In the quarter-finals of the winner’s bracket, Baugh Ford faced Precision/3rd Street/ Bull Dawg. Precision was leading 13-12 going into the bottom of the 5th inning, when Baugh Ford erupted for 16 runs and left Precision standing on the field with a run-rule loss (28-13). The semi-finals of the winner’s bracket started around 8 p.m. Saturday night in chilly temperatures. Baugh Ford was up 7-4 on Empire after one inning and went up 16-12 after four complete innings. But the scrappy Empire team 12th Annual Space City Classic- Third Place Pure Sports/ Monsta - Charleston, S.C. was unfazed and had the lead going into the bottom of the 7th, although they failed to add to it in the top of the inning. The loser’s bracket played 1-pitch 30-minute time limit games to catch up from the 60-plus games that were lost when overnight storms on Friday night caused the closure of the auxil- iary park for Saturday. The top of the loser’s bracket was littered with most of the top Major and AA teams in the tournament. Vivid won three in a row before getting beat by Pure Sports and Pure knocked off L&S Glass (B), Tournament MVP, Baugh Ford’s left-fielder, Brian Mays Vivid (A), Nightmare (AA), Precision (AA) after they beat Dan Smith by one run, and Riot Sports (AA) to make it to Sunday. Meanwhile in the lower part of the loser’s bracket, Stars knocked off Maniacs, Team Fan Apparel (A), Infamous (B), La Famiglia (B), and Empire (B) to make it to Sunday. Those last games finished up at 3 a.m. Sunday morning with the Stars and Pure Sports having to be back at the fields at 8 a.m. to play each other. On Sunday morning with the wind blowing in on Yankee Field, Stars grabbed a 5-4 lead on a Brian Therkildsen homer. Then Pure got a defensive stab of a liner by Justin Mucciarelli and grabbed a 9-5 lead on a two-out homer by Ryan McClanahan. The Pure Sports infield then started to take over, as they held Stars to zero Tournament’s Outstanding Defensive Player, All Out’s pitcher, Jeff Graus runs on a play. Stars drew close on a big three-run homer by Pat Farrell in a five-run Stars bottom of the fifth. But Pure Sports put the game away (25-18) on another McClanahan homer in the seventh. Pure advanced to play a fresh All Out team in the loser’s bracket finals. All Out’s Chris Potts’ three-run homer cut Pure Sports lead to 6-4 in the first inning. Then it was all Pure Sports as they went up 20-6 after four innings. But All Out was not done, as pitcher Jeff Graus sparked a big fifth inning with a three-run homer and Chris Potts hit another three-runner and then they scored a couple more runs after a dropped popup to pull within six runs. Most of the teams that did well in Houston struggled out of the gate at the Hall of Fame Classic. In the bottom half of the round of 32, Dan Smith (CA-M) had to use some great defense to hold off Wiley’s (FL-B) with the wind gusting out on one of the baseball fields. Dan Smith finally won the game 39-36. Pauer Sports (OH-A) the old JBL Tailgaters group beat fellow ‘A’ team Classic Glass (CA-A) 21-12. Riot Sports (FL-AA) shut out and one hit Chanticlear Pizza (MN-A) 23-0, and Nightmare (MO-AA) took it to Stars (CO-A) 33-11. Former Resmondo pitcher Dan Sanchez pitched for Riot in that near no hitter. Meanwhile over on the stadium, Resmondo (FL-M) shut out La Famiglia (PA-B) who had won their play in game. And Smash It Sports Major team (NY-M) beat their fellow Smash It Sports (NY-B) B team 48-2. Most of the games in this tournament that were not played at night or with the wind blowing out in some fashion were games where neither team hit their home run limits, which was usually 12 unless two major teams played and then it was 16. The weather was actually very good and stayed between 65 and 82 degrees most of the week. In the “round of 16 and 8” in the winner’s bracket most of the favorites began to emerge. Fulk disagreed. “It kind of pissed me off that they said I could only play baseball,” said Fulk. “I got mad and said if that’s the way it was going to be, I wasn’t going to play anything at all.
