1. SUMMARY

Traffic in May was at 38.6% of May 2019 levels, there was a large traffic increase over the two first week of the month. May traffic is aligned with the traffic scenario of 39% published by EUROCONTROL in June 2021.

On average, the network saw 12,299 flights/day. The peak day was 28 May (16,459 flights) with traffic at -50.2% of 2019 levels. Fridays were the busiest days throughout May with an average of 14,396 flights.

Turkish Airlines was again the busiest carrier in May with on average 641 flights/day, followed by (411 flight/day), (409 flights/day) and (407 flights/day).

Ryanair total flights increased by 42.3% compared to April 2021 and went from a total of 8,912 flights to 12,681 flights in May.

The busiest airport was Frankfurt/Main (548 flights/day), followed by Amsterdam/Schiphol (535 flights/day), IGA Istanbul (528 flights/day) and Paris/Charles de Gaulle (492 flights/day).

There was an excellent of cooperation between all operational partners. There were some network flow protective measures in May that generated 21,602 minutes of ATFM delayi. The measures were mainly applied at airport due to low visibility and the Football Champion League final;

Network punctuality remained at around 85% and, with fewer airspace constraints, the network excess fuel burn indicator remained low compared to 2019.

2. TRAFFIC EVOLUTION

EUROCONTROL has issued a new set of Traffic Scenarios detailing the monthly evolution for the period up to December 2021. Air traffic throughout Europe was 61% down in May 2021 compared to May 2019. While the crisis continues, the trend is moving upwards and there is hope of some recovery this summer.

All-cargo remained the only segment above 2019 flight levels and increased by 7.3% in May 2021 compared to May 2019. Business aviation and Charter decreased by -9.3% and -28.1% respectively. After a minor blip over Easter in April, low-cost remained the most affected segment declining by 81.4% compared to May 2019. The traditional segment was stable, staying at -66.3%.

There were 381,284 flights in May 2021 – 61.4% reduction compared to May 2019.

3. PUNCTUALITY

Departure and arrival punctuality during May remained stable around 85 and 87%.

*This view of operational punctuality can be tracked by aircraft operator and airport level in the NORTI Dashboard. The Central Office for Delay Analysis CODA reports provide further detailed analysis of airline reported delay reasons.

4. OPERATIONS

The EUROCONTROL Network Manager continued monitoring the operational situation and held weekly Ad-hoc Coordination meetings to share network status.

There were some protective measures in May and 21,602 minutes of ATFM delay.

En-route delays accounted for 38.8% of these ATFM delays and airports 61.2%.

The measures were mainly applied at Porto airport due to low visibility and the Football Champion League final.

EUROCONTROL NM provided a consolidated view of relevant NOTAMs on the NOP Portal and issued weekly versions of the Rolling Seasonal Plan. This focusses on the next six weeks plan and on managing the execution and implementation of the five year NOP.

5. FUEL BURN

The Network Fuel Efficiency study1 introduced the Excess Fuel Burn indicator. During the COVID period, with fewer flights and airspace restrictions, the network is relatively more fuel efficient than the 2019 period when the indicator was over 9%. The indicator has fluctuated during 2021 due to the changing mix of routes flown at low traffic levels. NM will monitor excess fuel burn as traffic returns.
