JONES COUNTY COMMISSIONERS YEAR IN REVIEW 2020 saw fi v e t r a ffi c fatalities

Debbie Lurie-Smith [email protected]

Traffic fatalities for 2020 totaled five with the final accident taking place in the early morning hours of Dec. 30. Just as everything else that took place in 2020, the investigation of three of Jones County’s five fatal- ities had unexpected results. It appears that medical issues and/or possibly even the sudden deaths of two of the drivers, while they were ALAINA CLARKE/Staff behind the wheel, caused those District 4 Commissioner Wendy Vaughn (left) and District 2 Commissioner John Wood are sworn into offi ce accidents. Debbie Lurie-Smith [email protected]

A new commissioner for Jones County’s District 3 was sworn in last week and brings a dynamic to the board that has been missing for a couple of decades. When Wendy Brown Vaughn took her oath of office Jan. 5 to take her place on the Jones County Board of Commissioners, it was the first time since 2000 that there has been a woman on the board. Former District 2 commissioner, the late Dr. Bettye Bland Williams, did not run for reelection in the 2000 election, and former District 1 commissioner Susan Green lost her bid for reelection, also in ALAINA CLARKE/Staff 2000. Allen said having adopted animals spayed or neutered is required by the Department of Agriculture. Currently they attempt for follow up on the procedures after adoptions, but that is almost impossible. “We will continue fundraising and hope to be able to give a large portion back to the county,” she said.
