An Autobiography Richard Ryder Devon, England I recoiled at the obvious sufferings of my prey I was chided for being silly. Although it was considered the proper thing to do to kill an animal "cleanly" and to put wounded creatures "out of their misery" swiftly, the basic right of humankind to dominate and tyrannise was not to be challenged. Killing and exploiting animals was something that made a man a man. Yet I never really doubted that we sentients were all alike-and lowe that mainly to my mother. My father, one of the last of the old sort of English squire, owned thousands of acres of willdlife-rich moorland, forestry and farmland, all of which had been Long before I began campaigning against speciesism in the family for generations. Santayana’s Epiphenomenalism Reconsidered 1 Santayana’s Epiphenomenalism Reconsidered Robin Weiss 1 Recently, it has become increasingly common to question the extent to which Santayana’s philosophy of mind can and should be identified as a kind of epiphenomenalism, as has traditionally been the case. Most scholars take Santayana’s epiphenomenalism for granted, and either assert or deny that he gives an argument to support it.1 However, others have questioned whether the evident similarities between Santayana’s own views and those of modern-day epiphenomenalists obscure more significant differences. I will argue that, indeed, Santayana’s views are potentially inaccurately captured by the term “epiphenomenalism.” However, I shall argue that this is true for reasons other than other scholars have given for this view. 2 The issue turns on what Santayana means by a “cause” when he denies that ideas are causes of action. -

Anyone acquainted withWittgenstein's and Santayana's work should be aware of a number of obvious differences between the two philoso phers.While both were praised for their literary style,Wittgenstein's compact aphorisms and Santayana's flowing prose were radically dif ferent, and while Santayana seemed to unapologetically engage in systematic metaphysics, Wittgenstein's philosophy seems both anti systematic and antimetaphysical. Nevertheless, Hodges and Lachs attempt to argue thatwhile Santayana's andWittgenstein's "resources, tools, and strategies are different, the philosophical goals theywish to achieve by means of them are remarkably similar" (93). The opening chapter presents both as responding to the perceived collapse of the "comfortable certainties ofWestern civilization" (xii) that followed the FirstWorld War. The authors contrastWittgenstein's and Santayana's "conservative" and "ironically accepting" reactions to "the twentieth century's painful discovery of contingency" (3) with "Cartesian," "Neitzschean," "Pragmatist," and "Postmodernist" responses to the problem. The second chapter argues that both Santayana andWittgenstein think that"persistent and unallayable doubt shows that something has gone wrong in the intellectual enterprise," and thatwhile skepticism cannot be defeated on its own terms, those terms are irrelevant to the actual processes of inquiry.Consequently, "both reject absolute certainty as the standard of cognition and want to return the criteria of knowledge to the looser practices of ordinary life" (32). -

Forum on Miranda FRICKER’s Epistemic Injustice: Power and the Ethics of Knowing Précis Miranda FRICKER BIBLID [0495-4548 (2008) 23: 61; pp. 69-71] ABSTRACT: This paper summarizes key themes from my Epistemic Injustice: Power and the Ethics of Knowing (OUP, 2007); and it gives replies to commentators. Keywords: credibility, testimony, social understanding, prejudice, epistemic injustice, virtue, virtue epistemology. The overarching aim of Epistemic Injustice is to explore two kinds of dysfunction in our epistemic practices. The first occurs in testimonial transaction, when a speaker re- ceives a deflated degree of credibility from a hearer owing to prejudice on the hearer’s part. Many philosophers debate the question exactly how fundamental testimony is as a source of knowledge, but few would deny that an enormous amount of what we know is, at root, testimonially acquired. Testimony can be spoken or written, or for that matter signed or sung; it can be direct, as when someone tells us face to face what the time is; or indirect, as when we learn about world events from the newspapers. Since so much of what we know depends on one or another sort of testimonial trans- action, it matters whether our habits of attributing credibility are in good order. Clearly it matters from a purely epistemic point of view: if, for instance, a hearer’s pre- judice wrongly deflates her judgement of credibility, then the flow of knowledge is blocked, truths fail to flow from knower to inquirer. But this is not all. The dysfunc- tion of unduly deflated credibility may be not only an epistemic dysfunction, it may also be an ethical dysfunction. -

1 VULNERABILITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS DON KULICK Fall Term 2018 Fridays 10-12 pm Vulnerability and human rights are intimately intertwined. Human rights advocates argue that rights must be extended to vulnerable populations, but what does vulnerability actually signify and entail? The idea of vulnerability is currently undergoing re-evaluation in philosophy, the social sciences and the humanities. From having been perceived as a condition from which subjects should be defended, rescued or liberated, vulnerability and passivity have increasingly come to be theorized as a position and experience that confronts us with the limits of understanding, empathy, ethics and theory. This course will discuss work that attempts to engage with vulnerability as a challenge that can guide us towards new ways of thinking about and engaging with the world. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Active class participation and presentations. Throughout the course, you will be asked at various points to prepare introductions to the literature. The point of these introductions, which must last no longer than 5 minutes, is to quickly summarize the material and open the discussion to topics that you feel merit attention. These presentations will form part of your final grade. 2. A total of four critical/reaction papers posted on the course site. You may choose whichever four weeks you like. The papers should be about one page in length, at 16 pt. line spacing, Times New Roman font. They may deal with any questions the readings raise for you, such as queries or criticisms you have of the authors' method or argument; connections to other readings; disparities among the readings; implications of the readings for important issues in anthropology or ethnography, and the like. -

My email: [email protected] This course considers some philosophical arguments concerning the justification of the claim that under modern conditions, the political order of a society ought to be democratic. Next question: how democratic ought the political order to be, and what determines the normatively appropriate degree of democracy in particular circumstances. Following David Estlund, let us say a state is legitimate if it issues commands (laws, public policies) and enforces them and does so permissibly, and a state has authority if it has the moral power to issue commands (laws, public policies) to its subjects and thereby to bring it about that those commanded have some moral obligation to comply. Under modern conditions, must a state be democratic in order to rule legitimately and with authority?
