About the American Quilter’s Society (AQS) The American Quilter’s Society is the largest membership organization in the world. For 35 years, AQS has been the leading voice in quilting inspiration and advice, through a broad suite of products—magazines, books, live events, contests, workshops, online networks, patterns, fabrics, and catalogs. At AQS, we believe that with inspiration and advice, the creative individual can take their quilting projects beyond what even they had imagined. That is why inspiration is central to everything we do. The leading authors in quilting choose to publish with AQS; the best in quilt artistry select AQS events to display their work; the newest quilters learn from the knowledge and inspiration of AQS members.

To the maximum extent of the law, your attendance and participation, including that of your children and minors accompanying you, in any AQS QuiltWeek workshops, lectures, or special events (paid for or not), is conditioned on your agreement to hereby indemnify American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors from and never to make any claim for injury, loss, or damage to you or your children and minors accompanying you, against American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors, caused by its very own negligence, strict liability, or for any other reason. By signing the registration form, registering online, or paying for show admission, you agree to the above terms and conditions.

5 SHOW Charleston, SC

Welcome to Charleston!

Hello, Charleston! The American Quilter’s Society is pleased to provide a world of quilting excitement at the Charleston Area Convention Center this week as we wrap up our 35th anniversary celebration.

The AQS quilt contest winners are on display—be sure to look at every one and vote for your favorite to win Viewer’s Choice. Browse exhibits, including the 35 Years of AQS Anniversary Showcase Preview, where you’ll find 15 Paducah Best of Show quilts; the International Miniature Quilt Exchange, sponsored by The QuiltShow.com; Bold by Design: Kaffe Fassett, sponsored by The Grace Company; our featured teacher exhibit, Saved From the Fire: Quilts by Melinda Bula; and more.

Stop by the AQS Information Center to inquire about classes remaining with any of the world-class instructors who are with us this week. You’ll also find Special Event tickets there; it's your chance to learn new techniques at the AQS All-Star Review on Wednesday, and imagine the fun you’ll have at Ask David Taylor and Melinda Bula: An Advice Show for Today’s Quilters! on Thursday.

Put on your most comfortable shoes—you won’t want to miss anything! Take a look at the maps and lists in this show book to find out where your favorite vendors are located and which direction to turn for each of the exhibits. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask any AQS staff member.

When you’re not at the show, we hope you’ll spare some time to soak up the incredible history and natural beauty in and around Charleston. Take a fascinating mansion tour, visit one of several local beaches, or enjoy gourmet dining and the remarkably preserved historic downtown area.

Thanks for spending time with us at AQS QuiltWeek in Charleston this year!

Saved From the Fire: Quilts by Melinda Bula The Camp Fire wiped out the entire town of Paradise, when it swept through in November 2018, making it the deadliest fire in the United States in a hundred years. Paradise had been the residence of Melinda Bula and her husband, Joe, for a mere 18 months when their home was completely destroyed. These quilts are survivors, rescued from the blaze in 15 minutes as Joe raced to collect what he could, the fire steadily making its way up their driveway. Today, these are all the quilts Melinda has, and she considers it an honor to display them here.

New Quilts From an Old Favorite: Oak Leaf and Reel The National Quilt Museum holds an annual contest and exhibit called New Quilts from an Old Favorite. Created to acknowledge our quiltmaking heritage and to recognize innovation, creativity, and excellence, the contest challenges today’s quiltmakers to interpret a single traditional quilt block in a work of their own design. The Oak Leaf and Reel is the featured block for 2019. The Oak Leaf pattern, also called Oak Leaf and Reel, combines with appliqué. Traditionally, red and white fabric was often used to make this pattern. The Reel is one of the first block patterns with curves.

Bold by Design: Kaffe Fassett Sponsored by Kaffe Fassett has dedicated the last 50 years of his life to the world of , , and patchwork, promoting these crafts through his own work and encouraging others to find their own creativity. It was 1988, when Kaffe became the first living textile artist to have a one-man show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in , that set the stage for his worldwide popularity. A large part of Kaffe’s output is now an expanding range of fabric prints for the patchwork market, along with his Indian striped fabric and shot cotton fabric, which are distributed worldwide by Westminster Fibers, USA and Rowan, UK. He teaches individuals all over the world to work with color in an instinctive way. Kaffe’s unique sense of color, drive to create, and desire to encourage others has led to his reputation as a guru in the world of color and textiles.

International Miniature Quilt Exchange Sponsored by

TheQuiltShow.com sponsored a quilt exchange between U.S. and international quiltmakers. The goal of the project was to connect quiltmakers to learn about each other – to show that we are more alike than different. The teams were paired on a first-come basis; they developed a pen-pal-like relationship to learn about each other and their quiltmaking styles, as well as to develop friendships. The only criteria was that the quilts needed to be a maximum of 24” and a minimum of 18”. From the 300 quilts (150 teams), 24 teams (48 mini quilts) were selected based on their stories for this traveling exhibit.

Quilts of Valor – A 50 State Salute

The Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) presents quilts representing 24 states that will be awarded to veterans and military who have been touched by war. The “50 State Salute” exhibit features quilts made in patriotic designs from the simple to the complex. Members of the QOVF range from young beginning quilters in the “Under Our Wings” program to experienced members who have been making Quilts of Valor for many years. These quilts are meant to inspire all levels of quiltmakers and showcase the many possibilities for expressing gratitude to our military through quilts. This exhibit will be displayed at AQS QuiltWeek Shows throughout 2019. After its last stop at The National Quilt Museum from November 2019 to February 2020, the quilts will be awarded to veterans and military in Paducah, Kentucky. Stop at the Quilts of Valor booth in the exhibit area for more quilts, the exhibit book, and information about the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
