2012 EXHIBITION SCHEDULE
February 1 - February 29 The 15th Ward The 15th Ward was a Syracuse neighborhood bordering the Erie Canal. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became one of the largest Jewish neighborhoods in upstate New York. Beginning in the 1940s, as Jewish residents relocated to the eastern suburbs, African Americans moved into the neighborhood building a thriving cultural area that included jazz clubs and churches. The 15th Ward met its end when the construction of Interstate 81 two state hospitals and the federal urban renewal program led to the demolition of most of the homes and businesses in the area and the removal of nearly all of the residents. This is an exhibition of photographs of Syracuse's 15th Ward. (In collaboration with the Graduate Program in Museum Studies at Syracuse University)
April 11 - May 28 The Irish and the Canal For centuries, immigrants have left Ireland in search of a new life in the United States, bringing with them their unique culture and temperament. Perhaps no other topic in American history better illustrates Irish America’s changing face than that of the Erie Canal. Historian James Zibro conducted research at the Erie Canal Museum in 2010 and 2011 to develop this exhibit for the opening of the new Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, New York. (In collaboration with the Irish American Heritage Museum)
June 1 – September 7 The Locks of the Erie Canal Pen and Ink Renderings of 57 Barge Canal locks by Ray Sax. North Syracuse artist, Ray Sax, visited Lock 24 with his wife Betty and decided to make a pen and ink drawing. The couple enjoyed the afternoon so much that they began visiting other locks and drawing them too. Over the next four years, going from lock to lock, Sax completed a series of 57 beautiful drawings. (Funded in part by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor)
September 14 – November 7 The Other New York A first-time juried art exhibition developed as a countywide collaboration between all museums, many galleries and public spaces in Syracuse. “The Other New York” will feature artists from all parts of New York State except New York City and Long Island. The Museum’s gallery will exhibit an installation by Buffalo artist, Michael Bosworth. (In collaboration with the Everson Museum of Art)
November 23 – January 6 27th Annual Gingerbread Gallery A Syracuse tradition, the annual Gingerbread Gallery features gingerbread creations made of 100% edible materials by local amateur and professional bakers.
