Objectives At the end of the course the student has knowledge of the history of the timber harvesting and use of wood, knows the most important wood of domestic industrial species, get an overview of technologies, tools and machinery. Student has an overview of works in industry, and processing from damages and preservation of wood. In addition, student has an overview of the and production methods and the need for environmental management system in forest industry. Learning outcomes Subject of the successful student: - knows the recent history of wood harvesting and using; - knows main characteristics of wood and the features of industrial in Estonia; - has an overview of logging technologies, tools and machinery and is able to choose suitable in certain conditions; - has an overview of the works in the sawmill industry, knows the bases of timber drying; - get an overview of wood-processing technologies and equipments; - knows the damaging factors of wood and the preservation methods of wood; -knows the different methods to manufacture of pulp; - knows the technique of paper-making; - knows the bases of environmental management system and is able to justify the need for a modern forest industry enterprise; - after the field work knows how to design the dragging roads in the stand and to select the for . Brief description Following topics will be discussed: A recent history of wood harvesting and use; the properties of wood and macroscopic characteristics of industrial wood in Estonia; the technologies, equipment and machinery of timber harvesting; different tasks of timber harvesting; timber transporting; the works, equipments and machinery in sawmill industry; wood- damaging factors and preservation of wood; wood-processing technologies and equipments; different procedures for the production of ; paper producing and the classification of paper; implementation of environmental management system in forest industry enterprise.
