Clinical Fellow in Rehabilitation Medicine

Job Description:

The primary responsibility of the post holder will be to supervise an F2 trainee in the management of patients in the Level 2a Specialist Rehabilitation Programme on Portland Ward and other patients with neurological disability. The post holder will support Dr J P S Burn, Consultant in Rehabilitation and Brain Injury, in the work of the countywide Brain Injury Service, seeing referrals and participation in the administration and governance of the service. They will work in close liaison with Clinical and associated specialist community teams.

There is a fortnightly clinic list focusing on patients with long term conditions and an opportunity to learn techniques of Botulinum toxin injection and other local treatments in a fortnightly Spasticity Clinic.

The post holder will also be offered an opportunity to spend one day a week gaining further Rehabilitation Medicine experience through community attachments, work with musculoskeletal and prosthetic services and participation with the NeuroSmart team at the Royal Hospital.

The unit has extensive experience in educational supervision and assessment and prepares trainees for entry into the specialist register through the CESR route. There is no on-call responsibility.

Background:

Neurology and Neurorehabilitation Services are integrated in Dorset with four Consultant Neurologists, two Specialist Trainees and a Consultant in Rehabilitation and Brain Injury working together in the Neurological Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit at Poole Hospital. The Rehabilitation Consultant works also works within the Trauma Units at both Poole and Dorchester as part of the Dorset Brain Injury Service. This comprises a specialist community team and an NHS England funded inpatient rehabilitation service on Portland Ward. Portland Ward has twelve beds with up to ten patients following an inpatient rehabilitation programme at any one time. There are two well developed inpatient therapy teams, one focusing on complex patients with Acquired Brain Injury on the specialist programme and the other offering specialist neurological rehabilitation to patients both on and off the ward.

Poole Hospital is a medium sized hospital of 750 beds that looks to Southampton for neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery and The Royal Bournemouth Hospital for urology

1 but otherwise has a full complement of medical specialities. It is characterised by a strong ethos and high staff morale. In October 2020 both hospitals joined to become University Hospitals Dorset. Over the next five years acute services will be developed at the Royal Bournemouth site and the Poole Hospital site will focus on elective services and an expanded rehabilitation service.

Person Specification:

Essential Desirable

Qualities: Medical qualification MRCP or other UK post- recognised by the GMC. graduate qualification. Home office approval to reside and work in the UK.

Experience: At least three years’ Previous training in experience since Rehabilitation Medicine, qualification in general Neurology or Psychiatry. medicine and related specialties

Additional Experience: Up to date competence in Up to date training in general basic resuscitation. professional skills as practised in the UK.

It is hoped that it might be possible for the post holder to rotate after one year to other hospitals in the Wessex Region and gain further experience of the specialty. This could include rotations to The Western Hospital, Southampton (Regional Spasticity Service, Major Trauma), Salisbury District Hospital (Pain, Spinal Unit), Portsmouth (Stroke, Brain Injury, Prosthetics)
