have also been meeting with provincial residents to try Communication Team and find solutions to problems and challenges facing the delivery of services.

During these visits, one main message accompanied by a very firm warning that our MEC has been spreading is that of some people who have been given houses by government, but after about 2 or 3 years, the same people sell their houses next nothing and then go on protests marches accusing government of not doing anything for them to improve their quality of life. Editorial Team: This is a criminal act and thus, the department will not hesitate to bring in the Editor: police to charge and arrest those who abuse the system. The message is Xolani Tyilana very clear “DO NOT SELL YOUR HOUSES GIVEN TO YOU BY GOVERNMENT Tel: 021 483 2686 AND THEN CLAIM THAT YOU HAVE NOT BENEFITTED FROM GOVERNMENT” Content: It's also that time of the year where municipal performance excellence will Xolani Luthuli be recognized and applauded – 2007 VUNA AWARDS. This time the Tel: 021 483 3605 awards will take place in Paarl. May the best municipalities win and get to Debbie Francis represent us at national level, later this year. The Department requested DAG to unblock them and come with the new strategies to complete blocked projects.

In conclusion, as we approach the festive season, there will be a lot of festivities and happiness. But it is also a time where fires seem to ravage a lot of informal settlements during this period. The department will be embarking on an extensive FIRE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN in December- January, to warn and inform the public about the dangers of fire during this period.
