Wally Pursell (who wrote the original and changed by-laws) and I worked last year on getting the By-Laws updated to the current BRAS policies, and we hope the revised By-Laws will need no revisions for a long time. We need more Globe at Night observations – we are behind in the observations compared to last year at this time. We also need observations of variable stars to help in a school project by a new BRAS member, Shreya. -

Ionic Emissions in Comet C/2016 R2 (Pan-STARRS)

Shashikiran Ganesh1 and Kiran S.Baliyan1 1 Astronomy & Astrophysics Division, Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, India. 2 Department of Physics, Leach Science Center, Auburn University, Auburn, AL, USA. 23 April 2020 ABSTRACT We carried out observations of a peculiar comet, C/2016 R2 (Pan-STARRS), using a low resolution spectrograph mounted on the 1.2m telescope at Mount Abu Infrared Observatory, India. The comet was observed on two dates in January 2018, when it was at a heliocentric distance of 2.8 AU. Study based on our observations revealed that the optical spectrum of this comet is quite unusual as compared to general cometary spectra. Most of the major cometary emissions like C2,C3 and CN were absent in comet C/2016 R2. However, the comet spectrum + + showed very strong emission bands from ionic species like CO and N2 . A mean N2/CO ratio of 0.09 ± 0.02 was derived from the spectra and an extremely low depletion factor of 1.6 ± 0.4 has been estimated for this ratio as compared to the solar nebula. We have also detected minor + + emission features beyond 5400 Å, albeit marginally. The column densities of CO and N2 were calculated from their emission bands. The optical spectrum suggests that the cometary ice is dominated by CO. The low depletion factor of N2/CO ratio in this comet, as compared to the solar nebula and the unusual spectrum of the comet are consequences of distinctive processing at the location of its formation in the early solar nebula. -
Project Pan-STARRS and the Outer Solar System
Project Pan-STARRS and the Outer Solar System David Jewitt Institute for Astronomy, 2680 Woodlawn Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822 ABSTRACT Pan-STARRS, a funded project to repeatedly survey the entire visible sky to faint limiting magnitudes (mR ∼ 24), will have a substantial impact on the study of the Kuiper Belt and outer solar system. We briefly review the Pan- STARRS design philosophy and sketch some of the planetary science areas in which we expect this facility to make its mark. Pan-STARRS will find ∼20,000 Kuiper Belt Objects within the first year of operation and will obtain accurate astrometry for all of them on a weekly or faster cycle. We expect that it will revolutionise our knowledge of the contents and dynamical structure of the outer solar system. Subject headings: Surveys, Kuiper Belt, comets 1. Introduction to Pan-STARRS Project Pan-STARRS (short for Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response Sys- tem) is a collaboration between the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy, the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Maui High Performance Computer Center, and Science Ap- plications International Corporation. The Principal Investigator for the project, for which funding started in the fall of 2002, is Nick Kaiser of the Institute for Astronomy. Operations should begin by 2007. The science objectives of Pan-STARRS span the full range from planetary to cosmolog- ical. The instrument will conduct a survey of the solar system that is staggering in power compared to anything yet attempted. A useful measure of the raw survey power, SP , of a telescope is given by AΩ SP = (1) θ2 where A [m2] is the collecting area of the telescope primary, Ω [deg2] is the solid angle that is imaged and θ [arcsec] is the full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of the images { 2 { produced by the telescope. -

Halley’s 1910 return, which is described in a previous “Special Topics” presentation, was quite favorable, with a close approach to Earth (0.15 AU) and the exhibiting of the longest cometary tail ever recorded. APRIL 20, 2025: NASA’s Lucy mission is scheduled to pass by the main belt asteroid (52246) Donaldjohanson. Lucy is discussed in a previous “Special Topics” presentation. APRIL 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 APRIL 21, 2024: Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is predicted to pass through perihelion at a heliocentric distance of 0.781 AU. This comet, with a discussion of its viewing prospects for 2024, is a previous “Comet of the Week.” APRIL 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 APRIL 22, 2020: The annual Lyrid meteor shower should be at its peak. Normally this shower is fairly weak, with a peak rate of not much more than 10 meteors per hour, but has been known to exhibit significantly stronger activity on occasion. The moon is at its “new” phase on April 23 this year and thus the viewing circumstances are very good. 3# Ice & Stone 2020 Week 3: January 12-18, 2020 Presented by The Earthrise Institute This week in history JANUARY 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 JANUARY 12, 1910: A group of diamond miners in the Transvaal in South Africa spot a brilliant comet low in the predawn sky. This was the first sighting of what became known as the “Daylight Comet of 1910” (old style designations 1910a and 1910 I, new style designation C/1910 A1). It soon became one of the brightest comets of the entire 20th Century and will be featured as “Comet of the Week” in two weeks. JANUARY 12, 2005: NASA’S Deep Impact mission is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Deep Impact would encounter Comet 9P/Tempel 1 in July of that year and – under the mission name “EPOXI” – would encounter Comet 103P/Hartley 2 in November 2010. Comet 9P/Tempel 1 is a future “Comet of the Week” and the Deep Impact mission – and its results – will be discussed in more detail at that time. JANUARY 12, 2007: Comet McNaught C/2006 P1, the brightest comet thus far of the 21st Century, passes through perihelion at a heliocentric distance of 0.171 AU. Comet McNaught is this week’s “Comet of the Week.” JANUARY 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 JANUARY 13, 1950: Jan Oort’s paper “The Structure of the Cloud of Comets Surrounding the Solar System, and a Hypothesis Concerning its Origin,” is published in the Bulletin of the Astronomical Institute of The Netherlands. In this paper Oort demonstrates that his calculations reveal the existence of a large population of comets enshrouding the solar system at heliocentric distances of tens of thousands of Astronomical Units.
