SCHOLARSHIP & BURSARY INFORMATION

BRACEBRIDGE & MUSKOKA LAKES SECONDARY SCHOOL

FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION

Now that you have made plans to continue your education after you finish secondary school, perhaps you are wondering how much further education will cost, and how you will pay for it.

As in any large, long term investment, the key to success is careful planning. You cannot resolve all the problems three or four years in advance, but you need to be aware of the costs and possible sources of money. You need not postpone or forego your education due to lack of money. Remember that a large percentage of students who attend university or college receive government assistance. Graduates of BMLSS may also receive support from several local bursary funds. Please take the time to fill out the applications accurately. The investment in your future may be the most important investment you will make in your lifetime.

STUDENTS ARE ADVISED TO CHECK EACH WEBSITE FOR CURRENT DATES

Should you receive a bursary or scholarship refer to the Department of National Revenue information pamphlet “Students and Income Tax” when filling out your Income Tax Return.

Here are some suggestions to assist you in planning:

I. ESTIMATED COSTS (APPROXIMATE) Tuition, books, supplies, transportation, housing, food, etc. College……………… $14,000.00 - $18,000.00 University………….. $15,000.00 - $20,000.00

II. USUAL SOURCE OF FUNDS

 Your own earnings and savings from part-time and summer employment  Assistance from family  Scholarships and awards (for high achievement)  Loans (must be repaid eventually)  Bursaries and grants (no need to repay these ever)

lll. LOANS

Emergency Loans Many colleges and universities have emergency loan funds to provide money to students who run short of funds during the year. Contact the Financial Aid person at the institution that you will be attending.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) (http://osap.gov.on.ca ) OSAP is intended to help students who need money for post-secondary education. High marks are not the qualification. OSAP funds supplement, but do not replace a student's own financial resources and those of his/her family. Pamphlets will be available for students with special needs issues, such as Sole Support Students, Loan repayment, students with disabilities and students studying out of province or at a private post-secondary institution. OSAP forms are available on line at the end of April. During the application process you will be asked for a password – please write this down as you will need it to access your files with this password every time you apply for OSAP. Processing time is approximately six weeks.

Many chartered banks offer current interest loans, with deferred pay-back plans. These are guaranteed by the Canadian and provincial governments.

IV. SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS

College and University Scholarships and Awards Many community colleges and universities have entrance scholarships available. The scholarship information is available in the individual university/college books. Go over them carefully.
