Thank you, Dave and team! Dear Michael and Dave, I wanted you to know that yesterday members of my team asked Erin Murray me whether the high school league gives out a sportsmanship award. Orono Special Education Teacher and Girls Soccer Coach I thought they were asking for themselves but instead they went on and on about the sportsmanship of the Holy Angels soccer team. Here are just a couple of stories they shared: First, when our player Anna went down with an injury in our semifinal game, the first player who ran to her side was Holy Angels goalkeeper Rachel Kawiecki who stayed with Anna to support her until the coach got there. Second, after beating Holy Angels, as we were walking out of the locker room and the Stars team was exiting in front of us, I motioned for our team to give them space, (knowing the feeling of seeing the team that just beat you after a tough defeat). Well, I was wrong. The Holy Angels team turned around and Rachel, AHA’s goaltender came up to me, and asked who scored the final on me? I replied, “Nora.” Rachel then asked where she was. I hesitated, not knowing where this was going! I then pointed to Nora. Rachel went up to Nora and told her what great goals she had scored and continued to compliment her play. She then walked with the team, wishing us all luck and letting us know they would be rooting for us. Finally, parents, Chair, Board of Trustees alumni and friends alike all understand that the school’s needs go well beyond annual tuition revenue. Thousands have found the joy in being a part of something bigger than oneself — of ensuring that Holy Angels will continue to live out its mission for years to come: to educate and nurture a diverse student population so that each student, as a whole person, may achieve full potential to excel intellectually, to live spiritually, to lead responsibly, to act justly, and to serve selflessly. My wife, Colleen, and I were proud to serve as co-chairs of the Our Call: To Lead & Serve campaign, along with Joe ’83 and Beth Meyer, and honorary chairs Mary Jo Feltl and Fr. Mike Tix. We owe them our thanks for a job well done. While our recent campaign was indeed transformative, our work as a community dedicated to the support and promotion of Holy Angels is not over.

FALL 2019 COMMUNIQUÉ 3 AROUND THE CAMPUS | World Language Global Citizens Heidi J. Foley, principal We are proud to say that the Holy Angels student body is more culturally diverse than ever before. Our students are from nearby cities such as Richfield, Minneapolis, Bloomington and Edina while others are from far off places such as China, Vietnam, Korea and Japan. Some of our students’ families have been in the Twin Cities area for multiple generations while some are first-generation students born in the US but whose families have migrated from Mexico or Ecuador. All of these students’ lives and experiences manifest themselves in their cultures, customs and in their languages. At Holy Angels we embrace and celebrate the rich diversity of our students. We also believe that being bilingual or multilingual is not only a way to celebrate our diversity but is a valuable skill and talent. Strong World Language programs teach students to open their minds and hearts to the world’s culture through the challenge and enjoyment of learning their languages and customs. Each world language course taught at AHA is rigorous and students are asked to work hard to achieve our high standards. Under the direction of world language teachers Sarah Wicklund and Caroline Grabow, and as a way to recognize and reward multilingual proficiency, AHA now offers the Minnesota Gold and Platinum Bilingual and Multilingual Seals and World Language Proficiency Certificates. In 2015-16, the first year offered, seven students earned a seal or certificate. Test results from the spring of 2019 show that the number increased to 27! This is the largest number of students since the program began. Bilingual and multilingual seals and certificates recognize students who demonstrate Intermediate through Advanced Proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking in a language or languages other than English based on American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency guidelines. Students must also satisfactorily complete all required English language arts credits and demonstrate mastery of Minnesota’s English language proficiency standards. AHA students have earned language seals and certificates in Spanish, German and Chinese to date. Students earn certification via Advanced Placement Exams or state-approved online testing protocols. Now, more than ever, AHA students are poised to earn up to an additional 3-4 college, semester credits in world language through Minnesota State Tommy McCoy ’17 and Colleges and Universities. These credits can be counted with, or in addition Mary Kate Eiden ’17 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to, AP or PACC credits. September 2019

