Jean SIBELIUS (1865–1957) Belshazzar’s Feast • Overture in E Scène de Ballet • Wedding March Cortège • Menuetto • Processional Pia Pajala, Soprano Leif Segerstam Turku Philharmonic Leif Segerstam

Alongside the great symphonies and tone poems, music for the theatre Companion Titles played an important rolê in Sibelius’s development. From exquisite nocturnal tranquility to the macabre ‘Dance of Life’, Belshazzar’s Feast is an exotic tale of seduction and tragedy to which Sibelius responded with some of his most hauntingly beautiful writing for the stage. The early Menuetto and lively Cortège were considered good enough by the to be recycled for further stage productions, while the Overture in E and Scène de Ballet started life as Sibelius’s first attempt at composing a symphony.

Key Features • This is the second of a six-volume set of orchestral works by Jean Sibelius which explores his prolific but infrequently- 8.573299 8.555773 heard work beyond the core oeuvre of the symphonies, violin concerto and tone poems. Conductor Leif Segerstam has been acclaimed for his many recordings with numerous , and was awarded the annual Finnish State Prize for Music in 2004 and in 2005 the highly esteemed Sibelius Medal. His recordings for Naxos include a “skillfully and sweepingly paced” Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (Classic FM on 8.660152-54), his of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck regarded as “a giant-killer” (Gramophone on 8.660076-77). The Turku Philharmonic is a platinum record-making and award winning orchestra, and we are confident that the sheer quality of this new series will guarantee wide interest in the relatively neglected works of Finland’s greatest and 8.572227 8.552135-36 most influential composer.

Leif Segerstam is a conductor, composer, violinist and pianist with a prominent international career. Since 2012 he has been Chief Conductor of Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. From autumn 1997 to spring 2013 Leif Segerstam was Professor of Orchestra Conducting at the Sibelius Academy. He was awarded the 1999 Nordic Council Music Prize for his work “as a tireless champion of Scandinavian music” and the Swedish Cultural Foundation’s Prize for Music in 2003. Kevin Mallon

Franz Ignaz BECK (1734–1809) Companion Titles Symphonies, Op. 2 Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra Kevin Mallon

Franz Ignaz Beck is increasingly acknowledged as one of the most forward-looking and inventive of mid-eighteenth-century symphonists. A student of the celebrated , Beck was trained in , a focal point of new approaches to orchestral writing. Although small in scale, his Op. 2 set includes some of the most striking and harmonically daring works of their kind from the period. Further Beck Symphonies may be heard on Naxos 8.553790, 8.554071 8.570799 8.554071, 8.570799, 8.573248 and 8.573249.

Key Features • This is the third release in the Beck series. Beck’s symphonies are often considered to be pioneering symphonies, being some of the earliest and most interesting of the time – and they were written some years prior to Haydn’s earliest works in the genre. In fact, some of the first symphonies to be written were composed by Beck’s teacher, Stamitz. Another important feature to note is the importance of Mannheim, where Beck studied, as a vital cultural centre. To add further to the appeal of this album, conductor Kevin Mallon has made many recordings for Naxos, many of which have been well reviewed internationally, such as Handel’s Water Music on Naxos 8.573248 8.573249 8.557764, which earned a 10/10 rating from ClassicsToday.com and a Gramphone Editor’s Choice award.

The Irish conductor Kevin Mallon studied composition, conducting (with J. E. Gardiner) and singing, and specialized in baroque violin. He became concertmaster with Le Concert Spirituel and Les Arts Florissants in and led and directed The Irish Baroque Orchestra before moving to Canada to take up posts with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and the University of Toronto. In 1999 he founded the Aradia Ensemble, with whom he has toured widely and has made over 50 recordings for Naxos. In 2010 Mallon was appointed Music Director of Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra in Ottawa. Kevin Mallon fulfills a wide range of guest conducting engagements, is an Irish fiddler as well as a composer, most recently writing music for the © Paul Couvrette, Ottawa Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra TV series Camelot. 3 NEW ON NAXOS | JULY 2015

Choo Hoey

Companion Titles Mikhail IPPOLITOV-IVANOV (1859–1935) Symphony No. 1 Turkish Fragments • Turkish March Singapore Symphony Orchestra Choo Hoey

A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and Director of the Moscow Conservatory, Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov is most famous for his evocative Caucasian Sketches [8.553405]. He was always interested in the music of the ethnic minorities in the Soviet Union and in later life he pursued an interest in the music of the Turkish peoples, composing the Turkish Fragments, Op. 62 in 1930. This richly melodic suite is notable for 8.573161 8.573218 its characteristically oriental turns of phrase. Many years earlier, in 1908, he wrote his Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 46 which, with its solemn evocations of liturgical music, confirmed him in the lineage of eminent Russian symphonists.

