Best known fOr her NanaS, larger-than-life sculptureS of vOluptuous and brightly cOLOred femaLe fiGureS, Saint PhaLLe’S earLy wOrk datinG frOm the firSt haLf Of the 1960S haS received LeSS attentiOn frOm criticS and art hiStOrianS. ThiS prOject wiLL cOnSider three diStinct bOdieS Of wOrk frOm thiS periOd: the Tirs (French for “shots”), tactile aSSembLaGeS that the artiSt beGan ShOOtinG with a .22 caLiber rifle in 1961, the BirthS and BrideS, a serieS of figurative relief sculptureS that Saint Phalle prOduced between 1962-1965, and Hon-en katedral (Swedish for “She – a cathedral”) of 1966, the artiSt’S firSt monumentaL ScuLpture, which tOOk the fOrm Of a recLininG femaLe fiGure fiLLed with interiOr inStaLLatiOnS. The firSt chapter wiLL examine the Tirs with a focus on two key works: My Shoes or Memory of a Shoot and Grand Tir – Séance Galerie J (Grand Shoot – GaLLery J Session) of 1961. The second chapter wilL anaLyze the Births and Brides, LOOking specifically to La Mariée (Eva Maria) of 1963 and Accouchement Blanc ou Ghea (White Birth or Gaea) of 1964. The third chapter wilL addreSS Hon, analyzing the exterior structure of the sculpture, as well as the instaLLation pieces it contained. I wiLL be uSinG theSe three bOdieS Of wOrk tO expLOre the deveLOpment Of twO Of Saint PhaLLe’S key SubjectS, the cOnditiOn Of wOmen and the repreSentatiOn Of the femaLe bOdy, acrOSS her ScuLpturaL wOrk datinG frOm 1961 tO 1966. PredatinG the 2 fOrmatiOn Of the Mouvement de Libération des Femmes (MLF) and the more unified feminiSt movement that fOLLOwed the May 1968 prOteStS in France, Saint PhaLLe’S earLy wOrk repreSentS a nOtabLe exampLe Of prOtO-feminiSt expresSion. When Saint PhaLLe deveLOped her bOdy Of wOrk in the earLy 1960S, feminiSt cOncernS had OnLy just begun to find a place in postwar art practice, leaving her with a Limited diScOurSe tO buiLd upOn. As a reSuLt, Saint PhaLLe’S treatment Of wOmen’S issues in the firSt half of the 1960S depended largely on the current sOciO-pOLiticaL cLimate and the Limited feminiSt diaLOGue that waS avaiLabLe at the time. ThiS prOject wiLL expLOre the evOLutiOn Of fOrm and cOntent in Saint PhaLLe’S early sculpture thrOuGh theSe diStinct LenSeS, cOntempLatinG and re-contextualizing her protO-feminiSt expLOratiOn Of the femaLe bOdy. I wiLL Situate her wOrk within the pOStwar pOLiticaL, inteLLectuaL and artiStic cLimate in PariS, where She waS primariLy living and workinG durinG thiS periOd. Each chapter wiLL demonStrate a criticaL Shift in her sculpturaL practice, and anaLyze it in relation to a particular culturaL context. FOrmaLLy, thiS prOject wiLL iLLuStrate a prOGreSSiOn frOm an abStract, SymbOLic representation Of the bOdy, tO a more directLy fiGurative – and eventually, monumentaL – body sculpture. The first chapter wilL argue for a connection between the Tirs and the extreme viOLence aSSOciated with the French-AlGerian War. The SecOnd chapter wiLL ilLustrate a Link between Saint PhaLLe’S BirthS and BrideS and the feminiSt rhetOric Of Simone de BeauvOir. In the finaL chapter, Hon will be explored in relatiOn to historicaL conceptions of sexuaLity and space. By applying these different lenses to Saint Phalle’s early sculpture, I hope to re-contextualize