Company Profile Infineon Technologies Austria AG Company Profile Infineon Technologies Austria AG Infineon Technologies Austria AG, headquartered in Villach and with further research and development centers in Graz and Linz, is an affiliated company of Infineon Technologies AG Munich, Germany: Infineon Austria develops and produces semiconductors and system solutions for applications in the market segments • Automotive and Industrial (AI): Airbags, ABS, power switches, engine management, sensors • Secure Mobile Solutions (SMS): Electronic ID cards, healthcare cards, encrypted computer links, radio controllers, new UMTS and GPRS mobile radio generations, base stations • Wireline Communications (COM): Telephony via Internet, ADSL and VDSL (fastest form of Internet communication) With development and production concentrated at one site, and specializing in automotive electronics, Villach was the natural choice as the Competence Center for Power Electronics for the whole of Infineon Technologies. Chips branded “Made in Villach” are in use all over the world. AI Headquarters Villach: The Villach facility already dedicates 80% of its production capacity to the Automotive and Industrial Group. Austria is home for approx. 20% of AI’s global research and development activities. The relocation of AI Headquarters and substantial parts of AI’s Power Management & Supply and Technology & Innovation Divi- sions to Villach shortens the decision routes and makes competencies more densely concentrated. Production: Highly qualified personnel and rigorous quality assurance (ISO certified) ensure maximum customer satisfac- tion. This has been a consistent thread since the facility was founded in 1970. Together with the Infineon production facilities at Munich Perlach and Regensburg in Germany, Villach forms a manufacturing cluster, known as the “PowerFab”. Within this PowerFab, Villach provides the greatest production capacity for power technologies – the factory ships in the region of 10 billion chips each year. Research and Development Infineon Technologies Austria AG owns the largest microelectronics development unit in Austria. The devel- opment centers in Villach and Graz and the Infineon subsidiaries DICE and COMNEON in Linz employ around 600 specialists, all dedicated to developing further innovative concepts for future chip generations and system solutions. With its R&D expenditure and investment in pre-production development cooperation projects, Infineon Technologies Austria AG ranks second among industrial enterprises in Austria in terms of development spend. Primarily through loans to build up the economy and diplomatic pressure, the United States and Great Britain helped to maintain an independent Austrian state and prevent an Anschluss or union with Germany from 1918 to 1934. In addition, this study examines the minority of Austrians who opposed an Anschluss . The three main groups of Austrians that supported independence were the Christian Social Party, monarchists, and some industries and industrialists. These Austrian nationalists cooperated with the Americans and British in sustaining an unwilling Austrian nation. Ultimately, the global depression weakened American and British capacity to practice dollar and pound diplomacy, and the popular appeal of Hitler combined with Nazi Germany’s aggression led to the realization of the Anschluss .

  • The Slovene Carinthians and the 1920 Plebiscite
SPRAWY NARODOWOŚCIOWE Seria nowa / naTiOnaliTIES AFFairs New series, 48/2016: 85–105 DOI: 10.11649/sn.2016.006 Maria isabella reinhard “an isOlaTed Case”*: The slOvene CarinThians and The 1920 PlebisCiTe absTraCT The end of WWI saw the dissolution of the multiethnic Cen- tral European Empires and the formation of new states based on Woodrow Wilson’s concept of national self-determination. This article underlines the limitations of Wilsonian national self-determination, focusing on the Slovene Carinthians and the pro-Austrian result of the 1920 plebiscite. The outcome of the plebiscite exemplifies that minorities are motivated by more than solely ethno-linguistic reasons when deciding what state to belong to. Even though other factors existed, the key motivations for Slovene Carinthians to remain with Austria were of economic and political nature. It will be con- tended that the importance of the centuries long accultura- tion of Slovene Carinthians to Austria brought them closer to Austria than to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Additionally the phrasing of the plebiscite made Slovene Car- inthians’ decision a question of state preference rather than ethno-linguistic identity. Moreover, the unpleasant occupation of parts of Carinthia by the troops of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and the higher effectiveness of Austri- an propaganda played a key role in the vote of many Slovene Carinthians. Lastly, the majority of Slovene Carinthians being farmers, reliant on Austrian trade opportunities, swayed them ............................... toward a pro-Austrian vote. Thus, the Carinthian plebiscite of Maria isabella reinhard 1920 builds a strong case against the assumption that ethno- University of St Andrews, St.

  • History and Present IT Augmentation of Europe's Largest Landscape
Multimodal Technologies and Interaction Article Analogue Meets Digital: History and Present IT Augmentation of Europe’s Largest Landscape Relief Model in Villach, Austria Manfred F. Buchroithner Institute for Cartography, Dresden University of Technology, 01069 Dresden, Germany; [email protected] Received: 30 April 2019; Accepted: 12 June 2019; Published: 20 June 2019 Abstract: Brought to completion in 1913 after a production time of 24 years, the landscape relief model of Carinthia (Kärnten), on display in Villach, Austria, is, at 182 m2, the largest of its kind in Europe. It is painted with nature-like land-cover information and presents the whole federal state of Carinthia and its surroundings including Austria’s highest peak, Großglockner, at a scale of 1:10,000. From 2016 to 2018, a series of computer-generated and partly computer-animated educational contents for rental tablets as well as for projection onto the terrain model and above it have been produced. Their topics are briefly presented. The described Relief von Kärnten is also a paramount example and master copy of how to improve the attractivity of historical physical landscape relief models by means of state-of-the-art information technology. The article is, furthermore, meant to raise awareness for a piece of “geo-art”, which is worth being known at an international scale by both experts and laymen. Keywords: landscape relief model; true-3d; largest terrain model of Europe; history of landscape relief models; 3d terrain modelling and representation; digitally animated projection upon landscape relief model; physical landscape relief models and its augmentation 1. Introduction It may be considered a strange fact that the largest landscape relief model of its kind in Europe is—even in times of a revival of 3D visualizations—almost unknown amongst professionals, not to mention the laymen.