Key Features • This is an ex-Marco Polo disc [8.220217], first released in 1989. The Symphony is an attractive work, somewhere between Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov in style. Surprisingly, it has not been recorded very much, there being only one other recording listed on ArkivMusic of the Symphony No.1 – on an all- Ippolitov-Ivanov disc, with Gary Brain conducting the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra on Conifer 51317, released in 2007. Prize- winning conductor Choo Hoey was appointed a Chevalier des Arts 8.573353 8.573122 et des Lettres by the Government of France in 1997, and has guest conducted with over 60 orchestras around the world.

Choo Hoey graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 1955 with the Manns Memorial and Ernest Read prizes for conducting and then went on to further studies at the Conservatoire Royale de Musiquein Brussels. In 1979 he was invited to become the founding Music Director and Resident Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. He built up the orchestra and developed an extensive repertoire ranging from the early baroque to contemporary masterpieces. For his contribution to music in Singapore, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion (1979), the Public Service Star (1982), and was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters of the National University of Singapore in 1989. José Antonio Escobar

Luys MILÁN (c. 1500–c. 1561) El Maestro, Libro 1 Works for Solo Vihuela José Antonio Escobar, Vihuela de mano

Although biographical details of his life remain sketchy, Luys Milán’s Companion Titles Libro de música de vihuela de mano intitulado El Maestro is certainly the oldest surviving printed collection of vihuela music. Tuned like the contemporary Renaissance lute, the Spanish vihuela is a guitar- shaped instrument and for it Milán wrote a series of compelling works including fantasias and pavans that maturely fused improvisatory and polyphonic elements. This recording presents all the solo vihuela pieces from the first book of El Maestro in the order in which they appear.

Key Features • Spain has had a long and proud tradition with the guitar and other stringed instruments. The collection of sixteenth- century music presented in this release – in the first of a series of 8.570284 8.572178 discs - is from the earliest known for vihuela, which is a guitar-like instrument. References can be made to contemporary Italian and Spanish music of the time – especially lute music, which resembles the vihuela in matters of tuning. The instrument used in this recording was made in Malaga in 2013, and the rarity of such vihuela music on disc is an important selling point.

José Antonio Escobar is one of the most distinguished and versatile classical guitar soloists of his generation. He is especially known for the perfect balance he achieves between intense musical expression and a vast knowledge of various musical styles and periods. Under the influence of his first master, the lutenist Ernesto Quezada, he became deeply interested in early instruments of the guitar family, 8.572863-64 8.573392-93 which led him to attend Early Music courses and master-classes with renowned specialists such as Hopkinson Smith, Eduardo Egüez, and Juan Carlos Rivera. He has been awarded some fifteen prizes in leading international guitar competitions, and has a number of successful recordings to his credit.

Ensemble Cirandinha3 Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra4 Companion Titles Fabio Mechetti4

†WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

The genesis of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Études goes back to his first meeting with the Andrés Segovia, at which the legendary guitarist asked for one étude and the composer ended up writing twelve. Andrea Bissoli returns to the original 1928 manuscript, restoring elements lost in later publication and reliving the magic of those times on an instrument almost identical to Segovia’s. The Tarantela was probably also written guitar in hand. For his ‘folk ensemble’ 8.573115 8.573116 instrumentation of the brightly coloured songs of the Guia prático, Bissoli has sought out traces of the guitar in the original and chosen a selection of pieces tailor-made for his instrument. The exciting story of O papagaio do moleque (The Little Boy’s Kite) concludes this third and final volume of the series.

Key Features • This is the third and final volume of Andrea Bissoli’s exploration and restoration of recently discovered or newly revived manuscripts by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The first two volumes of the series (8.573115 & 8.573116) have been widely praised, with International Record Review writing that “Bissoli’s editorial enterprise is beyond praise. As a player, he presents his findings with reverence, on a 8.573043 8.573151 cushion of delectable harmonies—technically most accomplished… both discs should be snapped up without hesitation.” MusicWeb International said of volume 2 that it “conjoins Villa-Lobos’s skills in virtuosic composition and musical arrangement. The two styles interweave seamlessly, forming a gossamer of Euro-Brazilian sounds”, and ClassicalCDReview.com admired Andrea Bissoli’s work, “whose devotion to the composer is obvious in these loving presentations… a brilliant performance of Choros No. 6, perfectly capturing the many moods of the work… It is a treasure indeed. Superb audio throughout—don’t miss this captivating CD.”

