NO NAY NEVER FILLIES ON OFFER AT OBS THE WEEKLY WRAP: FROM By Kelsey Riley FAMINE TO FEAST The American breeze-up sector squeezed in its OBS March sale before much of the world came to a standstill due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the 2-year-old sales are back in business in the U.S. this week with the rescheduled OBS Spring Sale in Ocala, Florida. The sale boasts an international flair with two daughters of No Nay Never set to go under the hammer, both consigned by Jimbo and Torie Gladwell=s Top Line Sales. But now that the shock of racing's shutdown has been completely erased by the return, finally, of racing in Ireland to complete a European full set, the panic is not what to write but how on earth to keep up with it all. No complaints here. The last few weeks since the French return in mid-May and Britain just over a week ago have provided a glut of fine action, with three feast days served up at the Rowley Mile over the weekend. The Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup was rebranded and relocated but nevertheless provided a mouthwatering line-up of talent which made the tour de force by Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) all the more impressive. It having been only his 10th racecourse appearance points to the fact that Ghaiyyath may have some fragilities but, now approaching full maturity, his best days could still lie ahead. Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer said the influence of Hussonet blood in Australia is no real surprise when you look at the quality of his own pedigree and how well it matches as an outcross to the dominant sirelines in Australia. "I think it's probably had so much success because it's such a wonderful outcross. He's a direct son of Mr. Prospector out of a great mare and that in itself has stood him in good stead," Freyer said. "He was a great sire himself. He only came to us midway through his career, but he was a tremendous stallion, capable of getting a champion, and his daughters are perfectly suited to all the good sires of recent times."

"Pierro is a great example of that. He thrives on the Redoute's Choice-line mares. Maxfield Skipping Belmont cont. from p1 ATo go in the Belmont, we=d have to come back in four weeks, ship to Belmont and go around one turn versus giving him extra time,@ Bell continued. AThe progression is really most important and we really want to keep him at two turns. He has trained at Keeneland, the Blue Grass is a great race and we are trying to gradually step up in competition and hopefully be competitive in the second half of the year.@

Maxfield | Coady There will be eight weeks between the Blue Grass and the GI . Bell said it has yet to be decided if Maxfield will have a race between the two races. AHe has obviously shown that he can run well fresh,@ Bell said. After his win in the GI Claiborne Breeders= Futurity at Keeneland, Maxfield was considered a leading contender for the GI TVG Breeders= Cup Juvenile, but had to miss the race when it was discovered he needed surgery to remove an ankle chip. After seven months off, he overcame traffic problems to win the Matt Winn by one length. AWe are just happy to have him back and to have him show what we had all seen in the mornings and in his earlier races,@ Bell said. AHe just showed a tremendous mental outlook on racing that was probably more advanced than his physical outlook. To see the two come together after such a long layoff is a credit to the horse and a credit to [trainer] Brendan [Walsh].@ With more than 12 weeks to go before the Sept. 5 Derby, Maxfield is widely recognized as one of the top two or three threats for what will now be the second race in the Triple Crown. It=s been a tough couple of weeks for the Belmont. Bob Baffert was considering Nadal (Blame) and Charlatan (Speightstown), but both have been injured and are out of the race. It appears that GI Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law (Constitution) will be a heavy favorite in the mile-and-an-eighth race. Cont. p6 BRODY'S CAUSE

NO DEAL FOR ARLINGTON MEET: >ILLINOIS IS BLEEDING HORSE POPULATION RIGHT NOW=

Arlington Park | Horsephotos by T.D. Thornton Weekend-long contract negotiations that were supposed to result in a last-ditch effort to salvage the 2020 meet at Arlington Park did not result in a deal that was acceptable to both the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association (ITHA) and track management. The chief sticking point, as it has been since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, is Arlington=s insistence on a two-year contract, while the ITHA wants to ink terms for only one year. As a result, the Illinois Racing Board (IRB) on Monday morning declined to vote on awarding race dates to Chicago=s premier Thoroughbred venue. It had convened a Aspecial@ meeting just for that purpose June 5, then carried the meeting over to June 8 pending the result of the weekend talks. Now, with the contract still more than five months overdue according to state law, the IRB won=t take up the issue again until its regularly scheduled June 18 meeting. AEverybody should be aware that Illinois is bleeding horse population right now,@ said IRB commissioner Thomas McCauley, who mediated the weekend negotiation sessions. Cont.p7 TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 7 OF 17 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • JUNE 9, 2020

