Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eye Exposure: In case of contact with eyes, flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Assure adequate flushing by separating the eyelids with fingers. Call a physician.

Dermal Exposure: In case of skin contact, flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. If concerned, seek immediate medical advice.

Oral Exposure: If Swallowing seek immediate medical advice.

Inhalation Exposure: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If breathing becomes difficult, call a physician.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

Firefighters should wear proper protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus with full piece operated in positive pressure mode to prevent contact with skin and eyes.

Note: Picric acid can explode on contact when dry. Do not allow this material to dry out. Do not let dry picric acid (crystals) form in container or on the cap threads of the container. A severe explosion hazard when shocked or exposed to heat. Dried out picric acid may explode if exposed to heat, flame, friction or shock. May form shock-sensitive mixtures on contact with metals. Can violently decompose at elevated temperatures.

Extinguishing Media: Use water spray, dry chemical powder, or appropriate foam.

Flash Point: CAS#: 88-89-1: Closed cup: 150°C (302°F).

Auto-ignition Temperature: CAS#: 88-89-1: 300°C (572°F)

NFPA Rating: (estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 0; Instability: 0

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

Procedure(s) of Personal Precaution(s): Wear protective gear.

Methods for Cleaning up: Never allow spilled material to dry. Dampen with water without stirring. Never attempt to sweep up dry material. Use a spill response pad or pillow that is dampened with water to absorb the spilled material. Collect the picric acid- containing waste in plastic or glass bottles for disposal. Place the pads/pillows in an appropriate impervious container with water added. Carefully containerize for proper disposal.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Use care when handling. Wash thoroughly after handling. Store capped at room temperature. Keep away from incompatible materials.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits. Personal Protective Equipment Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure. Respirators: A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.

Section 9 - Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical State: Liquid Appearance: Dark Blue-green Odor: No information available Vapor Pressure: No information available Odor threshold: No information available Vapor Density: No information available pH: Approx. 1.4 Relative density: No information available Melting point/freezing point: No information available Solubility: soluble in water Boiling Point: No information available Flash point: No information available Evaporation Rate: No information available Flammability (solid, gas): No information available Partition coefficient: n-octanol/water: No information available Auto-ignition temperature: No information available Decomposition temperature: No information available Viscosity: No information available Specific Gravity/Density: No information available

Section 10 - Stability and Reactivity

Chemical Stability: Stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage. Heat and sunlight can contribute to instability.

Conditions to Avoid: High temperatures, mechanical shock, ignition sources. An mixture results when the aqueous solution crystallizes. Do not let dry picric acid (crystals) form in container or on the cap threads of container. Dry picric acid is explosive! Incompatibilities with Other Materials: Highly reactive with metals, alkalis. Reactive with oxidizing agents, reducing agents. The product may undergo hazardous decomposition, condensation or polymerization, it may react violently with water to emit toxic gases or it may become self reactive under conditions of shock or increase in temperature or pressure. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Carbon monoxide, irritating and toxic fumes and gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, sodium oxides, nitrogen. Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur. Section 11 - Toxicological Information
