Here are a few tricks to make pedaling in a skirt— no matter what the length—a breeze.

irst, a quick discussion about the type of bike you ride: If you have a step-through Fframe (a bike with a dropped center tube), biking in a skirt is much easier. If you have the standard triangle-framed bike, you have to get a little creative.

Here are my top tips based on the type of skirt you want to wear.

Mini-Skirt or Pencil Skirt. Since these are often tight, I recommend choosing a stretchy option that will allow for more comfort and fl exibility while you ride. If your skirt is super short and tight, one option is to hold down the center of the skirt to your seat with one hand while you ride. There is no getting around the awkwardness of this move and it can be tricky and possibly dangerous, so I recommend wearing short spandex shorts underneath your skirt to avoid fl ashing your skivvies. Bikie Girl Bloomers are a fun option (bikiegirlbloomers.com).

Knee-Length Skirt. These are the easiest skirts to bike in with enough material and coverage to easily avoid fl ashing as you ride. Wind can be an issue with these skirts, so consider investing in a skirt weight (visit TandemNY.com for more on this cool product), or check out the “Penny in Yo’ Pants” video on YouTube. When you get off your bike, scoop the skirt material between your legs so you avoid fl ashing.

Long Skirt. Tie the extra material in a knot at the side of your thigh so it doesn’t get caught in your pedals or bike chain. When you dismount, hold the material between your legs or fi nd a wall or an alleyway to hop off your bike near your destination. Remember, fl ashing a wall is fi ne!

Now throw on your cutest skirt and get out and bike stylishly!

3 GREAT RIDES By Becca Heaton IN BOULDER COUNTY We are lucky to have an endless list of great places to ride. Here are three to add to your list.

ON A MOUNTAIN BIKE Valmont Bike Park For all ages! Whether you want to cruise the cross- country trails, test your skills on dirt jumps or launch yourself in the air on the pump track, Valmont Bike Park is the place to go. There’s even a tricycle track for riders in training, plus frequent events and clinics. Located off Valmont Road in Valmont City Park and accessible by bike via the Goose Creek Greenway Trail, Valmont Bike Park is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. as weather and trail conditions allow. Visit Hannah Nordhaus Milo Barkett pedals one of the park’s rolling ramps. ValmontBikePark.org.

Hygiene ON A ROAD BIKE 32 MILES ROUND TRIP FROM BOULDER With its gentle, rolling terrain, this is a popular route for road rides. From Boulder, head north on Broadway until it runs into U.S. 36/ State Route 7. There is a nice, wide shoulder, and on a sunny day, you’ll be in good company with other cyclists. Travel about 12 miles and take a right on Hygiene Road, then pedal 3.8 miles to this cozy little town. Make sure to stash some money for a snack or lunch at the Crane Hollow Cafe. Pedal home the same way, or make it a loop and travel south from town on 75th Street, right on Nelson Road, left on 63rd Street, to Diagonal Highway and back to Boulder. Nikki Javurek enjoys a spring ride to Hygiene.

Hogback Ridge Trail BIKE 2 HIKE Why not mix a bike ride with a hike? A fun option is to ride to the Hogback Ridge Trail and then hike! From Boulder, pedal up along 4th Street until it dead-ends at Linden Avenue. Cross the road and pedal along Wonderland Hill Avenue or the adjacent dirt trail to the multi-use paved path on the left. Take that trail, then at the fork, bear left, cross over Poplar Avenue, and pedal the crushed gravel path around Wonderland Lake all the way until it ends at the parking lot on Lee Hill Road. Lock up your bike and cross over Lee Hill Road to the Hogback Ridge Trail. Hike up to a high point and enjoy great views. Then hike back down and pedal back the way you came, or along bike lanes on Lee Hill Road. A bike to hike is a great way to experience Boulder’s awesome trails.
