in America

On August 4, 1769, led the Methodist Conference at Leeds. It was here that he made the first appointment of preachers to America. Joseph Pilmore and Richard Boardman were two of the first volunteers to serve in America. In October, the two arrived in . When they arrived, Methodist laity had already formed Methodist societies. Captain Thomas Webb, known for wearing an eye patch, helped to organize Methodists in Philadelphia. About one hundred faithful Methodists were part of Webb’s Methodist Society. Joseph Pilmore remained in Philadelphia ministering to Webb’s Methodist Society as Richard Boardman went to New . The two men exchanged appointments from time to time until May of 1772. This pattern of exchanging appointments became known as “itinerating” and has continued to this day to be a practice of United Methodists. On Pilmore’s arrival, the Methodist Society in Philadelphia did not meet in a formal building. He helped secure a building for Methodists to worship, purchasing it at auction. It originally was a German Reformed Church called St. George’s, but was never completed until after the Revolutionary War. It became St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church, and today is known as St. George’s . St. George’s UMC is the oldest Methodist church in continuous use in the United States beginning in 1769. In 1772, Pilmore left Philadelphia/New York for Georgia. He travelled through , Annapolis, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Williamsburg, and Yorktown before arriving in North Carolina. In early December, Pilmore preached the first official Methodist sermon ever delivered in North Carolina at the Currituck Court House. From there, he traveled through Edenton before arriving in New Bern. On December 24, 1772, Joseph Pilmore arrived in New Bern, NC. He preached on Christmas Day. He preached to a host of Methodist gathering on Christmas Day marking the founding of Centenary UMC. These Methodists that gathered were probably some who had heard preach a Methodist message on December 24, 1739. From 1772 on, circuit riders visited New Bern often. and Richard Whatcoat preached in New Bern with Bishop Asbury preaching fourteen times. In 1784, John Wesley dispatched Thomas Coke and Richard Wright to America to formerly establish Methodism in America. Thomas Coke met Francis Asbury at Barratt’s Chapel in on Sunday, November 14, 1784 to discuss summoning a Methodist Conference in America. They agreed to gather on December 24, 1784 in Baltimore, MD at Lovely Lane Chapel.

On Friday, December 24, 1784, eighty-six preachers gathered together at Lovely Lane Chapel for the forming of a new denomination in America. They met for ten days. In those ten days, they established a Discipline, compiled a Book of Worship, ordained preachers, and consecrated Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury as the first two Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Methodism in America was officially recognized as a new denomination on that day.

The following year, from April 20-24, 1785, twenty preachers from 31 circuits in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina met with Bishops Coke and Asbury for the first North Carolina Annual Conference. It was held in Louisburg at Major Green Hill’s home. Bishop Asbury would later write that the conference convened in “great peace” and Bishop Coke added, “We had a comfortable time together.” As of 2016, the United Methodist Church has missions in 136 different countries with 12 larger conferences (5 Jurisdictions and 7 Central Conferences), 133 , 870 districts, and 44,122 local congregations around the world. We are one of those churches. This August, take time to explore Methodist history. News from Anchored Student Ministry

It is hard to believe how fast the summer has flown by! Although we have taken a break from our regular Sunday afternoon meetings, the youth have enjoyed a few outings together this summer, including a pool party at John and Linda Griffin’s home and a trip to the Outer Banks to the H2OBX Water Park. We had 8 youth and 4 adults in attendance on our trip and we all had a blast at the water park! As I write this article, we are looking forward to serving our congregation with a FREE carwash on Saturday, July 27th! Our youth will also be helping with Vacation Bible School August 4th-8th. We plan to head to Atlantic Beach on August 18th, as Bee Mayo hosts our youth at her beach condo pool! This outing will kick off “back to school” and regular fall meetings and events. We are looking forward to what God has planned for us in the months ahead! We’ve got a super bunch of kids in our youth group who have definitely bonded and have a great time together! Thank you for all your prayers and support for Anchored Student Ministry.

In Christ, Duffy Huffman

“Back to School!”

It seems incredible but the new school year is almost upon us. Where the summer has gone, I don’t know. I hope that your summer was a pleasant one (though hot!) and that you all have enjoyed your vacations and day trips. In a couple of weeks, our students will be returning to school (some already have) and picking up their books and papers.

As we have for the past couple of years, we will be volunteering over at Trent Park Elementary school in many capacities. In fact, we have been asked to step into the breach again to help teachers and students. The school has suffered cuts in Teacher’s Assistants and their budget and is in great need of help. It may seem trite to say but we really do serve a critical role at the school. If all the teachers had to do was teach, their jobs would be much easier but they are asked to do much more. In too many instances, they must be mothers, nurse maids, baby sitters, and-of course-teachers. The tasks that they undertake out of necessity are where we can help in a significant way. The children crave attention and eagerly give hugs to anyone who tries to relate to them. The experiences can be very rewarding.

Last year, several volunteers taught science to Kindergarten through Third Grade and helped with Fourth and Fifth Grade science. We will get that same opportunity again this year while also being asked to help with reading, especially Kindergarten through Second Grade. The overall goal is to have every Third Grade student reading at grade level by the end of that year. This is also a goal of the United Methodist Church, North Carolina Conference through its C4C (Congregations for Children) program.

We are playing a very important role at Trent Park Elementary school but the need for us to continue, nay, expand our involvement is imperative. The ways in which we can help do not require much other than our time. Our time can be precious to us but even more so to the young students and their teachers. An hour here or there or the reading of a few pages in a book would mean so much. One area where help is urgently needed is the morning carpool where parents drop off their children. Every morning, four to five volunteers are needed to help the children leave the vehicles, ensure they have their backpacks and lunch boxes, and walk safely into the building. This takes place from 7:40 to 8:00 AM. That’s all. Some of us can help with carpool and still get to our jobs on time. Others might be able to stay for an hour or so and read to students. Every minute is a valuable gift.

I sincerely hope you are moved to help us this year. You will be greatly rewarded.

God’s Blessings and His Peace be with you. Jerry Egolf, Trent Park Elementary School Coordinator
