  • A Foreign Affair (1948)
Chapter 3 IN THE RUINS OF BERLIN: A FOREIGN AFFAIR (1948) “We wondered where we should go now that the war was over. None of us—I mean the émigrés—really knew where we stood. Should we go home? Where was home?” —Billy Wilder1 Sightseeing in Berlin Early into A Foreign Affair, the delegates of the US Congress in Berlin on a fact-fi nding mission are treated to a tour of the city by Colonel Plummer (Millard Mitchell). In an open sedan, the Colonel takes them by landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Pariser Platz, Unter den Lin- den, and the Tiergarten. While documentary footage of heavily damaged buildings rolls by in rear-projection, the Colonel explains to the visitors— and the viewers—what they are seeing, combining brief factual accounts with his own ironic commentary about the ruins. Thus, a pile of rubble is identifi ed as the Adlon Hotel, “just after the 8th Air Force checked in for the weekend, “ while the Reich’s Chancellery is labeled Hitler’s “duplex.” “As it turned out,” Plummer explains, “one part got to be a great big pad- ded cell, and the other a mortuary. Underneath it is a concrete basement. That’s where he married Eva Braun and that’s where they killed them- selves. A lot of people say it was the perfect honeymoon. And there’s the balcony where he promised that his Reich would last a thousand years— that’s the one that broke the bookies’ hearts.” On a narrative level, the sequence is marked by factual snippets infused with the snide remarks of victorious Army personnel, making the fi lm waver between an educational program, an overwrought history lesson, and a comedy of very dark humor.

  • The Vanishing Screenplay: Jean-Claude Carrière at BFI Southbank in July 2012
12/37 The Vanishing Screenplay: Jean-Claude Carrière at BFI Southbank in July 2012 The contribution of the writer is often overlooked in cinema, yet it’s inseparable from the creative process of filmmaking. This season lauds an ‘invisible giant’ of European cinema, screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. He is also a novelist and essayist, cartoonist and sometime director and actor, and has recently collaborated with director Michael Haneke on the script for The White Ribbon (2009) and appeared in Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy (2010). He is probably best known for his working relationship with Luis Buñuel, who both co-scripted most of the titles of the great Spanish director’s French period. Carrière’s films for Buñuel include the erotic psycho-fairytale Belle de Jour (1967), the surreal The Phantom of Liberty (1974) and the deliciously satirical The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), released in cinemas nationwide on 29 June for its fortieth anniversary by Studiocanal and the ICO. It will also be screened as an extended run as part of the season. BFI Southbank is delighted to announce that Carrière will give an on-stage introduction to a preview screening of The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie on Thursday 28 June. International collaborations for Carrière followed in the late-70s and 80s. These include acclaimed literary adaptations of sprawling and seemingly un- adaptable works for directors like Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum, 1979), and Philip Kaufman (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1988) and also his dream- like rendering of Proust in Swann in Love (1984). This last film was co-written with Sir Peter Brook, whose earlier work with Carrière included The Mahabarata and presaged an extended departure from screen to stage writing.

JUKEBOX JAZZ by Ian Muldoon* ____________________________________________________ n 1955 Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock was the first rock and roll record to become number one on the hit parade. It had made a stunning introduction in I the opening moments to a film called Blackboard Jungle. But at that time my favourite record was one by Lionel Hampton. I was not alone. Me and my three jazz loving friends couldn’t be bothered spending hard-earned cash on rock and roll records. Our quartet consisted of clarinet, drums, bass and vocal. Robert (nickname Orgy) was learning clarinet; Malcolm (Slim) was going to learn drums (which in due course he did under the guidance of Gordon LeCornu, a percussionist and drummer in the days when Sydney still had a thriving show scene); Dave (Bebop) loved the bass; and I was the vocalist a la Joe (Bebop) Lane. We were four of 120 RAAF apprentices undergoing three years boarding school training at Wagga Wagga RAAF Base from 1955-1957. Of course, we never performed together but we dreamt of doing so and luckily, dreaming was not contrary to RAAF regulations. At around ten years of age he was given a windup record player and a modest supply of steel needles, on which he played his record collection, consisting of two 78s, one featuring Dizzy Gillespie and the other Fats Waller.

  • Conto Alla Rovescia Di Un FESTIVAL
