Friday, April 3, 2009 – Business Attire

4:00 – 5:00 pm Registration Available Lobby, YouZeum Cherry St. between 6th & 7th Streets Check-in, pick up your materials and visit with fellow members before we kick-off the spring conference. We will gather at the YouZeum, a new interactive science center in Downtown Columbia that focuses on health, wellness and fitness. Parking Information: There are some parking spaces outside the YouZeum. In addition, there are on-street parking spaces as well as public parking garages located at 6th & Cherry Streets and 8th & Cherry Streets which offer free parking after 5 pm.

5:00 – 7:00 pm Welcome & Conference Kick-Off Multipurpose Room, YouZeum Welcome, Jill Brown Networking Activity, Kellie Bray Kick-off the conference with a welcome and networking activities. Before dinner, catch up with your mentor/mentee and network with members as you explore the YouZeum. Following our time at the YouZeum, we will walk one block to the Tiger.

7:00 – 9:00 pm Spirit of Martha Award Dinner Ballroom, Keynote Presentation: Vicky Riback Wilson Cherry & 8th Streets Champagne Toast & Alma Mater Celebrate the spirit of Martha at our annual award banquet dinner. Enjoy an engaging leadership presentation by Mizzou alumna Vicky Riback Wilson before we honor an outstanding woman who is distinguished in her leadership and service. Be sure to sit with your mentor/mentee during dinner. We will close the dinner with a special champagne toast.

9:00 – 10:00 pm Informal Networking Lobby, Tiger Hotel Close the evening by catching up with old friends and making new ones. You may continue to visit in the lobby area or move to Bleu, a new wine bar and restaurant adjoining the Tiger.

Saturday, April 4– Black & Gold Business Casual Dress

8:30 – 9:30 am Breakfast With Your Mentor/Mentee Columns Ballroom Chancellor Brady Deaton will join us for breakfast and deliver a campus update to our membership. Meet your mentor or mentee to begin the day and prepare for the remainder of the conference. Distinguished leaders of Mizzou will also be joining us to meet with Griffiths members and discuss current campus topics of interest. Explore the silent auction items on display in the ballroom. (These items will be available for your bids throughout the day. Proceeds will assist with student and EDNA sponsorships.)

9:30 – 10:00 am Book Club Columns Ballroom Sit in groups based on book you received in the Fall. Last fall, Mizzou alumnus Andrew McCrea shared with us three keys to finding positive results in life. At his luncheon presentation, each member in attendance received a copy of one of McCrea’s publications. Please find a table and join in a discussion about the book or CD you received. If you were not in attendance at the conference, please choose a table and join the conversation.

10:00 – 11:00 am Breakout Session #1

Students: Columns D&E 1A. How Networking Works Facilitator: Anne Baber Panelists: Anna Ayndt-Doyle, Pam Benoit, Cindy Mustard, Suzie Nichols & Joyce Otten Five alumnae talk about the role networking has played in their careers and lives. Facilitated by Anne Baber, join us in this great discussion with five of our alumnae.

Alumnae: Columns D&E 2A. Storytelling as Leadership Presenter: Anne Baber Telling stories has been called “the most powerful tool in a leader’s toolkit.” Learn how to find stories in your own life, structure them using the 5-S Model, and edit them for success.

Noon – 1:15 pm Lunch & Keynote Columns Ballroom Networking & Leadership Presenter: Anne Baber Back by popular demand, alumna Anne Baber is returning to Griffiths to deliver a keynote presentation on networking and leadership. Anne is a co-founder of Contacts Count, an international training and consulting firm that specializes in teaching networking as a professional and business competency. Along with her business partner, she has created a complete, professional and practical system for relationship building.

Group Dynamics Great Room Presenter: Lisa Zanetti, Truman School of Public Affairs Whether you’re a student or alumna, we each work with others as part of a team. Learn more about how to successfully interact with others to accomplish a common goal.

3B. The University’s Response to the Financial Downturn Columns D&E Presenter: Nikki Krawitz Learn more about the University’s response to the current economic situation. Discover how this impacts the campus community as well as well as cost savings measures implemented by the University that may be relevant for you.

