Readers of his fiction inevitably note strong similarities between the figures and landscapes it evokes and the people and places the writer knew in real life. He was acutely aware of how important it was to write from personal knowledge, from everyday experience, in order to capture the beauty that can be found in the ordinary experiences of people going about their daily lives in small rural communities, mostly located in the Leitrim/Roscommon area where McGahern spent the majority of his life. His characters and settings are at times painfully real, whether it be the stoical Elizabeth Reegan in The Barracks (1963), who, on the threshold of a painful death from cancer, really “sees” the beauty of nature for the first time; or the uncertain groping towards adulthood of young Mahoney in The Dark (1965); the tyrannical actions of the patriarch Moran in Amongst Women (1990); or the unrelenting womanizing John Quinn in That They May Face the Rising Sun (2002).

Many thanks for your very clear map which was most useful on the day. However you have not yet formulated a three to five year work programme, as mentioned in last year’ s report. It is essential at this stage in the competition that you formulate a strategy for developing the town further. As mentioned by last year’s adjudicator it would be useful in terms of garnering financial support from state bodies and will also give yourselves a clear series of objectives to target. It will also make the work of the adjudicators more straight forward as they see how you are progressing as the years go by. The document need only be a couple of pages long outlining your plans and ideas and setting a time scale against their implementation. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT The Vocational School looked extremely well and its associated planting was admired.

  • St Caillín and the Book of Fenagh, 1516-2016
St Caillín and the Book of Fenagh, 1516-2016 Royal Irish Academy 14 September, 2016 The civil parish of Fenagh is divided between three baronies, Carrigallen, Mohill and, chiefly, the barony of Leitrim. No other place in Leitrim is mentioned as often as Fenagh in the Irish annals. Compare Fenagh with Mohill. The Onomasticon Goedelicum, the Academy’s Dictionary of Irish Placenames, has more references to Fenagh than to any other place in the county. Fenagh is also given much space by Samuel Lewis in his Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, published in 1831. Following Mervyn Archdall (above), Lewis claimed that Fenagh became ‘celebrated as a school of divinity, resorted to by students from all parts of Europe’; an ‘extravagant claim’, according to Bishop James MacNamee, historian of the diocese of Ardagh, for which he could find ‘no support’ The fact that it produced an early manuscript book that still survives, which is said to have been copied from an older book that no longer survives, would be enough to set Fenagh apart from all other Leitrim parishes The Book of Fenagh, kept here in the Royal Irish Academy since its purchase not in 1901 for £1, from a certain Mrs Eagar, as is claimed by the Academy’s Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts (right). In 1888 for £10 from the diocese of Ardagh, following negotiations mediated by the ‘Reverend Denis Murphy’ — a noted scholar and Jesuit from Cork — as is explained by Bernadette Cunningham in Making the Book of Fenagh. A lecture to the Academy by Murphy in 1886 on ‘An ancient manuscript Life of St Caillín’ — now republished in Making the Book of Fenagh — states that the Book had then been loaned to him by the Bishop of Ardagh, and had subsequently been purchased by the Academy.

  • Soils, Grazing Capacity and Forestry)
Soil Survey Bulletin No. 29 ISBN 0 901317 67 5 COUNTY LEITRIM RESOURCE SURVEY Part 1—Land Use Potential (Soils, Grazing Capacity and Forestry) Published by an Foras Taiuntais, 19 Sandvniount Avenue, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. Price: /2.00 November, 1973. FOREWORD For many years it has been recognised that some of the worst features of western decline are represented in County Lei trim. Controversy has surrounded the county' with regard to the possible means by which this continuing decline could be halted and reversed. Farming in the county is beset by many problems arising from natural, technical, economic and social forces. The natural limitations of the county are those imposed mainly by a combi nation of heavy, poorly drained soils and a relatively wet climate. This dictates a predominantly grassland farming system which encounters serious problems such as poaching by grazing animals, short grazing season, the necessity for the conser vation of large amounts of winter fodder, and poor trafficability for farm machinery. This latter problem is accentuated by the presence of many steep slopes associated with the predominant drumlin topography. It is not surprising, therefore, to find serious sociological problems associated with these conditions. Farm size is small, off-farm employment is scarce, and the resulting outmigration has brought about a population structure dominated by the old and very young. This represents a very serious obstacle to economic develop ment. Against this background the Council of An Foras Taliintais decided in 1971 that the overall agricultural situation in Leitrim should be examined. It was realised that much of the information already available was related to situations of the past and was irrelevant in terms of future demands created by E.E.C.
