The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

For those of us fortunate enough to be in Wanganui for the first match of the Central League play off - it was a fabulous day, a fabulous performance and a really enjoyable experience at a vibrant and noisy Wembley Park. Football is on the rise and it was great to see a large crowd and vocal support for both teams. It was heartening to see such a positive vibe and football being played with passion and fire at club level. And Wanganui Athletic have a wonderful infrastructure with so many playing fields plus fabulous clubroom facilities.

Getting back into Central League is such a difficult task and after the disappointment of last year’s playoff we learnt a lot about what was needed to reach that final hurdle. A lot of the preparation was done differently than in 2013 and it must have helped with the strong performance. We return to Hutt Park with our noses in front. There is no complacency, no over confidence. Just a team Coach, Captain and some other guy! determined to put in a good performance and get a result.

For Wanganui I applaud their season. Unbeaten in the Federation League and conceding just 8 goals is a fine record. I’m sure last week was simply a “bad day at the office” and with a “nothing to lose attitude” they will be a dangerous proposition.

I would also like to mention our “brains trust”. Chris Sambrooke relished the challenge of getting a championship winning team to repeat that result in Ages combined - still younger than JT! 2014. What a fine job he’s done. The calming influence of Manager Paul Commerford has helped immensely, and with Scotty back from his US sojourn we now have a Technical or is it Tactical Adviser in the mix? With former CF FDO Stu Pyne on the fringes and current CF FDO Paul Greig in the squad we have a very capable backroom staff; as good as anything going around. But it’s the players that deserve special mention. No doubt this group are a talented bunch of footballers, but what sets them apart is their camaraderie and team spirit. They look after each other on and off the field, support club functions and even organise club fundraising events. Ably lead by “the rock” Captain Jason Tipping the are very worthy club men.

To Joe, Regan and Steve who for various reasons can’t3 take the field today, you have all been integral to the success of this team in the 2014 season and whatever the result today the club is immensely proud of the whole squad and their contribution to the club. Chris Canton, President

A warm welcome to the home of Stop

FROM THE CHAIRMAN, Neil Kemp Out for the last game of our season. And what a year it’s been for the Club. Firstly, on a personal note I’d like to thank our many coaches, managers, volunteers and supporters across all teams for helping make 2014 a season to remember. Your work behind the scenes has been phenomenal and has played an integral part of the success we have enjoyed on and off the field.

Our Juniors numbers have grown thanks to the incredible work by a committed group of volunteers to deliver a fantastic programme for our kids. And of course, the success of our U-17’s led by Justin Raffan deserves special mention. Well done team!

Our Women’s teams have had another great season and our presence on the local scene is now the envy The bar’s open! Great work Kath. of many Clubs thanks to the incredible work of all concerned. And this is all about to extend to the National arena, as Stop Out will be hosting the inaugural Women’s U-20 National Tournament in November at Hutt Park. This will be the first year of what we expect to be yet another landmark football event created by Stop Out.

Congratulations also to all our senior teams. In particular, our die-hard Masters have achieved long After 18 years, the Blacks are Champs! overdue success in 2014. We’re certain their celebrations will be continuing for some time yet – well done fella’s. Our U-19 lads under the guidance of Stu Pyne are also building up nicely for the Labour Weekend Napier Tournament. It’s been great to see many of them exposed to the rigours of senior football throughout the season, and also how well they have advanced on this important stepping stone towards their Senior playing careers. And so are the Reds! Finally, September 13 2014 has been a day we’ve all been waiting for. On behalf of everyone at the Club - best wishes to Sambo, JT and all the first team squad for today’s final playoff leg against Wanganui Athletic. Stop Out 3, Seatoun 0 Match Report Stop Out vs Seatoun Chris Sambrooke Hutt Park 1, 30th August We welcomed Seatoun to Hutt Park for the last game of the Goals: Conway 2, Cherbel. league season. The result the week before when we had a week off MOM Rob Sansom meant we were confirmed champions heading into the final game. A fantastic outcome for the team to win the Venus Shield two years in a row. Our mind-set heading into the game was to finish strongly with good preparation for the Central League playoffs beginning the following week.

With a mid-week injury to our Goalkeeper Matthew Everard, it presented an opportunity for Reserve Team & U19 Goalkeeper Logan Van Der Vegt to make his first team debut.

We started brightly and took the lead with only 30 seconds on the clock, a great passing move was finished off by Simon Enrico goes close! Conway at the back post. If anything I think scoring took some of the momentum away from us, we seemed to relax a bit and the intensity level wasn’t where we wanted it to be. That being said we still controlled the game well and were threatening fairly regularly. Midway through the 2nd we were given a free-kick at the edge of the area, Cherbel finished expertly and was keen to make sure his Fizz gets 1 on 1 with the keeper long time hero Steven Gulley was aware of what happened.