2:30 – 3:30 pm Breakout Session #4 4A. Solving Africa’s Weed Problem: Increasing Crop Production & Improving the Lives of Women Great Room Presenter: Leonard Giannessi Preparing fields for planting and weeding crops with hoes takes unbelievable amounts of time. For farmers in Africa, this responsibility usually falls on women and children. As a result, CropLife Foundation, in partnership with CNFA, a Washington-based enterprise development organization non-profit, is launching a demonstration project aimed at helping African farmers learn how to replace back-breaking labor with chemical weed control. Learn more about this project and how it could help revolutionize farming in Africa.

4B. Women in Entrepreneurship Columns D & E Panel Presentation Presenters: Tracey Mershon, Marcia Niekamp & Sabra Tull Meyer Many women have created their own opportunities by building their own business. Hear from several of our members on this topic and learn more about how to create and develop your own business as well as the benefits and challenges associated with being in business for yourself.

5:00 – 6:00 pm Closing Reception & Presentation University Bookstore New Student Center & Mizzou Meeting Planners Association Join us for a closing reception as the spring conference comes to an end. Members will get a sneak peek at the newly constructed leadership area of the MU Student Center, which opens in March, and a great discount at an exclusive shopping event. You will hear brief presentations on the new Student Center expansion project as well as the Mizzou Meeting Planners Association, a relatively new campus organization with close ties to Griffiths. (Several members of Griffiths are involved with MMPA and the organization helped with the spring conference logistics.) The silent auction winners will be announced and items will be available for payment and pick-up.

Downtown Columbia Vicky Riback Wilson, MEd ‘81 Keynote Presenter Vicky Riback Wilson, Service-Learning and Fellowships Coordinator, returned to work at MU following eight years as a Missouri State Representative. In the Legislature, Vicky served as Chair of Appropria- tions for Health and Mental Health and chaired the Children’s Services Commission, in addition to serving on other committees. Prior to being elected to the Legislature in 1996, Vicky was Acting Director of the UM System’s Missouri Rural Innovation Institute and worked statewide with University Extension as a leadership educator for youth and adults. Vicky served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uganda in 1969 and 1970 Spirit of Martha Award Banquet and later worked in Indonesia. Her varied career paths include work as a Head Start teacher, a teacher of English as a Second Language for youth and adults, a community arts administrator, and more than 14 years with the University of Missouri in both administrative and teaching roles. Welcome: Vicky has held local and statewide leadership positions in arts, education, service, business, Jill Brown, Chair professional, and neighborhood organizations. Active in community and political activities, Vicky currently serves on the Heart of America United Way Board. Vicky has been honored with awards for her work for social justice and diversity, mental health, the arts, education, women and children, and the University, as well as for her teaching and mentoring of students. Dinner & Dessert Born in Columbia, Vicky holds a BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania (’68) and a M.Ed. from MU (’81). Vicky lives in Columbia with her husband, Willy. Th ey have two adult children and a new grandchild. Keynote Presentation: Cynthia Mustard, BA ‘65 2009 Spirit of Martha Award Recipient Vicky Riback Wilson As the executive director of the Voluntary Action Center, community volun- teer and active alumna, Cynthia Mustard makes a diff erence in the lives of many people. Cindy earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Mizzou in 1965. Spirit of Martha Award Presentation: A few years after graduation, Cindy joined the staff of Camp Fire, Inc., where she served as the Program and Day Camp Director for almost 20 Jaimie Pfi effer, Chair, Awards & Recognition years. In 1988, she joined the staff of the American Cancer Society and in 1991, Cindy assumed the role of Executive Director of the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) in Columbia.

Her work with the VAC impacts the lives of low income residents of Boone County by providing 2009 Spirit of Martha Award Recipient, emergency assistance and referral services. In this role, Cindy has directly impacted thousands of individuals and families as well as recruited volunteers to help with the needs of the community. Cynthia Mustard In addition to her work as an executive director of a non-profi t, Cindy is also active with a number of community organizations. Cindy serves on the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors, Kappa Kappa Gamma Advisory Committee and Interfaith Council. She is also active with King’s Daughters, Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Columbia Downtown Rotary among others. Champagne Toast Cindy is a selfl ess servant to the community and has been recognized for her service with the Emily Spradling Athena Award from the Women’s Network of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce (2008); Mizzou Alumni Association Alumni Award (2007); League of Women Voters Citizen of the Year Award (2007); Tom Botts Award (2005); and Columbia C.A.R.E.