AHorsemen just don=t know what=s happening, and the main reason we wanted the special meeting was to get some certainty before the regular meeting 10 days from now. AWe feel strongly that every day that the uncertainty remains is a hardship to Illinois horsemen and everybody who depends on the industry in Illinois for a livelihood,@ McCauley continued. AI urge all of us to keep that in mind as a backdrop to, in my view, critically urgent negotiations and the dire need for a conclusion one way or the other. So [an IRB decision on dates] won=t go beyond June 18 in my mind. And I=m sorry that it=s going that long. But it can=t possibly go any further than that-- there won=t be any horses left.@ McCauley and the IRB=s executive director, Domenic DiCera, sat in on talks between the two parties at a neutral location (Hawthorne Race Course) for five hours on Saturday. The ITHA was represented by its executive director, David McCaffrey, and trainer and board of directors member Chris Block. Arlington president Tony Petrillo represented the track. Larry Rivelli, the perennial standings-topping trainer at Arlington, also participated. ADuring the course of the first four hours, a number of issues were resolved, and at the four-hour mark we had one left,@ McCauley explained. ASo there was optimism that that would be resolved.@ The two sides agreed on a 30-date race meet with no purse money allocated to stakes races for 2020. AIf it were only going to be a one-year agreement, I think it would be largely done and the parties could proceed,@ McCauley said. But, he added, AIt was very important to Arlington to have a two-year agreement, and so the focus of the conversation was, >Well, what happens in 2021?=@ McCauley said the crux of the talks came down to Athe issue of how much of the [net] purse money generated by handleYwould be used for purposes of funding overnight purses, and then what portion [and when] would [that money] be used to fund stakes races.@ McCauley said that, in particular, Arlington wanted assurance that it could schedule two of its three calling-card Grade I stakes, the Arlington Million and Beverly D., in 2021. The two parties met again Sunday for another 2 1/2 hours to focus on that one issue, followed by a flurry of emails and calls that went into night and early Monday morning. Yet, McCauley said, AWe remain unresolved on that one issue.@ After hearing McCauley=s briefing, IRB chairman Daniel Beiser said, AI guess it=s safe to say that there is no agreement in place at this point. Therefore, we will not be acting on this request today. We=ll be deferring it to the next meeting, which is June 18. Hopefully these talks will continue, and there will be a resolution to this.@ Cont. p8 TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 8 OF 17 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • JUNE 9, 2020