“The Spanish classes at AHA allowed me to apply the grammar and vocabulary that I learned into real world applications. It helped tremendously to watch films, read books and poetry, and attend plays. Spanish V was a special class because our language learning turned into a deeper appreciation of culture and of peoples. Spanish classes at Holy Angels prepared me for my experience in Argentina because I was not only able to communicate in everyday conversations, but I recognized traditional dances at an event, I understood a contemporary Argentinean film, and was able to navigate through the large city of Buenos Aires. Being able to speak and write in Spanish is also very applicable to my career field of interest, healthcare. Knowing a world language helps a medical professional be more sensitive and empathetic to people from other cultures. – Mary Kate Eiden ’17

“ I love the fact that our students are able to be recognized for their hard work, achievement and for their bilingual skills. This is an often overlooked skill set that makes our students well prepared for the best colleges and the world beyond. The prospect of going abroad to work was initially incredibly daunting, but it was made a lot easier knowing I was going somewhere where I had a strong language base and could go in knowing I’d be able to connect with my coworkers and neighbors in their native language. Recently, the Stars have achieved two consecutive 15-0-1 regular seasons, putting Coach See’s program among the most dominant in the state. Last year, AHA claimed their first section title since the fall of 2001 after a 17-year section title drought. After losing in the State Semifinal in 2018, it took dedication and pure industry from the players to secure another opportunity at the state championship this year. “We couldn’t be more proud of our players for their achievements this season — on the surface, people don’t see the amount of time, sacrifice, and culture- driven support these guys have put into this over the last 12 The Blake goalie months.” See said of his team. “We pride ourselves on three was just inches pillars of AHA Soccer: Support, Industry, and Discipline — these away from kids internalized these characteristics in how they prepare for deflecting the contests, play contests, and hold themselves off the soccer field. state championship As an alum, I’m so proud of their accomplishment. It is a moment few AHA fans will ever forget. Holy Angels built a 2-0 lead on a first-half goal from Porter Ball and another goal early in the second half from 2019 ‘Mr. Soccer’ Conor O’Rourke, the first ‘Mr. Soccer’ in AHA Soccer history. With just 10 minutes to play in regulation it appeared that the victory was well in hand. However, the second-seeded Bears erased the 2-0 in what seemed like a blink of an eye when they scored on a kick and added another goal just three minutes later forcing overtime.

FALL 2019 COMMUNIQUÉ 9 NEWS FOR ALUMS One Goal: To Be of Service Featuring John Patterson ’99 and his career dedicated to global service

When John Patterson approached his graduation from Academy of Holy Angels in 1999, he knew one thing for sure: he wanted a career in which he could be of service. During his senior year, he decided to follow in his family’s footsteps by applying to the Naval Academy. “It was the best way my 18-year-old self could think to do that, no doubt influenced by the fact that both my father and grandfather had also chosen to embark on a life of service at the very same institution,“ John recalls. “I was drawn to a place that talked not of career trajectory and entry-level salaries, but of duty, commitment and dedication to things bigger than the self. As a young adult, these were vague but compelling notions.” John served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy from 2004 to 2011. When he returned home, John sought a change in his career and looked for new ways to serve. It was during that transition period that John entered the Master of Arts in Peace and Justice Program at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies (Kroc School). Of the career change, John says, “My peacebuilding education is not what you might call typical: I graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2004, and I graduated from the Kroc School in 2013. To some, that combination might seem somewhat dissonant if not outright incompatible. But when I look back on how and why I choose those two institutions, the combination seems obvious to me, perhaps even inevitable.” The mission of the Kroc School, a division of the University of San Diego, is to prepare students to develop solutions to today’s complex issues of violence, injustice, poverty and Above, John inequality. It was that mission and the idea of working for change in the world that John Patterson’s 1999 found most powerful. John says, “As firmly as I believed in the Kroc School’s vision to develop AHA graduation communities worldwide where people thrive, and where there is justice, equality and opportunity photo. for all, I knew the world to be a harsh place where peaceful thoughts and intentions were not going to be enough to effect real change. So I focused my studies on economics, I learned how to decipher regression analysis studies, and I did my best to master statistics software programs — no small feat for an English major undergrad. The 17 months I spent at the Kroc School fundamentally changed the course of my life. It now colors nearly every decision I make as I try to live up to the calling to be an agent of change, a voice for justice, a maker of peace.” Upon graduation, John accepted a job with the USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), which leads the U.S. government’s response to international disasters. In 2013, he was sent on his first Assessing earthquake damage in disaster response to the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. There, he advised an aircraft carrier group who was supporting the humanitarian response effort. It was on that assignment that John said he “realized that the greatest value of what I learned was

