From its earliest years as a convict penal establishment to is current UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Ship building commenced on Cockatoo Island in 1870 and continued until 1993. Stewardship of the Island was passed to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust in 2001 and is now a harbour tourist attraction. Meet at Circular Quay at 10.15am to take the 10.37am Sydney Ferries service to Cockatoo Island. Use your Opal Card for transport to and from the Island. Bring a picnic lunch or purchase your requirements at the cafe on the Island. You can leave at your leisure following our guided tour or stay on should you wish to do further exploring. A VISIT TO THE WESTERN PLAINS ZOO at DUBBO Departing from Paterson and Broadmeadow via Maitland Singleton Muswellbrook Scone Murrurundi Quirindi and Werris Creek. Returning via Merrygoen Dubbo Wellington Orange Bathurst Lithgow and Central to Broadmeadow and Paterson. Weekend Tour 5 to 9 June 2020 Come and join the ARHS NSW Division and The Rail Motor Society for a new adventure to a former railway destination and a visit to the Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo for our annual Queens Birthday Weekend Tour. Friday 5th June. Travel from Sydney on the 6.15am Intercity Train service to Broadmeadow to join our heritage 621/721 Rail Cars. Departing Broadmeadow at 9.00am we will serve a welcome Devonshire Morning Tea as we pass through Maitland and Singleton, passing the great moonscape of open cut coal mines to Muswellbrook, stopping there for a leg stretch. Continue north through Scone and Murrurundi climbing the 1 in 40 grades and through the Ardglen Tunnel, descending to Willow Tree and on to Quirindi before stopping for lunch on the station at Werris Creek. Take the opportunity to visit the Station Museum and Railway Memorial before rejoining our train and proceeding to Gap junction to travel on the cross country line to Binnaway. On arrival, transfer to our coach to follow the 51 km closed section of the Gwabegar Line to Coonabarabran where we will check in to the Matthew Flinders Motor Inn for a 3 night stay. Drinks in the bar before Dinner in the Dining Room. Saturday 6th June. After a hearty country breakfast we will be joining our coach to travel to the Siding Spring Observatory. Meet our Tour Guide and visit the Exploratory Centre, also visiting Trig Point and Australia’s largest optical telescope. Morning Tea in the Exploratory Cafe. Depart for the Warrumbungle National Park Visitors Centre to meet the local Rangers. Continue to the Canyon Picnic Area for a packed lunch. On our return journey visit the Whitegum Lookout and view the spectacular Warrumbungle Mountains and the iconic Breadknife. Pay a visit to the amazing Crystal Kingdom. Return to town for a Chinese Banquet Dinner before relocating to the Warrumbungle Observatory to view the Night Sky with a noted astronomer. (Weather permitting). Return to the Motel. Sunday 7th June. Join our coach again after breakfast spending a day on a journey following the 95 km closed railway line to Gwabegar. We will check out the station locations along the line at Yearinan, Bugaldie, Wittenbra, Baradine, then Kenebri and Merebene. Gwabegar,

As part of providing a public transport service that meets community needs a Foley Government will do all it can to make travelling on public transport safer. That’s why Labor will: • Re-introduce Guardian train services on Friday and Saturday nights; and • Run all-night train services from Kings Cross to Town Hall and Central Stations. Feeling safe and having confidence in the security on our trains is a major factor for people choosing whether or not to use the rail network, especially for women, parents with children, and older and other vulnerable people. The NRMA’s Seeing Red on Rail reported personal security as the second most pressing issue for over 11,000 thousand commuters. 38% of commuters in this survey said that they do not feel safe at certain times of the day. The Sydney Trains network includes 12 lines, 176 stations and many interchanges. NSW TrainLink network includes 5 intercity lines and over 130 stations. It is a large area to cover. Knowing that there is assistance if other passengers are being anti-social, violent or abusive – especially at night, can increase the numbers of people using public transport as well as improve security. Under the Baird Liberal Government, security on the rail network has been cut. When the Liberals and Nationals came to government in 2011 there were 600 dedicated transit officers for trains and 300 commuter police attached to local area commands.

