Introduction

Mallee communitiesin Australia occur aqoss the soutlem part of the continent fiom Westem Australia (longitude lUE) to New SouthWales (longitude 146'E) betweenlatitudes 22'S and 37"S (Parsons1981).

In contrastto the malleeregions of easternAustralia which havebeen widely surveyedsince the late 1940's (Parsons1981), the maueeregions of Westem Australia have receivedlittle botanical attention. Beard (1973) producedbroad scale(1:250 000) vegetationmaps and descriptionsof the mallee region as part of the vegetationsurvey of WestemAustralia, while Monk et al. (1979) atr.td Crook andB urbidge( 1982)produced descriptions of malleevegetation on a much smallerscale. The vegetationof the Roe Botanical District which lies in the malleeregion wtts surveyedby Burgman (1985). Newbey (1979) surveyeda large part ofthe coastalvegetation which includes somemallee vegetation.

The discovery of coal in the malle€ region north of Esperance(Elms €, dr. 1982),led to a pre- mining suvey of the vegetationand soils in oneparticular coal mining lease(van der Moezel 1985). This paper concemsthe vascularplant collections madeduring that suvey over ihe period 1982- 1985.

Environment

The study areais situatednorth ofEsperance,Westem Australia (Figure 1). The areais roughly rectangularin shape,45 km long by 10 km wide elongatedin a north-southdirection centredaround latitude33'22'S andlongitude 121"50'E. The western boundary is about l0 km eastof theEsperance CoolgardieHighway andis parallel to it (Figure 1). The total areais 442.6km2 ofwhich 312.8km? or 7 I . 17o has been cleared for agricultural use. KingiaVol. 1,No.3 (1990)

Climat€ The climate of the study areacan be broadly classifiedas Mediterranean(KOppen 1923), being influenced by an anticyclonic weathersystem which brings rain-bearingcold ftonts in winter and causeshot, dry conditions during summer. The only two Bureauof Meteorology weatherstations locatednear the study areaare those at Scaddanand Grass Parch, both about 10 km westof the area. Average annual rainfall at Scaddanis 414 mm (Table l) occurring mostly during May to August (48.17o)w hile the average annual rainfall at Grass Patch is 348 mm (May-Augu st= 46-0Vo). Physiographic features

Much of the areacontains sets of longitudinal duneswhich areusually associated with interdunal salt lakes. The vegelateddunes are most.lyaligned on a west-eastdirection but some dunes are alignedalong a west-north-vr'est/east-south-eastdircction.

An extraordinarily large numberof saltlakes and salt pans extend throughout the studyarea. The lakesvary from small circular lakesof lessthan one hectare in areato long thin lakesassociated with the swalesof the longitudinal dunesand also to large irregular shapedlakes. The lakes are usually dry during summerbut contain a thin covering of water during winter. On the easternside of most lakes are small crescentshapd dunescalled lunettes.

Soils

The soils of the study areaare describd asbeing chiefly alkaline with a bleachedA2 horizon and pedal subsoils(Dy 5.43) (Northcoteet al. 1967). Other associatedsoils are grey-brownhighly calcareouseafihs, leached sands, lunette soils andcracking grey clays. Thereare no rocky outcrops in the study area.

Yeg€tation

The study area is located in the South-WestBotanical Province of Westem Australia (Beard 1980). Within this Province,the arealies in the south-eastemsection ofthe Roe Botanical District which is predominantlymallee vegetation. The southempart ofthe studyarca has vegelation which is characteristicofboth theRoe BotanicalDistrict andthe E).re Botanical District which is locatedto the immediatesouth.

The types of vegetationformations presentare extremely vaded, ranging from Woodland to Mallee, Shrublandand SaltComplex formations (van der Moezel 1985).The mainoverstorey species in Woodlandand Woodland/'lr,Iallee communities arc Ercallptus ererrcphila, E.lepacalyx, E. goni- antha,E. utcinata nd E- conglobata.Mallee formations are &xnhateAby E. tagona andE. angulosa which emergeover a densesclerophyllous shrub stratum. Shrublandformations co']tainMelaleuca speciesparticularly M. halmatworum ssp.cymbifolia andM. nesophilo. Salt Complex vegetation consistsofhalophyticspecies such as llc losarciasyncarpa, Stipa erentophila Nd Atriplexvesbaria. KingiaVol. 1,No.3 (1990)

R€sults

Floristics

The total flora recordedfor the studyarea consisted of 344 taxafrom 158genera and 57 families (Appendix 1). ThLty (8.770)taxa were not identified to specieslevel. Of these30 taxa,4 are new undescribedspecies, 14 have afhnities with known specieswhile the remaining 12 were either unidentifiable or had no known close afhnities. The ger.er4Acacia and Melaleuca had the most number of unidentified taxa with 8 and 5 respectively. Only 9 species(2.67o) were recordedas infoduced (speciesalong roadsidesand in clearedland were not sampled). Low colonisation by introducedspecies into Westem Australian malleecommunities has also beenrecorded by Newbey ( 1979)and B urgman( 1985) with valuesof 1.4Vo atd2.6Vo respectively.

The five main families representedwere Myrtaceae (71 taxa), Leguminosae(46 taxa),hoteaceae (33 taxa),Asteraceae (27 taxa) andEpacridaceae (19 taxa). The largestgenera vrerc Mellleuca (27 taxa),Acacid Q5 Ia;a) arrdEucalyptus QX taxa)Clable 2). The threefamilies Myrtaceae,I-eguminosae andProteaceae and the threegenera Ac acia, ELcalyptusand Melaleuca Cccv in the top threeor four placesof all specieslists takenfrom malleeregions of WesternAustralia (Newbey 1979,l,:onk et al. 1979,Burgman1985, rhis survey - Appendix1).

Conservationstatus The specieslist contains33 taxa(9.8Vo) which havebeen listed by eitherLeigh et al. (1981), Marchantand Keighery (1979), Rye and Hopper (1981), Patrick and Hopper (1982), Rye (1982)or Burgman(1985) as rare, restricted orpoorly known (Table 3). Thisfigure is litely tobe highersince undescribed or recently described species urre not included. A new species of the genus Conostep hium @pacridaceae)was described as a result of collectionsmade during this research(van derMoezel 1987).

Physiognomy

Eachof the 344 taxawas classified according to the life form categoriesof Newbey( 1979) (Table 4). Thesystem used by Newbeysubdivides the primary life formsofRaunkiaer (1937) to allowfor the vegetationclassificationofMuir (1977) and the life formsoftheSouth-WestBotanicalProvince.The dominantlifeforms were dwarf shrubs (30.57o), small shrubs (19.270), annuals (10.2%) and medium shrubs(9.07o). Thesesame four life forms in very similar proporlions dominatedthe specieslist of Newbey(1979). Burgman (1985) however recorded almost 45 70 dwarfshrubs from theRoe Botanical District. This high dwarf shrubvalue was the result of samplingmany heath communities. Heath vegetationwas not prominent in this study area, In comparisonto someNew SouthWales mallee communities (Wood 1929; Whittaker et al. 1979) the percentageof nanophanerophytesin the Westem Australian mallee is much highe|while the percentage of hemicrlptophytes and theroDhvtesis lower.
