Saints Alive! Fr. Ray’s favorite this week… Feb 11: St Evagrius Ponticus (345-399) is a super spiritual writer from Asia Minor who was friends with all the Cappadocian fathers; he gave us a clear description of acedia – the noon-day devil – a disgust for spiritual things. But wait! What about St. Pascal I Pope (824)? He’s the one who found the incorrupt body of St. Cecilia when he fell asleep during prayer at St. Peter’s and dreamed aright how to find her! Lifetime portraits in mosaic tile can be found of him in two Roman churches: S. Maria in Domnica and Santa Prassede. Feb 13: Bd. Jordan of Saxony (1177- 1237). The German second-in-command of the Dominican Order, provided significant material on St. Dominic but has also left detailed insight into his personality through a series of letters written to Bd. Diana d’Andalo (whose relics we venerate in Bologna). Feb 14: St. Cyril (827-869) and St. Methodius (815-884 ). These brothers are venerated as the apostles to the southern Slavic peoples. They created the Slavonic language and alphabet for the purpose of worship. St. Cyril died this day in 869 and is buried in the church of San Clemente (since he discovered the relics of Saint Clement, pope.) When in Rome, pray before the tombs of Cyril, especially if Slavic blood flows through your veins! Feb 15: St. Claude La Colombière (1641-1682). A gracious and kindly Jesuit who spent years preaching in my beloved second home in Avignon, but whose life was transformed by the conversations with his spiritual directee in Paray le Monial, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. We have the devotion to the Sacred Heart today, because he believed her . He was almost martyred in London. His time in jail destroyed his health: he died at 41 years of age. Feb 17: 7 Founders of the Servite Order (13 th century) were a great group of men from Florence who were bound together out of love for Mary, under the title of Our Lady of the 7 Sorrows. But what about the martyr St. Francis Régis Clet (1748- 1820)? A Lazarist priest from Grenoble who worked for 30 years in the interior of China in Wuchang, in the province of Hupeh. He was tortured and slowly strangled to death at the age of 72. I was given his relic which I will always expose for veneration on this day. EDUCATION SERVICE
