Prayer Requests

Please pray for the repose of the souls of Edward Doyle, Michael O’Loughlin, Silvia Pisani, Margaret Williams, and all who have died recently. Also for those whose anniversaries occur at this time.

Please continue to pray for those suffering with Coronavirus, those who have died from the virus and most importantly plead for the end of the pandemic. A Plenary Indulgence is available to all who pray for these intentions under the usual conditions of making Sacramental Confession, Holy Communion (both as soon as possible after the lockdown) and prayers for the intentions of Pope Francis (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be). Acts to be performed for the indulgence include read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or recite the Rosary or the Way of the Cross. As is evident to all, the recitation of prayers and the reading of the Bible can be done without leaving home, and therefore in full compliance with the rules to counter the spread of the virus.

Please also remember in your prayers:

Doreen Price, Olive Adams, Monica Lloyd, Stanley Whitfield, Baby Ronnie Gwyer, Rita Stokes, Biddy Williams, Mary Finnerty, Debbie Burnett (Reynish), Mary Richards, Reg Gough, Terrence Rose, Peter Okwusogu, Sr. Denise, Jeanette Bassett, John Ryan, Pat Bowen, Daniel Gabriel, Monica Pugsley, Catherine Wenegrieme, Annie Cutinha, Jean Main, Margaret Millwater, Noel Tolan, Zoe Coleman and all the sick at home or in our hospitals, and all who care for them. To add a request please contact one of the priests.

When will our churches be open? - update . Archbishop George met with the Welsh ‘Faiths Forum’ on Wednesday, where the question of the opening of our churches was discussed. As you may have heard, after much hard work and dialogue from the bishops of England and Wales, churches in England have been given the go-ahead to open for private prayer from next Monday. Here in Wales, we have not been given any dates as yet for when this will be possible for us, but there was an indication that the First Minister will address the phased re-opening of churches in his next statement in just under two weeks time. This would mean a controlled entry of individuals for private prayer, subject to the Health and Safety regulations being in place. Public worship will begin later, and the issues with public Masses are discussed in the statement from Archbishop George in last week’s newsletter.

We must stress that, when we are given the all-clear from the Welsh government, it will only be possible to open provided the necessary precautions are in place. For our parish, this will only initially be possible at St. Mary’s. A few of these Health and Safety requirements are:  The availability of suitable PPE in a large enough quantity.  Stewards being present throughout the time that the church is open, themselves practising good hygiene. (For our purposes, a minimum of three will be required at any one time: one at the entrance, one at the exit and one in the main body of the church.)  Care in entering and leaving the church. This should be done through separate doors if possible.  The practise of social-distancing, i.e. people from different households keeping at least two metres apart, both walking around and sitting or kneeling in benches.  A full clean of the church at least once a day, and more frequently for particular areas and surfaces. We will ensure the sanitisation of a surface or object each time someone comes into contact with it.  No physical veneration of objects such as statues.  A special system being in place for the lighting of votive candles. For us, this will involve a steward inside the church lighting candles when asked, however we have been told that it is possible that we will have to remove all votive candle stands from the church. Please remember that these are minimum requirements and we will not be given permission to re-open if they are not in place. We have already procured a quantity of PPE and other equipment for these precautions. We have calculated a capacity of 20 people seated and 6 standing at any one time.

Volunteers needed

We must also stress that this will only be possible with willing volunteers. The following are essential:

 Stewards  Cleaners (cleaning is required both during the time the church is open and when the church closes each day)

Volunteers must not be currently classified as vulnerable to the virus by the NHS i.e.:

 under 70 years of age  have no underlying medical conditions.

Patience and understanding

I’m sure you can appreciate the seriousness of this matter. We must see it in a positive light, however. All of these precautions, although they may seem heavy-handed at first, are a step towards things going back to the ‘new normal’ for which we are all longing. We are all looking forward to and praying for the time when we can all gather together again and worship Almighty God as a parish. In the meantime, we must be patient, taking on our responsibilities of charity as well as towards civil society, as our Faith teaches us.

We do not yet know how long the church will be open for each day. This is partly dependent on the availability of volunteers.

If you would like to help volunteer to help keep the church open in the day, please contact one of the priests with your contact details and what days/times you would ordinarily be available each week.

Provision for the Sacrament of Reconciliation

Last week we began offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the grounds of St. David’s Catholic Church, Park Crescent, Newport. This will continue on Saturdays from 1-2pm. For the safety of everyone involved, and to ensure social distancing, Confession will be offered in two ways:

Drive thru Confessions

For individuals who are on their own and can drive, you will be able to drive onto the grounds of the church and follow the one-way system to a designated point for Confession. Simply pull up at the point, wind down the window and make your Confession without leaving the car. Once done, follow the one-way system out of the church grounds. The map below gives an idea of the traffic flow, extra care will need to be taken at the gates as there will be a contraflow!

Family/Household Walk up Confessions

For family/household groups, a priest will be available just inside the grounds, next to the school building. Any queue that forms will be asked to form around the school building towards the main entrance to ensure privacy is maintained. Social distancing must be maintained at all times; you may queue as your household, but two meters must be maintained with members of other households. If you are part of a family/household group we ask that you park responsibly near to the school and not drive on to the grounds for safety and to ensure traffic flow for drive thru confessions.

Confession by appointment @ St. Mary’s - Confessions can also be made, by appointment, in the parking area at the back of the presbytery at St. Mary’s. Please contact one of the priests directly to make suitable arrangements.
