A Twist in the Wind Stanley Friedman

The University of Memphis Wind Ensemble, along with ten other consortia schools, commissioned Stanley Friedman for a 17-minute work titled A Twist in the Wind. The premiere took place on April 21, 2005 by the U of M Wind Ensemble, Kraig Alan Williams, conductor. The work is at once hauntingly passionate for the wood- winds, brimming with ingenious rhythmic intensity interspersed with aria-like solos. His harmonic language produces brass sonori- ties that captivate the listener, luring one deeper into the dramatic intensity that seemingly boils over at the very end.
