One of the state of Arizona’s premier running backs during his prep career at Phoenix Desert Vista High School, Washington, a former track and field standout in addition to his prominence on the gridiron, brings an intriguing athletic presence to the Sun Devil offense. In the fall, a handful of offensive skill players will join the team with the ability to contribute at running back. Skilled and speedy Deantre Lewis of Norco (Calif.) High School was rated by Rivals.com as the nation’s No. 20 running back prospect after rushing for 2,383 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2009, while in-state prod- uct Taylor Walstad of Chandler High School, Arizona’s top senior running back recruit last year, brings a tough, hard-nosed rushing presence to the lineup. Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley (Calif.) High School and Damien Williams of San Diego (Calif.) Mira Mesa High School are expected to arrive in the fall and have the versatility to contribute at multiple positions for the Sun Devils.

WIDE RECEIVER

Perhaps the most noticeable change among ASU’s new offensive game plan will be the diverse, consistent use of the wide receivers as several multiple receiver sets are likely to be employed and a variety of athletes will be used to facilitate the short, intermediate and deep pass- ing game. In addition to the new offensive schemes, many new athletes will be in a position to emerge into duty as with former all-conference honorees Chris McGaha and Kyle Williams off to pursue professional football careers, the onus of responsibility lies in the possession of a new, excit- ing group of Sun Devil receivers. Steve Broussard begins his first season on the Sun Devil staff as ASU’s wide receivers coach. One of the team’s fastest players and a dangerous playmaker, T.J. Simpson likely will be one of the Devils’ top targets as a junior, but will miss spring drills due to injury. A graduate of Peoria (Ariz.) High School, Simpson is expected to be physically ready for fall camp. George Bell signed a National Letter of Intent to attend ASU in February and is on campus to participate in spring drills after a stellar career at Southwestern Community College in San Diego, Calif. Boasting a compelling combination of size and speed, Bell was rated by Rivals. com as the No. 3 junior college wide receiver in the nation and the coun- try’s No. 32 overall junior college recruit this past season. He is expected to immediately compete for time in ASU’s multiple receiver sets. Having only played in one game since the 2006 season due to a variety of injuries, Brandon Smith earned an extension of eligibility from the NCAA this offseason and enters 2010 as a sixth-year senior. When healthy, Smith has shown to be one of the fastest, most outstanding receivers on the squad and he will press for time during his final year as a Sun Devil. Redshirt freshmen Jarrid Bryant and J.J. Holliday and sophomore A.J. Pickens will also add depth at receiver for the Sun Devils. Bryant is a tall, athletic target, while Holliday is a speedy, reliable presence in the pass game. Pickens has been one of the most improved players this Spring. In the fall, junior college transfer Mike Willie, as well as true freshmen Kevin Anderson and Randy Knust will join the team at wide receiver. Speedster Kyle Middlebrooks will also arrive to start his collegiate career and has the versatility to play either tailback or wide receiver.

DEFENSE

In 2009, ASU’s defense burst into one of the most prominent units in college football, ultimately leading the Pac-10 Conference in virtually all prominent defensive statistics and was rated among the nation’s top-30 in several major categories: fourth in third down conversion defense (29.65 pct.), 13th in total defense (297.58 ypg.), 19th in rushing defense DT Lawrence Guy

After beginning his collegiate career at offensive guard, Falahola has developed into one of the team’s most stable defenders and looks to cap off his ASU career as a key member of one of the league’s best defenses. Corey Adams and William Sutton both earned ample playing time as true freshmen last season and likely will serve as two of primary reserves in the tackle rotation as sophomores in 2010. In 12 games with two starts last year, Sutton compiled 17 tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.0 , routinely showing a tenacious knack to relentlessly pressure opposing ball carriers, while Adams, one of the state of Arizona’s most dominant defenders during his prep career at Scottsdale Saguaro High School, appeared in eight games and posted four total tackles before missing time due to an injury that ended his season and limited him in the spring. Veteran Bo Moos provided a formidable presence at tackle when called into an increased role as the season progressed, totaling four tack- les in eight games. A part-time starter during his first two years at ASU, Floyd is recognized as a tremendously intelligent with excel- lent timing and instincts. A native of Los Angeles, Floyd enters his junior season forecasted to be the top option at strong safety and has totaled 22 tackles in 19 career games with five starts. Arguably as athletic as his colleague at safety, Johnson arrived at ASU as a wide receiver before being relocated to safety, while also seeing action as one of the team’s primary kickoff return specialists last season as he saw action in all 12 games with one start at safety. Ranked atop the spring depth chart at free safety, the Mesa (Ariz.) High School gradu- ate is perhaps the most physically gifted safety on the team and has substantially refined his skill set this offseason and enters his sophomore season with very high expectations. Junior college transfer Eddie Elder signed with the Sun Devils in February and is on campus this semester for spring drills following a highly-acclaimed two-year stint at the College of San Mateo (Calif.). As a sophomore in 2009, Elder garnered Junior College All-America honors by Scout.com and corralled 14 interceptions during his two-year career at San Mateo. Speedy, relentless and able to cover a great deal of ground in the secondary, Elder entered spring drills as the top reserve at free safety and will vie for ample action during his first year at ASU. Veterans Jonathan Clark and Max Tabach are listed as the reserves at free safety behind Johnson and Elder. Clark, entering his fourth year in the program and a member of Coach Erickson’s first signing class at ASU, is a versatile athlete able to play multiple positions in the second- ary while Tabach, a Scottsdale native, has appeared in 17 total games including all 12 last year, recording a total of 15 career tackles at ASU. At strong safety, the primary depth consists of a pair of well-rounded redshirt freshman, both of which are capable of making notable contribu- tions as first-year players this season. CB Omar Bolden Matthew Tucker enters 2010 with a wealth of team experience despite

total attempts for a sensational conversion percentage of .809, with a long kick of 53 yards set at UCLA during his redshirt freshman season. The owner of multiple All-America, All-Conference and Academic All-Conference accolades, Weber also served as ASU’s punter during the majority of his first two seasons and is also expected to continue to handle kickoff duties as he has during his entire career. Bobby Wenzig was called into emergency duty as a true freshman last year when Weber missed time due to injury, connecting on 3-of-4 attempts with a long of 43 yards. As a sophomore this season, he will likely serve as the top backup for all major placekicking duties. Punter Trevor Hankins worked his way to a full-time spot in 2009 after limited time the previous season and was an accomplished, reliable punter as a junior, averaging 44.2 yards on 69 punts on the season. Hankins, a Scottsdale native, enters his senior season as ninth-ranked punter in the nation and is also expected to once again serve as ASU’s holder for placekicking attempts. Junior Thomas Ohmart returns for his third season as ASU’s after consistent play at the position during his freshman and sophomore years. Sophomore Jamal Miles, also an exciting, speedy all-purpose offen- sive threat, has the potential to see increased action as a specialist both on kickoff and punt returns, while sophomore Keelan Johnson excelled on kickoff returns last season and likely will return to that duty. Omar Bolden, who ran the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown against Louisiana-Monroe last year, likely will compete for continued spe- cial teams duties while players such as Clint Floyd, LeQuan Lewis, A.J. Pickens, Aaron Pflugrad and T.J. Simpson have the capability to compete for action in the returns game this season.
