TEAM NOTES:

ROAD WARRIORS The Penguins lost their first game away from PPG Paints Arena last night in Florida, and now have a record of 2-1-0 on the road this season. Pittsburgh has scored 16 goals through its first three road games which is tied for the second-most goals through their first three road contests in franchise history. The only season that the Penguins lit the lamp more in their first three road tilts was the 2006- 07 season (18 goals). Penguins also scored 16 goals in the first three games of the 1999-00 season.

LETANG ENJOYING PRODUCTIVE OCTOBER Even though the Penguins still have three more games left this month, defenseman Kris Letang is enjoying one of the best starts to the season of his career. Letang has had at least one point in all but three of Pittsburgh’s games thus far, while his four goals and 10 points (4G-6A) rank tied for second and fourth in the NHL among defensemen respectively. Below is a look at the most productive Octobers in Letang’s career:

Month GP G A PTS Oct. 2018 9 4 7 11 Oct. 2011 11 1 10 11 Oct. 2010 12 3 8 11 Oct. 2019 10 4 6 10 Oct. 2017 13 1 7 8 Oct. 2014 9 1 5 6

With two more points, Letang can establish a new career high for points in the month of October. His 12 points would be the sixth-most by a Pittsburgh blueliner in October, tying who recorded 12 points (5G-7A) in October 2009, and Larry Murphy who had 12 points (3G-9A) in October 1992.

UN-SCREWING THE JAR(RY) Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry looks to make his third start of the 2019-20 campaign after Matt Murray tended the net in last night’s game against the Panthers. Jarry has been exceptional in his first two starts, allowing just three goals through both games total (1-1-0 record). He is first in the NHL with a 1.52 goals-against average and is tied for eighth with a .941 save percentage (min. 2 starts).

Jarry has faced the Lightning once before in his career, stopping 33 of 35 shots (.943 SV%) in a 5-2 Penguins win on November 25, 2017.

JAKE-ING IT ON THE ROAD Penguins forward Jake Guentzel notched two assists against the Panthers last night, giving him points in all three road games this season (3G-2A). Dating back to last year, Guentzel has points in four-consecutive road contests (3G-3A-6PTS). In only three road games this season, the forward has as many points (5) as he does in seven home games. During his 82-game campaign last year, Guentzel’s splits were nearly even as he recorded 19 of his 40 goals on the road, had 18 assists both at home and on the road, and only recorded two more points in Pittsburgh (39) than on the road (37).

Additionally, through 10 games this season, Guentzel has points in eight of them (5G-5A) and is tied for the team lead in goals (5).

DEFENSE FIRST Through the first 10 games of the season, the Penguins are averaging 28.5 shots against per game, the third-fewest average in the NHL. As a result, Pittsburgh has limited the goals they’ve given up as well. Of their 10 games this season, they have allowed two or fewer goals five times, and three or fewer goals in seven of the 10 games. Their 2.70 goals against per game ranks 10th in the NHL.