6

At half time we stressed the importance of the clean sheet, and setting the defensive standards that we wanted to take into the playoffs. The intensity in the second half was much improved, we showed confidence in moving the ball and a desire to get it back when we were out of possession. The back four were looking strong and well organised. Rob Sansom turned in a man of the match performance with his timing and aggression to come out of the line to win possession back and get us moving forward on the counter. Simon Conway added his second of the game and his sixth in his last three to complete the scoring.

Huge congratulations to the players, Capital Premier is such a competitive league and is very hard to win. They have done so twice in a row and have one more hurdle to get over to complete all of their targets for the season.

CENTRAL LEAGUE Play off vs Wanganui Athletic. Chris Sambrooke

Wanganui 0, Stop Out 4 To get the best preparation possible for the first leg of the Wembley Park 6th September playoffs we headed to Wanganui a day early to save any

Scorers: Maluvik 2, Zarka, Packer. heavy legs from a journey on the morning of the game. We were aware that Athletic were a strong side, many players MOM Miroslav Maluvik had Central or National League experience and they had won their league without losing a game and only conceding 8 goals in the process.

We were comfortable with the amount of information we had picked up on how they played and were confident that the game plan we were taking in to the match would serve us well.

We started positively; we were getting into dangerous areas and were working hard to win the ball when we didn’t have it. We had a corner 10 minutes in which wasn’t completely cleared and Sam Zarka smashed the ball home to make it 1-0. We were denied a penalty straight after when Simon Conway Great start, great finish and it’s 1-0. Zarka! beat his man and drew contact, but calls were waived away. On 15 minutes Micky scored from a similar range as Zarka to make it 2-0. For the rest of the half we were continuing to pose a threat without being able to

score. At the back we were strong and contained the Athletic threat pretty well, the only time we looked vulnerable was from set piece but Rarda coming back from injury showed a lot of confidence to come and collect.

Halftime we stressed the importance of keeping a clean sheet and taking at least a two goal lead home with us.

10

The second half began well, we continued to get the ball into our wingers with space to attack. Micky scored his second of the game with a fantastic strike across the keeper from the edge of the area to make it 3. He was then denied the goal of the game when he

lifted the ball over the defender and rifled a bicycle kick into the top corner, only for it to be disallowed for a high foot. Micky was a constant threat and almost scored again but put the ball just wide.

Heading into the final stages of the game Packer scored from a late run into the box to make the score 4-0. We could and should have added another one late on but to take a 4-0 score line home to Hutt Park was a good result.

We look forward to getting home and in front of a good home crowd to support us in our last game. We ‘Rarda’ dominantes! won’t lose focus on the importance of another strong performance to complete the goal of getting into the 2015 Central League.

Goal scorer Martin Packer 2 goals and a MOM performance from Micky

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out fan Mike Barton

On the Cusp of... gives us his personal Wembley is a name synonymous with view on the beautiful football. For many people, even globally, game! the name, Wembley, immediately conjures up the image of an atmospheric football stadium in North London. For others, as I recently discovered, the name Wembley means live music at that same stadium. For me the name means football. So, like many at Stop Out, I got a bit of a kick of of the idea that last weekend Stop Out played at Wembley (Park). In the run up to that match I had told friends, mostly overseas, that 'we are at

Wembley this weekend'. None of them fell for the corny line. All I got was replies, mostly, saying 'groan'. That said one friend in New York was kind enough to send me the Google Maps link directing me to Wembley Park, Whanganui.

Then minor disaster struck and I got sick. Finally Stop Out were at Wembley and I could not go to the the match . So I guess I have to settle for my two tenuous Stop Out connections with Wembley. The stadium in London and not the park in Whanganui. In

September 1993 I watched England play Poland and if my memory is correct I believe that Bill Healy, one of our Masters' legends, was in amongst the 70,220, along with myself, that watched it. The other was the epic 1996 promotion play-off between Darlington and Plymouth Argyle that Alastair Robb and I went to. So last week's visit to Wembley Park means that Al has done the 'double' of Wembleys. Yet another record for the club. It would be fascinating to know how many from Whanganui have made that same trek.

Back to the reality of the task. A four nil lead is a great one to take into a second leg match at home. My feeling, based on what I have heard, right now there is no complacency in the camp. This is not likely to change. The last time we went through this promotion process we were very solid in our two home matches. The cliché of the week must be that the game only finishes at the final whistle on match day.

Being absent last week made me reliant on texts and social media. The afternoon at home, sitting there with my device in hand waiting for the score to come through, was so evocative of another time. In my youth it was three in the morning with radio in hand trying to catch the signal from the BBC World Service and waiting for those results to come through... Last weekend, the voice from the other room would shout “how are they getting on?”. I would reply along the lines 'we were two nil up last I heard'. Then the voice from the other room said, “why don't you just phone Chris and Al and ask them for an update?”. It was at that point that twenty first century reality reared its head...
