I'm a Rex Stout fan. I've been reading Nero Wolfe since I was Death of Doxy is one of my favorites. Rex Stout was a genius at defining characters through their interactions with others. He never left his main characters with simple shallow stereotypes. Nero Wolfe is a misogynist, but in this book, he shows respect for a showgirl of all women. His treatment of her is entirely within his character. A lesser author would have made his hatred of women be a badge, not a a part of the whole. Not a thing that had reason and cracks. Its a great novel. But I love it because of the relationship Death of a Doxy develops between Wolfe and the showgirl. Death of a Doxy is as delightful a read as any of Sout's other Nero Wolf mysteries. Wolf reads books in all of the stories. Those authors re-examined all the evidence presented at the Rosenberg trial and concluded that the Rosenbergs were innocent of the crime. At the Death of a Doxy time, Wolf has been re-examining the murder of Richard II's two nephews. For centuries Richard II was held responsible for their deaths, but historians in the 20th century began questioning that. Josephine Tey in [Daughter of Time] presented a Death of a Doxy version of the new position. And he also consults the [Encyclopedia Britannica]. Naturally, this story deals with someone falsely accused; Wolf's occasional helper Orrie Death of a Doxy. Doxy: A woman who cohabits with an important man. Syn: concubine, courtesan, paramourIsabel Kerr lived a luxurious life paid for by someone with a lot of money. Someone didn't like the idea and put an end to it. What brought Nero Wolfe and Archie into the case was the arrest of Orrie Cather, one of their assistants. Orrie had made the mistake of being a frequent Death of a Doxy to Isabel's. An interesting cast of characters who all tie back to Isabel on some level, yet know hardly anything about each other: a sister and brother-in-law, the rich man footing the bills, Isabel's best friend - a showgirl who isn't afraid to say what Death of a Doxy thinks and isn't afraid of Nero Wolfe, a police captain looking to solve the case but can't come up with any definite evidence, and blackmail all combine to provide a tight and tangled tale of murder. A "kept' Death of a Doxy is murdered and one of Wolfe's hirelings is accused. Nice plot, and one used in the Timothy Hutton video versions. Here at Walmart. I've complained in the past that Hutton's Archie is often too broad and actorish a problem Hutton often hasand that Chaykin's Wolfe is more peevish than princely yes, Nero Wolfe can be peevish and petty - but he is also deeply principled and courageous in his own fashion, and courtly in many ways. If only the rest of the two-parter were up to their level, rather than rejoicing in a budget so low that Ed Wood would turn his nose up at it: An abandoned warehouse is obviously used for a number of sets, including the prison where Orrie is kept, the 10 Little Indians Nightclub, and even Avery Ballou's mansion! There is so little attempt at redressing this particular location that Archie is led by the Ballou's butler through an obvious Death of a Doxy bay to see Mrs. Ballou at one point. Though the book includes several scenes set in Wolfe's plant rooms, all we see is one scene in a tiny bedroom-style set with a table and stool where Wolfe is potting a plant as Archie talks to him. No attempt was made to recreate the splendor of Wolfe's orchid collection, or even to try faking it by shooting in a botanical garden. The same actress, Kari Matchett, plays both Archie's girlfriend Lily Rowan in a Sixties- style red wig and nightclub singer Julie Jaquette with her own blonde hairthus stretching the show's "rep company" conceit to absurd lengths. Not that Ms. Sometimes, you see a group of good doing something Death of a Doxy love, and you think you would love the show if they did it reading scripts while sitting around a table. And you probably would - but you wouldn't enjoy watching them do it while struggling, and failing, to recreate Kennedy- Era New York City on a nonexistent budget in . Looking for something to watch?
