Mittler Senior Tech: 2021 SUMMER PROGRAMMING FAS President Jacob D. Gold’s visit with Jack Belz in Memphis, TN

3

A LETTER FROM FAS LEADERSHIP

Dearest Friends,

We hope that all of you are well and enjoying summer!

As temperatures rise, it is hard to believe that the High Holidays are around the corner. Yet, a look at the calendar reveals that the holidays are barely ten weeks away! We are hard at work preparing for the holidays, and ask that you please let us know by July 15 whether or not you intend to be at Fifth Avenue for services.

Synagogue life at FAS continues to evolve with the changing circumstances of the pandemic. Please know that your health and safety will always be our first priority. Although we are currently davening in the Ballroom due to renovations, those who at- tend on Shabbat or for daily minyanim would likely agree that our services are filled with warmth and spirituality, infused with an even more profound appreciation for the opportunity to pray together and to mingle at an outdoor . Communal davening is so fundamental to Jewish existence, but we have also realized that virtual programming provides us with incredi- ble opportunities to reach our members and Jews across the country, even around the world - truly a silver lining of the pan- demic. Our zoom program with Bill Ackman, the CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management, for example, was ultimately viewed by more than 35,000 people!

The last year has emphasized, more than ever, the need for community on both the personal and global levels. Inside this bulletin, you will find photos from the special evening marking the Shloshim of our beloved Ritual Director Rabbi Yisroel Halpert, ob”m. We also came together as a community to grieve for and support those who were affected in Meron, Israel and Surfside, Florida. We continue to pray that suffering for these families and all families will come to an end. We also want to make sure that we can celebrate your semachot, so please keep us posted on births, special birthdays or anniversaries, and graduations, so that we can include them in our bulletins.

As we reflect on the last year and think about the year ahead, our goal is to continue to grow our community and spread Torah. We are excited about some new learning opportunities for the coming year - Rebbetzin Lisa Babich will be teaching a class for parents about the celebration of Shabbat, and a new women’s class, titled “Women of the Torah,” will be taking place on Wednesday afternoons. We are looking forward to bringing young people into the shul for Hebrew and Bar Mitzvah lessons. (Please contact us if your children or grandchildren would like to participate!) And, we look forward to more incredible Sunday zoom programs in the coming months.

Our community is incredibly special. You undertook countless acts of chesed this year to support those in need, and we are deeply grateful. We are thrilled to welcome some wonderful new members into the shul this year, and ask that you let us know if you have friends or family who might like to join the shul. We would love to reach out to them!

We pray that you and your families have a summer filled with good health and relaxation. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon.

Warmest regards,

Rabbi Eli Babich Chairman Walter Molofsky, MD President Jacob D. Gold Vice-President Shaun Honig Chief Operations Officer Rachel Akrongold

"Antisemitism isn't taking a summer vacation. So, neither can we." This is the message of an important rally that is being planned by the Alliance for Israel, the American Jewish Committee, and a broad swath of voices from across the Jew- ish community to decry antisemitism of any kind. A key organizer and speaker is Elisha Wiesel -- son of our beloved former member Elie Wiesel, ob"m -- who addressed FAS on June 6th.

The rally, titled: "NO FEAR: A Rally in Solidarity with the Jewish People" will take place in Washington, DC on Sunday, July 11, at 1:00 p.m.

You can find details as they evolve about event logistics and speakers at http:// www.alliance4israel.org/. Please let us know if you would like to join Rabbi Babich at this important rally where we can take a united stand against the cur- rent of anti-Zionism and antisemitism that we have seen in recent months. If you are interested, please contact Rachel Akrongold at 212-838-2122 or by email at [email protected].

SHIVA ASAR B’TAMMUZ, & TISHA B’AV The summer is marked by a three-week period in which we mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples, as well as other tragedies suffered by our people in the course of history. The Three Weeks began with the fast day of Shiva Asar B’Tammuz (the 17th of Tammuz - Sunday, June 27), the anniversary of the day on which the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the enemy. The Three Weeks conclude with the fast day of Tisha B’Av (the ninth of Av).

This is a period of mourning during which, among other things, weddings are not celebrated and haircuts are not taken. The mourning is intensi- fied during the nine days immediately preceding Tisha B’Av, when it is forbidden to eat meat and drink wine, other than on Shabbat. The Nine Days begin on Rosh Chodesh Av (Saturday, July 10) and, like the Three Weeks, culminate on Tisha B’Av. This year, Tisha B’Av begins on Saturday evening, July 17, and continues to sunset on Sunday, July 18.

The fast of Tisha B’Av commences at 8:24 PM on July 17, and concludes at 9:03 PM on July 18. On Saturday evening of Tisha B’Av, at 9:30 PM, Megillat Eicha, the book of Lamentations, is read in the Synagogue. Kinot are recited both in the evening and in the morning. The five forms of affliction observed on - eating/drinking, washing/bathing, anointing one’s body, wearing leather shoes and marital relations - all apply with equal restriction on Tisha B’Av. 5
