There are 30 teams in Major League Baseball. The teams are divided into two leagues, the National League (NL) and the American League (AL). There are fifteen teams in each League. 4 | LOS ANGELES DODGERS There are 9 innings in a baseball game. Each team gets a turn to bat in half of the inning, while the other team is out in the field. The visiting team is first to bat while the home team takes the field and starts the game with the first pitch. Each team is allowed three outs in their half of an inning. THE FAIR TERRITORY

HOME PLATE FOUL TERRITORY Common Baseball Terms Strike Zone An area above the plate that pitchers are trying to throw the ball into. Think of it like an invisible target above the plate that the pitcher is trying to pitch to.

Strike A pitch in the strike zone that the umpire calls a strike, a pitch a batter swings and misses, or when a batter hits a foul ball Ball A pitch outside of the strike zone Foul ball A ball that isn’t hit into the fair part of the field Fair territory In-bounds Foul territory Out of bounds Hit When the batter uses his bat to hit the ball into fair territory and makes it safely to a base Walk When the pitcher throws four balls to a batter Out There are many ways to get out in baseball, here are a few: • If a batter gets three strikes, they are out. • If the batter hits a ball into the air and a player on the other team catches it. After getting out, the player returns to the dugout and waits for the half inning to be over or for their next turn to bat. When there are three outs, the half-inning is over and the team in the field gets to hit. Single When a batter gets a hit and makes it safely to first base Double When a batter gets a hit and makes it safely to second base Triple When a batter gets a hit and makes it safely to third base Home Run When a player hits a ball, usually over the fence, and makes it safely around all four bases Run When a player makes it around all of the bases without getting out, they score a run. RBI When a player gets a hit that allows one or more runners to cross home plate, they get credited with “Run(s) Batted In”

In preparation to play in the Major Leagues after they get drafted, baseball players spend time playing for teams in the minor leagues. When a player does well, they are moved up to the next level. All together, these teams are called the “farm system.”
