The Knights opened the 2016-17 NEC slate 8-1 and appeared destined for the top seed in this year's tournament, how- ever, the tables turned as the team went 1-8 in the second half of the conference season. The Knights now enter this year's tournament as the No. 6 six seed but remain unfettered as they have been in this position before. Last season, the team was picked ninth by the NEC Preseason Poll and defied odds to capture the crown. They are hoping this season, history will repeat itself as the Knights rally to the top. Awaiting FDU is a quarterfinal test against the team that they defeated in last season's NEC Championship Game -- in the building where it happened. The Knights have won three straight games at Spiro Sports Center and head coach Greg Herenda has enjoyed success with a 3-1 record in the conference tourney. The team's starting backcourt of Darian Anderson and Stephan Jiggetts were named All-NEC Second Team and Third team, respectively, and will need to continue their stellar play for the Knights to succeed. Anderson led the NEC in steals per game but he's been the key to the FDU offense, leading the team in scoring 15 different times. Jiggetts led the NEC in assists for most of the season but the junior guard has assumed more of a scoring role this season by necessity. With several key Knights' hampered by injuries through- out the year, Jiggetts is averaging career-highs across the board and has been a key cog throughout the season. His ability to get the free throw line has provided the team a huge lift as he has made 146 trips to the charity stripe and converted at a 81.5 percent rate. Sophomore guard Darnell Edge has provided a spark for the Knights this season. He spent much of the year providing that lift off of the bench, but since his insertion into the starting lineup, he has scored in double figures in seven of the team's last eight games and been especially efficient. The sophomore guard is shooting 52.2 percent overall but 57.1 percent in conference games. He is also at 90.4 percent from the free throw line, which has aided the Knights in their top 20 national ranking at the line. Fellow sophomore Mike Holloway has shouldered the load in the post for the Knights all season long. Holloway has started all 29 games and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game and is the fourth Knight averaging double figures in points at 11.4 per outing. After missing some of the season due to injury, the NEC's 2016 Most Improved Player and Tournament MVP Earl Potts Jr. is back in the fold and regaining his shooting stroke. Potts Jr. has led the team in scoring twice of the last six games with 21-point efforts. The third-year swingman is averaging 12.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 15 NEC games this season.
