Acker, Kathy. Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula. By the Black Tarantula. New York: TVRT/Viper's Tongue, 1975. First trade edition. Perfect- bound printed wrappers. Acker’s first novel, published under her pseudonym, “The Black Tarantula.”

Berrigan, Ted, editor. “C” A Journal of Poetry. C: A Journal of Poetry first appeared in May of 1963, edited by Ted Berrigan and published by Lorenz Gude. Not an exclusively gay publication, but many of the contributors were LGBT, including the likes of John Ashbery, Joe Brainard, and Alice B. Toklas. Brainard designed most of the covers, although in the case of issue number four, Andy Warhol contributed a silkscreen print for the cover. This is a very rare complete run of the journal, encompassing all twelve issues.

Borland, Bryan. DIG. Fairfax: Stillhouse Press, 2016. Bryan Borland is the founder and publisher of Sibling Rivalry Press, an independent publishing house that he runs with his husband, Seth Pennington. This is Mr. Borland’s latest book of poetry, for which he received the Lambda Literary 2016 Judith A. Markowitz Emerging Writer Award. Brainard, Joe. Cigarette Book. New York: Siamese Banana Press, 1972. First edition. 4to, offset printed at the Print Center. Stab- stapled into an illustrated cover. One of Brainard’s best artists’ books, a freewheeling and occasionally self-referential take on the subject of smoking which matches texts by Brainard alongside his drawings. Despite being only attributed to Brainard, the work also includes texts by James Schuyler and a poem by Ted Berrigan.

Brown, Rita Mae. Rubyfruit Jungle. Vermont: Daughters Inc., 1973. Brown’s first novel, remarkable for its explicit portrayal of lesbianism. Inscribed by the author on the title page: “Gene—Hug the man who gives you this. Rita Mae.” A gift of Gene Berry and Jeffrey Campbell.

Cawthorne, Nigel. Sex Lives of Famous Lesbians. : Prion, 2005. Cawthorne’s book contains a mixture of the glamorous, the tragic, the excessive, the absurd, and the downright comic. It aims to excite and amuse, while giving a genuine insight into the characters of those people who have shaped our history and culture. A gift of Gene Berry and Jeffrey Campbell.

Spring 2017 Page 2 Doty, Mark. Bethelehem in Broad Daylight. Boston: David R. Godine, 1991. Inscribed by the author on the title page “Mark Doty 5.16.05.” This is the first Edition of the author’s second book as Mark Doty, offering poems on travel, literature, history, childhood, myth, and human sexuality. A gift of Gene Berry and Jeffrey Campbell.

Duberman, Martin. Saving Remnant: The Radical Lives of Barbara Deming and David McReynolds. New York: New Press, 2011. This is Duberman’s revealing dual portrait of Barbara Deming and David McReynolds, two influential American activists. Deming, a feminist, writer, and nonviolent activist, was an out lesbian from the age of sixteen. McReynolds was the first openly gay man to run for president on the Socialist Party ticket. A gift of Gene Berry and Jeffrey Campbell.

Duncan, Robert and Jess. Caesar’s Gate: Poems, 1949-50. Berkeley: Sand Dollar, 1972. Second edition, first hardcover printing. Cover and internal illustrations throughout by Jess. One of 600 copies.

Enszer, Julie R. Avowed. Little Rock: Sibling Rivalry Press, 2016. Enzer’s poetry in Avowed has been described by Robin Becker as “bold and wise, compassionate and erotic. The poems explore aspects of a contemporary lesbian life within a committed relationship and as a citizen in the larger community.”

Spring 2017 Page 3 Ford, Charles Henri. Half-Thoughts the Distances of Pain. New York: Prospero, 1947. First edition. Signed by Ford across the colophon statement, and additionally inscribed, “To Dear Alvin [Colt] / from Baba /Christmas / 1948.” Illustrated with a drawing by Dmitri Petrov, who also designed this book. The colophon calls for 20 copies signed by both Ford and Petrov, this is likely an out-of-sequence copy. Prospero Pamphlet No. 1.

Gooch, Brad. Smash Cut: A Memoir of Howard & Art & the ‘70s & the ‘80s. New York: Harper Collins, 2015. A searing memoir of life in 1980s , complete with appearances by Madonna, , and William Burroughs. A gift of Gene Berry and Jeffrey Campbell.

Hollinghurst, Alan. Swimming Pool Library. London: Chatto & Windus, 1988. Signed by author on title page. The Swimming Pool Library won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1988, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1989. said of it: “surely the best book about gay life yet written by an English author.” A gift of Gene Berry and Jeffrey Campbell.

Spring 2017 Page 4 Kondoleon, Harry with etchings and lithographs by Mark Beard. Cote d’Azure Triangle. New York: Vincent Fitzgerald, 1985. One of 119 copies signed by author and artist. Letterpress printed at the Wild Carrot Press on RIVES BFK paper in Janson type. Beard has juxtaposed line etchings on top of color lithographs with stunning effect. They include a large folding plate resembling a stage set. With three paper dolls of the protagonists: wife, husband, and the husband’s lover in their bathing suits and sunglasses. The three characters play out their vapid lives on the Riviera until consumed by sea dragons.

Sappho. Poetry of Sappho. With prints by Julie Mehretu. San Francisco: Arion Press, 2012. In Poetry of Sappho painter Julie Mehretu has created prints for her first artist book. Twenty prints by Mehretu alternate with pages of poetry in Greek and in English. Four additional prints with hand coloring are presented in portfolio. The new English translations were commissioned for this edition from poet John Daley and classicist Page duBois.

Williams, Jonathan. Illustrations by Joe Brainard. gAy BCs. Champaign: Finial Press, 1976. Explicit, naughty, witty, drawn with obvious gusto. In 1975, Joe Brainard did 26 lovingly- detailed illustrations--most of them quite explicit--to accompany a short poem, “gAy BCs,” by the protean Jonathan Williams, of Jargon Society fame. The results were printed in an edition of 1,000 numbered copies by A. Doyle Moore’s Finial Press. gAy BCs is perhaps the finest example of Brainard's homoerotic art, which he himself valued highly. Moore's choices of ink and paper make them look amazingly like original pencil/graphite drawings. Limited edition. Stapled chapbook.
