Pilley went from scrapping through to finishing runner up in this prestigious event. Pilly was the 8th player to qualify for the World Series Finals which features the best 8 players in the World at season end. Mike Corren (6) won his 5th City of Kalgoorlie & Boulder Golden Open with a 6 3-0 victory against Korea's Ko Youngjo (3). In 2014 at the same event, Corren won his 50th PSA title and established a record for being the oldest player to win a PSA tour title at 40 years of age. He has now extended that to 42! Rex Hedrick finished runner up to Kiwi Paul Coll in the PSA M15 New Zealand 12 International Classic played at Palmerston North. Hedrick was beaten 5-11, 7- 11, 1-11. Squash Australia announced that the “Queen of the Court” Nicol David will play 14 two exhibition matches at the 2016 Australian Open. The Malaysian superstar ruled the World of Squash for a record 108 months as the #1 ranked player between August 2006 and June 2015. David won a record 8 World Open titles. Tamika Saxby won her second PSA Tour Title in 3 weeks when she defeated 19 Lisa Camilleri (2) to win the Sandgate Open 11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 11-1. Josh Larkin (6) went down swinging to Peter Creed (4) from Wales in the 19 quarter finals of the PSA M10 Squashways Christchurch International Open 9- 11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 7-11 in a marathon match lasting 84 minutes. WSF World Masters Championships entries close 12 August. Notable 22 Australian entries so far include 2014’s champions Sarah Fitz-Gerald and Brain Cook. Fitz-Gerald is a two-time World Champion in the women’s Over 45 event while Cook lays claim to four world champion titles ranging the Over-45 to Over 65 event. Whilst the match was tight Dowling would have been feeling the effects of a tough semi final against Enzo Corigliano (France) which went for 62 minutes. That match up was extremely tight and required Dowling to fight back from 1-2 down. Larkin got off to a slow start in his first round match against sentimental favourite Mike Corren but once he hit top gear it was all over for the “Moose”! He then beat Alex Eustace to advance to the semi final where he eliminated qualifier Tomotaka Endo from Japan. To David Palmer and Rachael Grinham ... once again thank you for so many wonderful memories over 20 years at the CG. David Palmer has now won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals from 6 Games (in actual fact it is 9 medals from 5 Games because he didn’t win a medal at his first Games appearance). I’m proud to say I was in the audience to witness your 9th medal ... GOLD! Rachael Grinham has now won 2G, 2S and 4B from 5 Games. Another fantastic record of achievement. Winning medals at the Commonwealth Games is a wonderful achievement but as 41 year olds ... well that is simply incredible! Steve Walton put it best “I thought they did a sensational job because the pressure is immense. The amount of information that they have to manage now is quite extreme particularly when you are the main ref in centre court and you have ear pieces, iPads, 2 competitive players and you are seated right amongst the spectators that groan every time a decision goes against their player.     ASP CONGRATULATIONS ASP Cuskelly Reaches Last 16 of PSA World Championships ASP squashmedia .com.au A NEW DIRECTION The ASP Newsletter has moved to a Quarterly Edition. Sadly, there isn’t sufficient “Aussie” action to warrant a monthly publication. However, when the activity increases the publication will move back to being published monthly. Without sounding negative it is very hard to get excited about the Australian Squash Tour for 2019. Events are few and far between and there are too many CLOSED events. Some clubs/centres have simply not announced their event for 2019 ... please do so ASAP. It is alarming from this perspective ... players will now be forced to go overseas to chase world ranking points and competition. It’s now going to be an even slower climb up the ladder if you want to be a professional squash player based in Australia. Taking out closed events which attract minimal PSA points, so far the calendar for men is offering just 9 events! There are 7 x C5, one C10 and a C20 event (congratulations to the organisers of the Squash Melbourne event who are now offering an event with prizemoney greater than the Australian Open). For the women it is even worse 6 events! 4 x C5 and 2 x C10 events. Besides sponsorship another impact on whether a promoter decides to run an event or not is the currency exchange. Prizemoney is given out in US Dollars. Currently, the Aussie Dollar is low in comparison to the USD so there is an increased financial risk for promoters.