Since that first mission six years ago, John has continued to work at OFDA and focuses on humanitarian efforts around the globe, including serving on response teams for multiple hurricanes, earthquakes, conflicts and health emergencies. He led OFDA’s response to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, managing over $23 million in humanitarian programs providing health, livelihood, shelter, and nutrition assistance to Venezuelans, Colombian returnees and host communities. Now, John resides in Budapest, Hungary and leads outreach efforts focusing on Eastern Europe, Central and Israel/West Bank

Gaza. Of his career dedicated to global peacemaking and service, John reflects, “I think the great value of a Catholic education is that it instilled in me a deep sense of social justice. Not social justice as some utopian ideal but as a concrete task that is set before all of us — to do our part to make things better. And not just better for the people who look like us or think like us or pray like us — but all of us doing what we can, through small kindnesses and ambitious social changes, to make the world a more just and peaceful place. FALL 2019 COMMUNIQUÉ 13 2018 – 2019 Annual Report Summary

Dear Friends of Holy Angels, Once again I begin this Annual Report with a keen sense of pride about our school, our students, our faculty and staff along with the thousands of supporters who made 2018-19 the most monumental year in our School’s storied past. As I look back over the past few years it is remarkable how much we have accomplished not only in terms of student achievement in and out of the classroom but also in our steadfast attention to the business of education, the operation of this institution and the management of its resources. They led by example in an unselfish and professional way. Additionally I would be remiss if special mention was not paid to the members of our Board of Trustees during 2018-19 who Thomas E. Shipley had the vision and foresight to approve a major campaign President and to direct its progress. Under the leadership of Chair John Schutz, the board played a vital role in not only stewarding AHA on its mission but shepherding each and every component of the funding effort. As I said from campaign inception, an Campaign success, by the numbers: “All Hands on Deck” approach was necessary to ensure each initiative was met. Donors by graduating class Patricia Linnihan Florence Deaner Pamela Melony Manteufel The We are Holy Angels! Alumni Challenge is an initiative spearheaded by AHA alums Sr. Mary Ann McGivern Karen Holman DeVries Kathleen Tait Martin to promote generosity among the greater alumni association. During the 2018-19 Barbara Wudke Moore Roberta Ramstack Dircks Alice Juettner McCormick school year, over 60 alums banded together to support AHA and specifically the Kathleen Marcella O’Brien Janet Feany Ellingsberg Judith A. Mosiniak comprehensive campaign. They reached out to fellow alums asking them to give by Kathleen McDonell Penterman Rita Fox Deanne Gantzer Nelson writing letters, making phone calls and hosting parties. The overall response by alumni Barbara Bartsh Peterson Mary Catherine Walker Gale Patricia Harte Nolan was overwhelming as we saw a 28% increase in the number of alumni donors over the Frances Fadell Serpe Susan Graceman Paulette Langer Orf previous year. Thank you! Barbara Fairfield Spinner Sr. Susan Hames, CSJ Mary Bird Orfield Linda Fadell Stubbs Kathleen Conboy Holzer Kathleen Cooper Pierson The success of “the challenge” played a key role in helping the school achieve its Joanne Tromiczak-Neid Donna Johnson Susanne Price Lois Johnson Mary Spack Roberts campaign goal in September of 2019. Now, as we embark on this new school year our CLASS OF 1960 Sue Johnson Mary H. Siegfried hope and prayer is that our alumni will continue to answer the call to help us grow and Peg Tait Aguirre Collette Brouette Kern Judi Bregel Small thrive so that even more students can attend Holy Angels. We have set another Mrs. Janice L. Buechler Patricia Doucet Klass Mary Davy Swanson ambitious goal of 1350 alumni donors for 2019-20. We gratefully ask for your support.