    Mudgee Visitor Profile and Satisfaction Report The following information is based on a sample of 154 people who visited Mudgee during June 2006. The researchers noted that wet weather in the region during the survey period may have affected visitors’ experience of the destination. The top two reasons for visiting Mudgee were: • ‘To experience the region’s wineries’ (53%). • ‘To experience the food or local produce’ (36%). What do the visitors to the destination expect? • ‘Relaxation and rejuvenation’ (87%). • ‘An opportunity to tour around and explore’ (84%). • ‘A place to spend quality time with partner/family/friends’ (84%). • ‘An opportunity to experience wineries’ (83%). • ‘An opportunity to experience regional food/local produce’ (82%). What are visitors experiencing in the destination? • ‘Just walk or drive around/taking in the sights/general sightseeing’ (73%). • ‘Visit winery/cellar door’ (72%). • ‘Eat out at a hotel/restaurant/clubs’ (71%). • ‘Go shopping (pleasure)’ (55%). Were they satisfied with their experience? • The majority of visitors to Mudgee (79%) were ‘satisfied’ with their visit. The experiences anticipated either ‘met’ or ‘exceeded’ their expectations particularly for those who expected Mudgee to: • Offer an opportunity to experience wineries – 60% of visitors stated the wineries were better than expected. • Be a place to spend quality time with partner/family/friends (56%). • Offer an opportunity to experience regional food/local produce (56%). • Offer luxury and indulgence (55%). • Offer relaxation and rejuvenation (50%). • The key strength of Mudgee was the ‘wining and dining’ experience (local wine/wineries, local produce/ regional food, and food and beverage services). More than three quarters of all visitors rated this experience as ‘important’ in terms of their expectations of the destination.

    FROM A TIN SHED IN GULGONG TO THE OLYMPIC STADIUM IN TOKYO – MICHELLE BROMLEY’S INSPIRING STORY OF RESILIENCE IN HER QUEST TO BECOME AN OLYMPIAN. Gulgong is a beautiful 19th-century gold rush town in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, located about 300 km northwest of Sydney with a population of 2,521. This former gold mining town still feels like it might have in the 1870s when people came here seeking quick fortunes. It has been famous for the great Australian writer and bush poet Henry Lawson, who spent his childhood in this gold town, which appeared on the first Australian $10 note. Now, it is famous again for Australian Table Tennis Hero and Tokyo Olympian - Michelle Bromley. On 28 July 2020, to mark one year to go, the Australian Olympic Committee confirmed the selection of four table tennis players for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Michelle Bromley, who grew up in Gulgong, secured her place on the Australian Table Tennis Team, after her performance at the team selection trials in January 2020, where she won the event. "It is fantastic to welcome these four athletes to the Australian Olympic team," said Ian Chesterman, Australia's Tokyo 2020 Chef de Mission. "Congratulations not just to the athletes, but their coaches, supporters, families, friends, sporting institutes and table tennis community who helped them achieve this fantastic milestone and continue to support each other on their Olympic journey. "I also want to thank Table Tennis Australia for its work to grow table tennis and develop athletes from the grassroots level to the elite athletes named to the Olympic team.” Michelle is excited to be representing Australia against the world’s best in the table tennis competition in Tokyo.

    North-South Corridor Improvements – $100M Special Investment Program June 2005 Proposed Projects: North-South / East-West Integration (Tottenham Rail Bypass) $15M North-South Railway Track Upgrading $44M Improved Railway Clearances: Melb –Sydney - Brisbane $40M Liverpool Range Grade Easing (Ardglen Tunnel) Alignment Study $1M Defined Interstate Rail Network –Investment Options 2 June 2005 North-South / East-West Integration (Tottenham Rail Bypass) Objective To provide a direct railway connection between the north-south and east-west railway corridors at Tottenham, Melbourne. Issue Standard gauge railway freight services to and from Melbourne have historically all operated into and out of the Dynon rail terminal precinct. Given this pattern of operations, there has traditionally been little requirement for a direct connection for through trains between the east-west and north-south corridors. To the extent that services have needed to operate between the two corridors, they have used the Dynon / Tottenham area to reverse. Three factors are now emerging as drivers of a need to develop a direct connection between the east-west and north-south corridors by way of the construction of a direct Brooklyn –Sunshine connection: Intermodal terminals are increasingly being located to the west or north of Tottenham. While Dynon will continue to play an important role as an intermodal facility, its inherent constraints to growth (being located in central Melbourne), the drift of freight generating activities away from the central city area mean that pressures will mount for terminals to be outside this precinct. Already SCT and CRT have located terminals to the east at Altona, while a terminal has been built by Austrack to the north at Somerton.