THE TDN DERBY TOP 12 FOR JUNE 9 the Law=s advantage. He=s generally an alert gate-breaker, but in three of his past four stakes this $110,000 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred sales graduate has run up into pockets of trouble, and he had to do some unnecessary maneuvering to extricate himself. His GI Florida Derby (96 Beyer) was a breakthrough exception though, so perhaps that relatively clean stalking victory is evidence that this colt is progressing to a point where he can apply sustained pressure to top-notch sophomores from start to finish. Tiz=s ultra-high level of confidence is what has set him apart from his peers so far, and although it remains an open question as to whether he is a true 10-furlong threat, that=s not the task at hand in the Belmont S. His commanding four-wide sweep off the turn put him over the top three-sixteenths from the wire, and he determinedly ramped up the pressure while not finishing up overly extended. Why wasn=t the win enough to vault him into the No. 1 spot? Even though Honor A.P. seems better suited to 10 furlongs, Tiz the Law has the been-there-done-that body of work that is replete with instances in which he has overcome adversity against top competition over various dirt surfaces. Honor A.P. is just getting going (four starts, all in California), and he caught a sizable break on Saturday when Authentic (Into Mischief), the 1-2 favorite, broke flat-footed and outward, then was wide on both turns chasing the pace. Maxfield=s long-awaited comeback race off a six-month layoff (ankle chip surgery) was well worth the wait. This Godolphin homebred truly looked to be out of the hunt on the far turn of the May 23 GIII Matt Winn S. at Churchill Downs, yet he overcame traffic into the first bend, having to keep touch mid-pack behind a tepid pace (:23.98, :48.21), and losing ground on both turns before locking in and focusing at the eighth pole to blow by an outward-drifting rival. Max launched into a sustained half-mile drive against a fairly deep field of foes, building serious momentum before cresting late in the lane and being taken in hand by Jose Ortiz to coast clear by a measured length. This colt=s dynamic, breakaway victory in the GI Claiborne Breeders= Futurity at Keeneland last October still resonates as the most visually impressive two-turn juvenile stakes of 2019. Although his Winn effort lacked the same electrifying panache, the difference was more than made up for in terms of the patiently handled power he displayed in a spot where Max most likely wasn=t honed to his sharpest potential. He remains undefeated, and his placement at number three on this list represents the line of demarcation between the A-list contenders and every other sophomore trying to earn elite-level status. That last one doesn=t mean we would ever want to have something like this happen, but since it is here, there really is no OPEN LETTER TO THE way to go but forward. INDUSTRY Dear Friends & Fellow Horsemen: Our industry stands at a crossroads; if we continue to accept the status quo, it could very well mean the end of Thoroughbred racing in the U.S. as we know it in the next few years. It's time for tangible changes to finally put the welfare of our horses and the experience of our owners and racing fans first and foremost. We propose four key areas of reform as detailed below to revitalize our sport. Each of us signing this letter has different perspectives; we may not agree with 100% of every word or every suggestion, but we recognize in the words of Benjamin Franklin, "We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately."

1) Make Thoroughbred racing a truly national game, with Kerry Cauthen | Keeneland uniform rules, regulations, promotion and marketing-- My father, Tex Cauthen, was a farrier by trade, but was even coordinated and administered by a league office. Imagine the better at teaching big picture life lessons. He gave my brothers NBA or NFL operating with different rules in every state. If a and me a lot of some pretty sage advice that we all kiddingly call touchdown was worth 5 points in California, 6 points in Florida ATex-isms.@ Whenever things got rough or unpredictable like and 8 points in New York, football would be totally they are right now, he would say, AJust keep hammering nails.@ dysfunctional. That's exactly how Thoroughbred racing functions That phrase was shorthand for a whole lot, but basically it today. Rules of the game must be uniform nationwide: meant that if you don=t panic and you keep putting in your best medication, claiming rules, entry times, rider safety protocols, effort every day, things will actually turn out alright. I struggle whip rules, etc., can no longer vary from state to state or track and stumble with this advice quite a bit but I keep trying to to track. The logical solution is what currently exists for other remember it and to practice it, especially in this current major sports; a national racing office run by a board comprised situation. of industry stakeholders (owners, trainers, riders, veterinarians, From a business prospective, during the last recession I really racetrack owners, breeders sale companies and the Jockey just tried to keep a good, tight handle on the budget and always Club), headed by a commissioner of racing with the ability to do whatever was truly in the best interest of our clients. The promulgate and enforce rules of the game nationwide. COVID-19 pandemic is bound to continue to affect all of our businesses in many yet unseen and unanticipated ways, but I 2) Embrace national medication regulations. The vast majority believe that if we just keep hammering away each day, things of stakeholders strongly support the passage of legislation to will eventually get back in the black and we will all figure out provide uniform medication rules and prohibit the use of how to do quite a few things in a better way than we ever did performance-enhancing drugs. A program run by the U.S. before. I also believe that if we try to take the long view Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) can address issues of both legal whenever possible by helping as many of our clients, employees, and illegal drug use and put U.S. racing jurisdictions in step with friends, and even our competitors as we can, we will all end up international standards. Many of us have different opinions stronger and better off for it. about the use of race-day medications but it's time to get past the endless debates over Bute and Lasix. Whatever standards an independent regulatory agency comes up with, be it limited and strictly regulated rac- day Bute and/or Lasix or nothing at all, is something we must all be willing to live with for the greater HAVE A NEW FOAL? good of our sport.
