Yes that’s right, this year marks the fifth anniversary of the signature event which heralds the fall to spring concert season here at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. It also just happens to be the fifth anniversary of our beloved Shalin Liu Performance Center, now a widely acclaimed concert hall in the music world and a favorite of musical artists everywhere. Who can forget five years ago when Dave Brubeck appeared in Jazz on the Rocks–Take 1, with the paint barely dry on the walls. We have come a long way from that first season, presenting hundreds of concerts, establishing the Rockport Jazz Festival, enriching our education and community programs, and crafting a new strategic plan to chart our future.

More than anything, our mission here at Rockport Music is to excite your passion for music. That passion energizes us to bring music of all genres to tens of thousands of people each year, allowing us to inform, entertain and enrich lives. From Latin to Classical, there is something for everyone of all ages here.

Your passion is also evident in the generosity of your financial support. Jazz on the Rocks helps us to continue presenting great music here in the Shalin Liu Performance Center and serving our local schools and community with free concerts and educational programs for all.

Think of Rockport Music as a series of building blocks—great performances, a beautiful, well-maintained concert hall, a dedicated group of volunteers, a professional staff, educational and community activities—all of these elements contribute to the Rockport Music experience.

Now that is something to celebrate. Why not start with Eddie Palmieri and the fabulous evening ahead?

6 Ansel Adams Photograph Value: $11,250 .

Own this signed print by one of the most celebrated photographers of all time Ansel Adams (1902–1984); entitled “Rear of Church, Cordova, New Mexico”. This black-and-white photograph depicts two blank walls of an adobe building, with a half-height buttress that slopes directly to the ground, and thus is triangular in section. There are two more adobe buildings, each with one door and one window, in the middle distance at left. Adams’ images of the American landscape, and especially those of the American West, are familiar to millions. Born and raised in San Francisco, Adams studied music as a youth with the hope of becoming a concert pianist. At age 14, while on a family vacation, he took his first snapshots of Yosemite National Park. From that time on, Adams was captivated by the idea of recording nature on film. While in his twenties, he abandoned his musical ambitions for a career in photography, working as a portrait and commercial photographer. By the 1930s he began to achieve success for his visionary, yet highly detailed photographs of western landscapes, especially those taken in Yosemite National Park. In 1941 Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes asked Adams to take photographs of the American West for a series of murals to be installed in the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. The murals were never completed, but 226 of Adams’ signed original prints were later added to the National Archives holdings and can be found among the records of the National Park Service.

ITEM A“Rear of Church, Cordova, New Mexico” by Ansel Adams, negative shot in 1938, printed in December 1978

Silver gelatin photographic print, 15 5/8” high x 19 1/2” wide This photograph is dry mounted on a rag mat board measuring 22” x 28”. The board is signed “Ansel Adams” in pencil. The Auctioneer will now ask for contributions to the Rockport Music Artistic Excellence Fund. This fund helps to underwrite the costs of bringing to our stage superb performers for jazz, chamber music, and world music concerts in the coming season, as well as free community concerts.

Without the Artistic Fund, it would have been difficult to create those once-in-a-lifetime moments that only the Shalin Liu Performance Center can provide—from Jeremy Denk rendering a riveting and masterful performance of Ives’ Concord Sonata and Bach’s Goldberg Variations in his Rockport Music debut, to Kenny Barron and his trio giving us their lyrical interpretations of some of jazz’s greatest hits, to the return of the internationally acclaimed Shanghai Quartet in one of its most polished and passionate performances ever, to the musicians of Classical Jam braving a February snowstorm to perform for and with local high school students in a free community concert—every one of us has a particular Shalin Liu Performance Center moment that stays with us.

Rockport Music will use the money raised to bring more high quality musicians to , to reach more children in our schools and more adults in our communities-- enhancing the cultural life for so many on the North Shore. Guests who want to support Rockport Music but who have been unable to assist us through the live auction have the opportunity to give at their level of choosing.
