Pittsburgh Action Against Rape Annual Report • 2018-2019

Dear Friends, Board of Action Against Rape’s mission is to respond, educate and advocate to end sexual Directors violence in Allegheny County. PAAR is as relevant and necessary today as it was 47 years ago. This 2018-2019 fiscal year, more than 30,000 people were impacted by PAAR’s counseling services, advocacy, education programs and trainings. PRESIDENT Britney Brinkman, PhD PAAR expanded our services to reach more survivors by opening our first satellite office in the Mon Valley. The Mon Valley office, located in VICE PRESIDENT Braddock, provides a place for survivors to seek services closer to home. In addition to opening our Mon Valley office PAAR was awarded a state grant to Yodit Betru, PhD deliver a comprehensive approach to reducing sexual violence by working with Woodland Hills School District youth and the parents and community members SECRETARY of the district. Susan Corbesero, PhD Last year PAAR reached over 25,000 individuals through prevention education. We continue to maintain important partnerships with our local college and TREASURER universities through education programs, working with Greek life on campuses and training professionals within the system. Doug McGill

PAAR continues to find new ways to reach survivors in our community. This past year we introduced two new ways for survivors to access support through our chat and text helpline. Now in addition to our 24/7 helpline survivors can MEMBERS AT LARGE access help via text or chat online.

PAAR challenged Pittsburgh this past April, Sexual Assault Awareness Doug Anderson III Month, to #TurnPittsburghTeal. The challenge was overwhelmingly accepted! Individuals and community members hosted over 25 fundraising Kathryn Harrison, Esq. and awareness building events and raised over $40,000. Everyone from college students to CEO’s participated in events. Our sponsors, donors and Phil Hilf supporters play a crucial role in raising community awareness and allow us to reach more people with support and prevention education. By sponsoring Sue Jamison PAAR’s events, local businesses are publicly taking a stance to prevent sexual violence and support survivors. Kerrie Kauer Brian Kohlhepp Your help makes an impact on the lives of survivors, their families, and the community every single day. With your generosity Pittsburgh Action Against Jill Lamb Rape will continue to be a voice for survivors and for prevention. Lynette Lederman On behalf of the 3,200 survivors PAAR served this year, thank you. Susan Leff Sincerely, Maureen McHugh

Jose Monroy Alison C. Hall Ryan Sims Executive Director Sharon Soodik Services in the Mon Valley

As any first day of business goes, one wonders- will people come? In PAAR’s case, will survivors seek our services? The answer came quickly in the form of a full schedule on day one. One of the clients that came for therapy that day was accompanied by her boyfriend for support. As the boyfriend waited, he approached our receptionist and asked if PAAR served men. Our receptionist explained that we help everyone, and he responded, “I think I may need to talk with someone.” Within the next few minutes one of PAAR’s advocates was able to provide immediate support to him and got him scheduled to start seeing a therapist.

This is just one example of people getting help that they may have never had access to.

Historically, PAAR served over 550 clients from the Mon Valley communities and knew it was imperative to start meeting people where they are and accommodating the needs of these community members.

PAAR’s Mon Valley location aims to reduce barriers for victims of sexual violence and their families in the eastern region of Allegheny County. Clients can receive specialized trauma therapy, crisis services, and the full complement of victim services in their own backyard.

We have been welcomed into the Braddock community by individuals who seek our services, children who wait for the bus outside of the office, neighboring business owners, parents, schools, social service organizations and local law enforcement.

In addition to the opening of the office, PAAR applied and was awarded state grant funding for a violence prevention initiative with Woodland Hills School District communities. The goal of this project is to prevent sexual violence and provide trauma-informed and prevention focused care for youth and adults in the WHSD community. Prevention work will be done on multiple levels including evidence-based, and research-based programming to youth in the school district through after-school programs, working with parents, male and female athletes, trainings of professionals within the school district and systems in the surrounding municipalities.

As we look back to our first year in the Mon Valley, the evidence is clear, we are providing services to individuals who may not have accessed help due to distance and transportation barriers. We will build upon the success of this year and aim to continue to reduce the barriers in communities throughout the Mon Valley. Healthy relationships make healthy communities

Because of the skill of her therapist she is doing wonderful and is returning to the happy six year old she was before her assault. When tragedies occur outcomes resolve. Our outcome would not have been as positive if PAAR was not part of our recovery. -Mother of child survivor

PAAR South Side Location Support Groups Provide PAAR’s Support Groups provide psychoeducation around the impact of sexual trauma, and survivors are provided with the support and encouragement from each other. Our goal is to help survivors: • Learn healthy coping skills and self-care practices • Explore feelings and developing healthy strategies to understand difficult emotions • Enhance self-esteem and assertiveness skills • Gain the necessary skills to build healthy boundaries and identify support networks
