LEHIGH 0 3 0 7 10 Suffocating Defensive Play Powers Bucknell Football Past Lehigh, 20-10 A suffocating defensive performance propelled the Bucknell football team to a 20-10 victory over rival BUCKNELL 0 10 7 3 20 Lehigh on a frigid Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Bolstered by seven sacks for a loss of 52 yards, the Bison held the Mountain Hawks to -6 rushing yards in Nov. 9, 2019 >> Lewisburg, Pa. >> Mathewson-Memorial Stadium >> 1 p.m. >> Attendance: 2,051 a full 60 minutes of action. Six different Bison posted a sack, with Simeon Page registering two for a loss of 14 yards to go along with his six solo tackles and three quarterback hurries. Bucknell’s linebackers paved the way defensively throughout the game. Beyond Page, Rick Mottram reached the double digits in tackles for the second-straight game, logging a team-best 10, while Gerrit Van Itallie filled the stat sheet with six tackles, 2.5 of which went for a loss, and a fumble recovery that halted Lehigh’s final drive of the game. Offensively, Logan Bitikofer threw touchdown passes to Stefone Moore-Green and John McGuire to help head coach Dave Cecchini earn his first home win over his alma mater. In addition, Tyler Keiser, a senior walk- on who graduated from nearby Southern Columbia High School, booted the first two field goals of his career. “The bottom line is, when our guys needed to make a play, they made the play time and time again,” Cec- chini said. “That made the difference. Hopefully, this win will help us gain a little bit of confidence so we can be able to make plays over the last two weeks of the season.” At halftime, the Bison (2-7, 2-2 PL) held a 10-3 lead over the Mountain Hawks (4-5, 3-2 PL), who entered the game second in the Patriot League standings. They opened the scoring at the second quarter’s 11:45 mark on a 20-yard Keiser field goal; Keiser’s first career field goal capped a 13-play, 50-yard drive that saw Jared Cooper run for 31 yards on four carries. On a 3rd and 6 at the Lehigh 26, Bitikofer kept the drive alive by scrambling for an eight-yard gain. Bucknell extended its advantage to 10-0 with 4:23 on the clock in the second frame. Moore-Green’s first career touchdown, a 24-yard grab down the visiting sideline, put an exclamation mark an explosive six-play, 73-yard drive. During that drive, Bitikofer completed three passes of at least 10 yards and ran for a 10-yard gain the play before his touchdown throw to Moore-Green. Despite taking the field for the first time in 490 days, the Bison (1-0, 1-0 PL South) showed few signs Mar. 27 >> Lewisburg, Pa. >> Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium >> 4 p.m. >> Attendance: 1,126 of rust. After allowing the Leopards (1-1, 0-1 PL South) to score on their first drive of the game, they piled up 38 unanswered points. Logan Bitikofer and Tarrin Earle tossed two touchdown passes apiece, with each also throwing for over 140 yards. Defensively, Bucknell limited the 2019 Patriot League runners-up to 284 yards of total offense, in- cluding only 15 on the ground. Four different Bison intercepted a pass, with freshman Blake Leake returning his first career interception 41 yards for a touchdown to put an exclamation mark on his team’s commanding victory late in the fourth quarter. Sanders’s career-high 179 yards came on 12 receptions, two shy of the school record he set against Holy Cross in 2019. His 179 yards stands seventh in school history and is 57 higher than his previous career-best total set against the Crusaders. Alex Twiford (52) and Dominic Lyles (51) rounded out Bucknell’s top three in receiving yards, each also catching a touchdown pass. Bitikofer completed 14 of 22 passes for 183 yards while Earle went 11 for 13 for 145 yards and added a team-best 25 yards on seven carries. Notably, the Bison offensive line ceded just a single sack over the course of the contest. Defensively, six players tied for the Bucknell lead with four tackles, with Ryan Brida’s all being solo. Seven different Bison registered at least one tackle for a loss, with Simeon Page and Gerrit Van Itallie’s coming on sacks. In his first collegiate start, freshman Mike Bright Jr. tied Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Malik Hamm for the game high with 1.5 tackles for a loss. Beyond Leake, seniors Page, Brandon Benson and Conner Romango each picked off a pass. Buck- nell scored on its possessions following Benson and Page’s interceptions, both of which came in the third quarter. Less than two minutes into the game, Lafayette found the end zone. After converting on a 3rd and 2, Cole Northrup found a wide-open Julius Young for a 61-yard touchdown. The Leopards’ extra-point bid went wide, keeping the score at 6-0. The rest of the half, the Bison didn’t allow Lafayette to advance further than its own 41-yard line.