Baroque Moments Amadeus Guitar Duo

HANDEL • VIVALDI • FRANCK • J.S. BACH • HASSLER

J.S. Bach’s Italian Concerto and monumental Chaconne (heard here in the famous Busoni transcription) form the cornerstones of this disc of Baroque favourites performed on two guitars by the Amadeus Guitar Duo. One of Vivaldi’s most famous concertos, the D major RV 93 originally written for lute is transcribed to excellent effect for guitar duo. Franck’s Prélude, Fugue et Variation, a work inspired by the organ transcriptions of J.S. Bach, illustrates further how adept the Amadeus Guitar Duo is at reinventing these popular pieces for its own medium.

Key Features • This recording follows on from another recently re-released program by the Amadeus Guitar Duo, Through the Centuries (8.573439). This has already received acclaim from The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, which described it as “an album to be cherished and enjoyed repeatedly.” The duo can also be heard in concertos by Rodrigo on the ‘Spanish Night’ album (8.573441). Beautifully recorded and performed with stunning virtuosity and impeccable musical sensitivity, ‘Baroque Moments’ is only one of a substantial catalogue from the Amadeus Guitar Duo due to be re-released by Naxos, forming yet another highly desirable edition for the broadest spectrum of collectors.

Grażyna BACEWICZ (1909–1969) Complete String Quartets, Vol. 1 String Quartets Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 7 Lutosławski Quartet

Musicologist Adrian Thomas considered Grażyna Bacewicz’s string quartets “unrivalled in 20th-century Polish music and… one of the century’s most significant contributions to the genre”. Her folk-music infused First Quartet dates from student days at the Paris Conservatoire, while exceptional polyphonic skill, intense emotion and playful, high spirits characterize the Third Quartet. Both the Sixth and Seventh Quartets unite tradition with a strikingly effective and highly personal exploration of progressive contemporary techniques. As Lutosławski observed, in the “rapidly changing artistic currents” of the times, “it was [Bacewicz’s] music which helped create that atmosphere”.

Key Features • This is the first of two volumes which will be the only currently available complete recorded edition of Grażyna Bacewicz’s seven String Quartets, the second volume of which is planned for release in September 2015. The Lutosławski Quartet was founded in 2007 and has been widely acclaimed for their recordings and worldwide Festival appearances popularizing Polish music, including works by Lutosławski, Bacewicz and Szymanowski. Naxos has already had much success with a release of Bacewicz’s Symphony for Strings (8.573229), considered “fine performances by the Capella 8.572806 Playing Time: © Marek Szczepański Bydgostiensis” by Norman Lebrecht on the Sinfini Music 71:04 website, and the Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review considering it “prime Bacewicz, done with the spirit the music demands.” 7 47313 28067 4 Companion Titles

World Première Recordings (1756–1791) Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 21 Orchestra parts transcribed for and double bass by Ignaz Lachner (1807–1895) Alon Goldstein, Piano Fine Arts Quartet Rachel Calin, Double Bass

To make Mozart’s Piano Concertos K. 466 and K. 467 more accessible to the public, the 19th-century composer Ignaz Lachner left the piano parts untouched and made splendid transcriptions of the orchestra parts for just string quartet with added bass. These chamber versions of two of Mozart’s greatest and most popular concertos sound almost as natural as if Mozart had transcribed them himself.

Key Features • World première recordings of music by Mozart have to count as rarities today, but these arrangements of two of © Robert Devers

© Christian Steinern his great piano concertos accompanied by string quartet with bass from 19th century composer Ignaz Lachner are genuine discoveries. They are considered by Fine Arts Quartet Alon Goldstein Ralph Evans of the Fine Arts Quartet, as “splendid… with the interpretive freedom and intimacy that only a chamber version can offer.” Pianist Alon Goldstein has recently appeared in the first 8.573398 Playing Time: volume of our new series of Dvořák’s Piano Trios (8.573279), admired by Fanfare 57:56 for “what may well be the best Dvořák “Dumky” on disc ever.” The Fine Arts Quartet, “one of the gold-plated names in chamber music” (Washington Post), 7 47313 33987 7 has made numerous highly successful recordings for Naxos, including an award- winning disc of Fauré Piano Quintets with Cristina Ortiz (8.570938) which was described as “outstanding” by Gramophone and named one of ArkivMusic’s Best Classical Recordings of 2009. †WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

