HIGHLIGHTS

• 241 communities were covered in Tartous governorate with one or more protection issues. • 81% of covered communities reported domestic violence as occurring, 76% reported harassment as occurring and 74% reported housing, land and property issues and family separation as occurring. • Domestic violence was described as a “very common” issue for one or more population groups by 7% of covered communities and as a “common” issue for one or more population groups by 17% of covered communities. 13% of covered communities described sexual harassment as a “common issue” for one or more population groups. • Women (65%) and adolescent girls (64%) were groups most affected by harassment, that was described a happening “sometimes” for these populations groups by respectively 65% and 64% of covered communities. • 64% of covered communities identified relying on humanitarian assistance as a coping mechanism that was “sometimes” used by one or more population groups, while accessing local community support were also described as used “sometimes” (63%) by one or more population groups. • 66% of covered communities described children dropping out of school to work as a coping mechanism “sometimes” used by one or more population groups and 55% mentioned early marriage as a coping mechanism “sometimes” used by one or more population groups. • Movement restrictions were reported as occurring in 35% of covered communities. Out of those, 73% covered communities identified checkpoints and 69% lack of identity documents among reasons, while men (71%), people without civil documentation (62%) and boys (60%) were mentioned as the most affected groups by movement restrictions. • Needs for protection services were identified for all population groups, in particular care mechanisms/services for elderly persons (83% covered communities reported it was needed but not present for one or more population groups), recreational activities (72% covered communities reported it was needed but not present for one or more population groups) and women and girls centers (69% covered communities reported it was needed but not present for one or more population groups). • 37% of covered communities reported concerns with humanitarian assistance. Out of the total covered, 72 indicated that the assistance delivered was not “what the community needed”, 65 communities mentioned the request for documentation to access assistance as a concern and 54 mentioned discrimination/exclusion. • Among covered communities having reported lack/loss of civil documentation as occurring, 60% indicated “loss” among causes while 73% identified “restricted freedom of movement” and 60% reported the inability to register birth/marriage/death among consequences. • Among documents that were described as difficult to obtain in in covered communities having reported lack/loss of civil documentation as occurring, passport (39%) and travel authorization document (35%) were mentioned. • 74% of covered communities reported housing, land and property issues as occurring. Out of those, 17% mentioned “disputed ownership” as a common HLP concern and 62% mentioned “rental disputes” as an HLP concern happening “sometimes”.
