Businesses in Palermo, Sicily, are refusing to give into mafia intimidation, and are fighting back publicly.

106 shops in total have joined together to offer mob-free shopping. In the tradition of Libero Grassi, an anti-mafia activist gunned down in 1991, the companies refuse to hand over a monthly tax to the Cosa Nostra, a Sicilian mob. Eighty percent of businesses currently give in to the mafia intimidation and pay a monthly tax, or “pizzo,” which equaled an estimated $33.5 billion dollars in fiscal 2004.

Consumers are supporting the stance, and over 7000 have signed, promising only to shop at one of the 106 shops dedicated to make their stand. The list of vendors includes pubs, grocery stores and travel agencies.

If your Italian is good, you can view a list of the participating vendors on the Addiopizzo Committee’s website – addiopizzo.org. Addiopizzo means “goodbye pizzo.” This year is especially important in the fight against the Sicilian mob. 2006 marks the 15 year anniversary of the murder of Libero Grassi, who was gunned down for making a stand against the mafia. The Addiopizzo Committee was formed about two and a half years ago by a group of students, who were just children when Libero Grassi was murdered. Since then, the Sicilian people have banded together to fight corruption. The recent capture of one of the Cosa Nostra’s most infamous bosses, Bernardo Provenzano, has also fueled hope into the campaign of Sicilians fed up with the current state of mob activity.