Long admired as a pioneer of the blending of ethnic music with avant-garde techniques, Leonardo Balada first encountered experimental electronic music in New York in the early 1960s. It was to have a significant bearing on his compositional development. In Cumbres (Heights), a ‘Short Symphony for Band’, he employs an ‘electronic’ effect with dramatic results. He pursues the idea of cluster-like textures in the Concerto for Piano, Winds and Percussion while also paying homage to Chopin, Poulenc and Stravinsky. Conflict and lyricism mark out the Viola Concerto, while the Sonata for Ten Winds was described by The New York Times as ‘an exciting instrumental showcase with motoric passages that are quite stunning’.

Key Features • Balada has been 8.573064 Playing Time: represented on Naxos before and his 79:38 discs have been well received critically. Guernica is probably his best-known 7 47313 30647 3 work. The focus here is more on the effect electronic music had on his development as a composer, though Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble none of the pieces actually includes electronica. Another interesting feature of the music in this disc is Balada’s take on the symphony and sonata forms. He calls Cumbres a symphony though it’s certainly not a conventional one, and his Sonata for Ten Winds appears to have more to do with ‘sound’ than structure, as he himself admits.

Giuseppe MARTUCCI (1856–1909) Piano Trios Nos. 1 and 2 Trio Vega

The foremost Italian orchestral composer of the late-nineteenth century, as well as an accomplished pianist and conductor, Giuseppe Martucci was one of a trio of pioneering Italian known collectively as Il ponte (The Bridge) who were determined to break away from opera’s dominance in Italian musical life. Together with Giovanni Sgambati and Antonio Bazzini he established a connection between Italian instrumental music and Austro-German Romanticism. Perhaps nowhere is this better exemplified than in the twoPiano Trios which show the important influence of Brahms as well as Martucci’s gift for long-breathed melodies combined with pulsing lines and contrapuntal interplay. Martucci’s complete orchestral works can be heard on Naxos 8.570929-32.

© Mark Paquin Key Features • The last quarter of the nineteenth-century saw the rebirth of Italian chamber and orchestral music, helped in no small part by Martucci, who was an important Italian composer of chamber music in the last quarter of the nineteenth-century, which was very unusual in a culture dominated by opera. These Piano Trios have seldom been recorded, performed by the fine youngTrio Vega – the pianist Domenico Codispoti was praised by the great György Sándor as ‘one of the finest young concert pianists I know’. The works in this world première recording span almost forty years of Casablancas’s output, from an early tribute to Mompou in Dos Apunts, to his recent musical expression of Japanese verse in the two sets of Tres Haikus.

Key Features • We have a fine track record with the music of Spanish composer Benet Casablancas, for instance in his piano music (8.570757) of which the American Record Guide “admired and enjoyed their vitality, fluency, and zestful exploitation of the piano’s rich palette of colors.” His orchestral works including The Dark Backward of Time (8.579002), on which the Gapplegate Music Review commented that its “whirlwind of orchestral excitement, building layers of sound © Xele density that nevertheless [has] appealing transparency and dramatic impact.” Acclaimed for its “beauty in sound, individual virtuosity, clear 8.573375 Playing Time: and balanced blend, and flexible sense of rhythm”, theB3:Brouwer Trio is one of 62:09 today’s leading contemporary chamber groups, and especially valued in the work of Spanish and Latin-American composers. 7 47313 33757 6 Companion Titles

Louis Moreau Gottschalk was the first important American composer to fuse European classical piano music with American cultural influences, including folk music, the music of slaves, and Latin American dances. Although still revered for his anticipation of elements of Ragtime and Harlem Stride Piano, he owed his greatest musical debt to Chopin. On this recording we hear memorable and catchy tunes as well as considerable harmonic ingenuity. It includes some of his finest pieces, such as the deliciously Gallic Pasquinade, the wonderfully expressive Le Banjo and Steven Mayer’s solo piano arrangement of La Nuit des Tropiques.

