Profile A successful librarian, technologist, and innovator with over a decade in the library field and nearly 20 years of Web experience along with a deep understanding of the current landscape of libraries, social media, mobile, and emerging technologies. I am the Director of Information Technology at The New York Law Institute as well as an award-winning editor and author of 35 books including Law Librarianship in the Digital Age for which I won the AALL’s 2014 Joseph L. Andrews Legal Literature Award. I’m an adjunct faculty member at Pratt Institute, and an international conference speaker. I speak at several conferences a year, mainly about new tech trends, digital strategy, and libraries.

Andrews Legal Literature Award awarded by The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) for Law Librarianship in the Digital Age.  Winner of the 2014 Emerging Leader Award from the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section (PLL-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL).  Winner of the 2011 Greenwood Publishing Group Award for the Best Book in Library Literature awarded by The American Library Association (ALA) for The Tech Set.

Professional Experience

Director of Information Technology 12/11 – Present The New York Law Institute, New York, NY  Management: Manage IT and Technical Services departments.  Budgets: Manage a $400k departmental budget and consult on $1.5m organizational budget.  Project Management: Manage outsourced IT services as well as third-party developers on projects such as: o Development of a “seamless catalog module” offering integration between multiple library OPACs. o Development of SharePoint Web Parts and HTML widgets. o Development of scripts for leading ERM systems including OneLog, ResearchMonitor, and Lookup Precision. o Development of a custom federated search application combining disparate subscription services into one search results interface.

o Network upgrade/re-wiring of physical library space to expand our network.  Technology Initiatives: Responsible for leading all IT initiatives and strategy including: o Redesigned the library website. . New website site structure based on analysis of site analytics, heuristic evaluation, online and in-person usability studies, and departmental requirements. o Implemented a successful eBooks initiative offering member access to 87,000 eBooks. o Introduced many free and low-cost alternatives to existing technology, saving thousands of dollars annually, as well as implemented applications not previously used at NYLI such as: . Established an Electronic Resources Management (ERM) system in the library using OSS. . Created a library statistics database with reporting functionality. . Established an intranet for library staff. o Cloud migration of services formerly hosted in-house for increased accessibility. o Developed a disaster recovery/business continuity plan.  License/Contract Negotiation: Negotiate content and license agreements for electronic resources, subscriptions, and software.  Marketing: Speak at industry conferences and events, visit potential members, design ads, issue all press releases, conduct member surveys, and social media marketing. Organized an Augmented Reality rare books exhibit.  Training: Train staff and educate members on how to use our software and services including developing training videos, hosting instructional webinars, and classes, and creating technical documentation.

Consulting Acquisitions/Developmental Editor 8/12 - Present Rowman & Littlefield Publishers/Scarecrow Press  Project Management: Responsible for concept, planning, author acquisition, project management, and developmental editing, of technology books and book series.  Management: Manage between 14-35 high profile authors through all aspects of the book writing and publishing process from proposal to editorial to promotion.  The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) awarded Law Librarianship in the Digital Age the 2014 Joseph L. Andrews Legal Literature Award.

Adjunct Faculty Pratt Institute SILS, New York, NY 6/08 – Present San Jose State University, San Jose, CA 10/07 – 2010 Long Island University, New York, NY 9/07 – 2010  Teach Web technology, Open Source, and Basic Reference courses to graduate students enrolled in Library and Information Science programs in both classroom and online learning environments.  Created private social networks for students to participate in using Drupal technology as well as maintain class websites in course management programs.

 Filmed and edited video lectures using green-screen technique as well as instructional screencasts.  Created and helped students publish a peer-reviewed open-access journal using OJS.  Served on the Technology Program Advisory Committee at San Jose State University.

Blogger 8/07 – 11/14 iLibrarian, http://oedb.org/blogs/ilibrarian  Authored a daily blog with over 100,000 unique visitors per month. Topics included mobile and emerging technologies as they pertain to the library field.  Audience development through multi-channel marketing such as social media, traffic analysis, and networking, etc.  Tracked conversations and sentiment to ensure the iLibrarian brand had a positive presence wherever people had conversations.

Consulting Acquisitions/Developmental Editor – The Tech Set I & II 8/08 – 2013 Neal-Schuman Publishers/American Library Association  Project Management: Responsible for concept, planning, author acquisition, project management, developmental editing, and marketing of an award-winning set of 10 technology books aimed at libraries.  Management: Manage 10-12 high profile authors through all aspects of the book writing and publishing process from proposal to editorial to promotion.  The American Library Association (ALA) awarded The Tech Set the 2011 Greenwood Publishing Group Award for the Best Book in Library Literature.

Emerging Technologies and Web Services Librarian 10/09 – 11/11 Barnard College Library, New York, NY  Technology Initiatives: Responsible for the application and use of new and emerging technologies both internally and to the public services function. o Led the Library through a Web site redesign and migration to a Drupal content management system, combining multiple sites into one unified Web presence. . Developed taxonomies, menus, & site structures based on analysis of site analytics, usability studies, and departmental requirements. Created wireframes, site maps, page mockups, and site audits. . Chaired committee to ensure inter-departmental input into redesign and to prepare content for migration. o Collaborated with Columbia University Libraries to introduce a new text reference service and a more robust IM reference tool to Barnard Library. o Established a social media presence across multiple channels to enhance visibility and connect with the Barnard community. o Developed strategic plans for social media, and other technology initiatives as well as analytics-based assessment. o Created a private Intranet for Library staff, interns, and student workers. o Created a Reference Statistics database collect more information about reference interactions in an efficient manner. o Created a strategy for a library-wide digitization initiative

 Bibliographic Instruction and Staff Training: o Designed and delivered bibliographic instruction curriculum and research guides for multiple English literature and History seminars as well as technology topics. o Responsible for staff training on how to edit and administer the Drupal CMS. o Created a series of 10 instructional webcasts & a library video tour.  Management: Head of the Barnard Library Internship Program which included recruiting, scheduling, training, mentoring, and managing 8-10 graduate LIS interns.  Public Services: Provided reference services for the library’s 300,000 volume collection, 1,700+ electronic databases, and 10 million volume university-wide library collection including one-on-one research consultations, phone, email, IM, and text reference. Reference Librarian 3/05 – 3/08 , Columbia University, New York, NY  Public Services: Provided reference services for Butler Library's 50,000 volume reference collection, 1,700+ electronic databases, and 10 million volume university library collection.  Technology Initiatives: o Created an interactive map for the Library’s reference collection which allowed patrons to click on virtual stacks to view contents as well as search for items. o Creating and updated library web pages using the Web CMS. o Created an internal blog for the Reference department staff. o Created a Butler Stacks Guide podcast. o Founded a monthly Emerging Tech Brown Bag series.  Training: Created technical documentation, user guides, instruction scripts, and handouts.
