LAUNCH OF ‘HEALTHY KITCHEN, HEALTHY WOMEN’ AT FIRST- EVER PEOPLE’S ASSOCIATION WOMEN’S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEES’ HEALTH CARNIVAL IN SUPPORT OF WAR ON DIABETES

About 1,000 residents will participate in the first-ever People’s Association (PA) ‘Women’s Health Carnival – WIN Against Diabetes’ on Sunday, 2 April 2017, 9.00am at Our Tampines Hub organised by the PA Women’s Integration Network (WIN) Council and Women’s Executive Committees (WEC), in support of the War on Diabetes. The WIN Council and WECs hope to inspire and make it easy for women and their families to eat and live healthily by introducing them to simple healthy recipes and cooking classes. The Health Carnival is one of WEC’s key projects as part of its 50th Anniversary this year.

2 The Healthy Recipes - “Healthy Kitchen, Healthy Women”, comprising 50 recipes of different cuisines, were contributed by the WEC members and Grassroots Advisers, including recipes by Minister – “Wellness of Colours - Mixed Vegetables”; PA Women’s Integration Network (WIN) Council Adviser Dr – “Potato Patties” and Dr – “Healthy Kaseri” (Indian Dessert). A convenient postcard size pack has also been produced for the Health Carnival for women to share these healthy recipes with their friends by mail. The WECs worked with the Health Promotion Board to ensure that each of the healthy dishes contained about 500 calories or less.

3 Taking a step further to empower residents to eat healthily, the WECs will conduct Healthy Cooking Classes on these healthy recipes at various 1 community clubs (CCs) islandwide from April 2017 onwards. Families, friends and neighbours can attend these classes together, so that they can bond and motivate one another while learning to prepare the healthy dishes. Residents can also participate in free health assessments and cooking demonstrations by the WEC Cooking Interest Groups at the Health Carnival.

4 The WEC Healthy Recipes and Healthy Cooking Classes will be launched by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr , together with Senior Minister of State and PA WIN Council Adviser Dr Amy Khor, Er. , Grassroots Adviser to Nee Soon GRC Grassroots Organisations (GROs), Ms , Grassroots Adviser to Tampines GRC GROs and Ms , Grassroots Adviser to Fengshan GROs.

5 Senior Minister of State and PA WIN Council Adviser Dr Amy Khor, said, “Being healthy has to start with taking simple steps to eat healthy and exercise regularly as well as go for appropriate health screening. As an individual, it might be difficult to take the first step, so the community can come in to provide the platforms to help individuals make that change. I am happy that the WECs are taking the lead to advocate healthy living and eating in the community by conducting healthy cooking classes at CCs islandwide to encourage our women to prepare healthier meals for their families. WEC Health Champions will also be mobilised to reach out to the community to share diabetes prevention messages and other healthy lifestyle tips. These should help bring about positive change since most women have a significant influence over the dietary and lifestyle habits of their family members.”