Key Features • Gottschalk was the great pioneer in introducing classical piano music to America, with a fascinating life story, including a scandal which saw him depart the US for South America where he was to die. The dual influences on him of Chopin (strong in this disc) and Liszt made him a strong advocate of ‘cross-cultural’ music, including folk elements. Gottschalk’s influence on later American vernacular music is lasting and he is often cited as a precursor of later Jazz-based piano styles. World Première Recordings Philip SAINTON (1897–1967) Moby Dick Moscow Symphony Orchestra William Stromberg

John Huston’s 1956 film of the epic novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville is a genuine grand movie adventure. Sharing Huston’s passion for the sea, Sainton produced one of the most vibrant “sea scores” ever written, from the shimmering, rhapsodic depictions of the becalmed ocean to the thrilling and earth-shaking motif of the whale. Including music which was omitted from the soundtrack, this recording was widely acclaimed on its original release. Gramophone considered the score to be “music of richly stocked imagination and uncommonly fertile resource”, and there was also praise from ClassicsToday.com: “Sainton’s music belongs squarely in the tradition of contemporaries such as Finzi, Howells, and Grace Williams, and anyone who enjoys these composers will find his music equally appealing …”

Stromberg and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra perform the music with total conviction, and deserve a 8.573367 Playing Time: great deal of credit not just for restoring a major film score to currency, but for 63:13 recreating the major achievement of a minor but very engaging member of what has become known as the English musical renaissance.” 7 47313 33677 7 Companion Titles

Research by The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain has uncovered many rare pieces by central European light music composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Julius Fučik’s humorous march Um Mitternacht includes an imitation of nocturnal cats by the trombones, and Paul Lincke’s Overture to his operetta Berliner Luft includes the famous march that is a traditional part of the Berlin New Year Concert. Volume 1 of this series can be found on Marco Polo 8.225365. Three more pieces from this series by Lincke, Labitzky and Heuberger can be heard as a Naxos download on 9.70228.

Key Features • This is the second volume (volume 1 is on 8.225365) of our Strauss Contemporaries series, in which the results of research by The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain and reconstructions by conductor John Georgiadis provide a vivid overview of popular musical life in Central Europe beyond the massively famous works of Johann Strauss. This is a further feast of première recordings of previously unknown music by composers such as Carl Zeller and Franz von Suppè; names still familiar from operettas which are still popular favorites on the stage and in concert halls all over the world. These compilations by The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain are part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations. With one of the Czech Republic’s top orchestras 8.225366 Playing Time: conducted by Viennese music specialist John Georgiadis, this rich selection of 75:51 new musical bonbons will prove irresistible to the genre’s many fans.

Described as “a fresh voice in cross-cultural music” by the MacArthur Foundation, whose Fellowship he was awarded, Bright Sheng has become one of today’s most widely performed composers. Filtered through Sheng’s rhythmically energetic yet haunting idiom, various types of Himalayan Sherpa dances are captured in Dance Capriccio, while characteristic singing voices and Chinese opera rhythms are represented in A Night at the Chinese Opera. My Song was inspired both by the musicality and virtuosity of pianist Peter Serkin (the work’s dedicatee and the soloist Bright Sheng on this recording) and by the composer’s love of Chinese folk music.

Childe Harold's Pilgrimage is a fascinating portrait of 19th-century Europe, disillusioned and ravaged by the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. DESCRIPTION

Rob Roy is a captivating novel of chivalry and romance set in the Scottish highlands of the 18th century.

After rejecting the life his father has laid out for him, Frank Osbaldistone is sent to the North of England to live with his Uncle, where he is to repent his sins. However, when his father’s

wealth and reputation are threatened, he is drawn to the Scottish Highlands where he must retrieve a set of stolen documents. It is here that he is pulled into a number of skirmishes relating to the Jacobite uprising of 1715, and where his path frequently crosses with the mysterious maverick outlaw known as Rob Roy… Scott’s portrayal of Scotland is remarkable in its vivid and evocative panorama of the highlands, and his insightful exploration of social, 13-digit ISBN: 978-1-84379-900-9 economic and historic themes. Germinal By Émile Zola Unabridged Read by Leighton Pugh

Germinal is one of the most striking novels in the French tradition. Widely regarded as Zola's masterpiece, the novel describes the working conditions of French coalminers in the 1860s in harsh and realistic terms – it is visceral, graphic and unrelenting. Its strong socialist principles and vivid accounts of the miners' strikes meant that the novel became a key symbol in the workers’ fight against oppression, with chants of 'Germinal! Germinal!' resonating high above the author's funeral.
