NASSAU SUFFOLK SERVICES FOR AUTISM | SUMMER 2016 | WWW.NSSAINFO.ORG 9 NSSA Honored at Holes for Hope | An Outing for Autism

n August 1, 2016, NSSA was selected to be the beneficiary of the 7th Annual Holes for Hope: An Outing for Autism. Upon learning how Holes for Hope began and what this special fundraising event means to those involved, we felt Odoubly honored to be a part of it. The event began with a group of North Shore area families who witnessed the desperate need for autism awareness and funding first-hand through their close friends whose young son has autism. They came together and created an event that would benefit the autism community and organizations dedicated to the disorder. NSSA was awarded $15,000 from this year’s Holes for Hope outing.

NSSA is so grateful to have been chosen as the Quilt Honoree at this year’s fundraiser. The beautiful quilt that is displayed at every Holes for Hope event is made of tee shirts from past Autism Speaks walks. Supporters of the cause purchase a space on the quilt to have his or her name embroidered, and the proceeds of this are awarded to an organization. NSSA is humbled to receive this incredibly special recognition. We are thankful for the phenomenal work that Holes for Hope has done to enhance and enrich the lives of those with autism. Thank you for helping NSSA and Long Island’s autism community! n

Camp Week | 2016

very summer, NSSA takes a break from business as usual and opens its doors Eto a group of children and young adults on Long Island for a week of fun at our annual Summer Day Camp. Since 2007, NSSA has provided campers this opportunity to enjoy sports and leisure, socialize with peers and have a great time in a comfortable and safe environment.

From June 27th to July 1st, 36 campers and a fantastic staff of counselors enjoyed five days of swimming, bowling, the beloved bouncy house, outdoor activities and exciting field trips! Everyone had a blast at KZAM in Farmingdale and some action packed fun at Plainview’s indoor inflatable arena, Pump It Up! And of course, a visit from Mr. Softee was a delightful treat during an exceptionally warm summer week. Special thanks to Stacey Agosta for making sure camp week went off without a hitch, and thanks to our great staff who kept our campers happy and safe all week long! n

NASSAU SUFFOLK SERVICES FOR AUTISM | SUMMER 2016 | WWW.NSSAINFO.ORG 11 Blue Horizons | Soars

n September 17, 2016, NSSA staff once again provided behavioral support to Othe Blue Horizons for Autism Program, a partnership between JetBlue Airways and Autism Speaks. The program gives families affected by autism an opportunity to experience mock air travel at New York’s JFK Airport and to acclimate them to the flying experience by waiting in line, actually boarding a plane, taxiing around the runway, etc. NSSA staff helps reduce anxiety and stress for the participants. This has led to more families being able to travel by air in the future. NSSA thanks JetBlue and Autism Speaks for providing this wonderful service. n

A Special Night | For our Special Kids

s part of our outreach to the greater autism community, NSSA hosts A Special Night for Our Special Kids twice yearly at Adventureland in Farmingdale. NSSA tries to hold the spring and autumn events during program breaks to give our Aguests with autism and their families something to look forward to when there are few structured activities available. In spite of challenging weather, we welcomed over 700 guests into the park this past September 16 for an evening of fun.

Many families with a child with autism find it extremely daunting to attend an amusement park on a typical day. Long lines and crowds can be especially challenging for these families. During NSSA’s events, Adventureland is closed to the general public and made available to people with autism and their friends and families. On these special evenings, the amusement park is at reduced capacity. The shorter waiting times for rides make it much easier for our friends with autism and more manageable for their families. Since the park is filled with people who understand autism, the atmosphere is very relaxed and caring. We hear over and over again that it is only during the NSSA events that many of these families would even consider going to an amusement park as a family.

Our next Special Night for Our Special Kids at Adventureland will take place Friday, April 7, 2017, 6:30-9:30pm. (Rain Date: Thursday, April 13, 7:30-10:30). We hope to see you there! n