her radical approach to 3 wOmen’S iSSueS, anaLyze the evOLutiOn Of the femaLe bOdy in her wOrk thrOuGhOut the 1960S and prOvide cLarity reGardinG an earLy feminiSt perSpective that haS Often been miSunderStOOd. DeSpite beinG ShOwn at majOr inStitutiOnS, incLudinG a 2014-2015 retrOSpective at Grand PaLaiS and the GuGGenheim MuSeum BiLbaO, there iS a shortage of criticaL Literature addressing the work of Niki de Saint PhaLLe. In the Limited SchOLarShip that iS avaiLabLe, hiStOrianS have cOme tO underStand the artiSt’S cOmpLex Oeuvre thrOuGh a primariLy biOGraphicaL methOdOLOGicaL apprOach. ThiS iS a logical lens to take up in regardS to Saint Phalle, as the artiSt consiStently streSSed her life story, both in interviewS and in her Own writinG. As curatOr Of her recent retrOSpective, CamiLLe MOrineau expLainS, “When Saint PhaLLe takeS up her pen, Often as the sOle authOr of her catalogueS or writing and rewriting her biOgraphy several timeS, SiGninG cOmmentarieS On her wOrkS in the third perSOn and SOmetimeS ObScurinG the readinG Of her wOrkS, She iS mereLy paLLiatinG the abSence Of inteLLiGent and infOrmed criticiSm Of her Oeuvre.”1 ThiS apprOach remainS particuLarLy dOminant in reLatiOn tO Saint PhaLLe’S feminiSt perSpective, aS her biOGraphy directLy refLected many Of the key StruGGLeS that wOmen Of the 20th century faced. Due to an aristocratic Catholic upbringing that urGed her tOwardS marriaGe and motherhOOd, Catherine DOSSin deScribeS Saint PhalLe’s Life StOry aS a “text bOOk exampLe” Of the pLiGht Of wOmen in the 1960S and 1 CamiLLe MOrineau, “An Oeuvre That SurpaSSeS the LimitS” in Niki de Saint Phalle 1930-2002, ed. PhiLip SuttOn (BiLbaO: FMGB GuGGenheim BiLbaO MuSeOa and La Fábrica, 2015), 30. 4 1970s.2 DoubtLessly, her personaL experience wouLd have pLayed a Large role in infOrminG her feminiSt Stance. HOwever, aS DOSSin’S Statement indicateS, thOSe experiences were refLective Of LarGer SyStematic iSSueS that affected many wOmen, not just Saint Phalle. I dO nOt intend tO deny the impOrtance Of Saint PhaLLe’S biOGraphicaL detaiLS in the LarGer prOject Of anaLyzinG her Oeuvre and itS feminiSt cOncernS. HOwever, thiS particular study wilL consider her work through an under-utilized lens, one which cOntempOrary SchOLarS Like CamiLLe MOrineau, Catherine DOSSin and AmeLia Jones have onLy recentLy started to appLy to Niki de Saint PhaLLe. The biographicaL apprOach neglects the tense socio-hiStOricaL cLimate in which Saint PhaLLe prOduced thiS bOdy Of wOrk, and perSOnaLizeS StruGGLeS and cOncernS that appLied tO wOmen thrOughOut weStern sOciety. By situating thiS particular body of work within its cultural context, linking it tO bOth cOntempOraneOuS eventS and the exiStinG feminiSt discourse in France, I hope to push this approach further and expand upon the Lens thrOugh which we underStand Saint Phalle’s larger oeuvre. ULtimateLy I hOpe tO Situate thiS bOdy Of wOrk cLearLy in itS SOciO-historicaL context, encouraginG a methOdOLOGicaL apprOach that haS yet tO receive adequate attentiOn frOm art hiStOrianS. 3 Dossin. “Niki de Saint PhaLLe,” 34-36. 6 THE TIRS Niki de Saint PhaLLe created her first Tirs or Shooting Paintings in February of 1961 OutSide Of the StudiO She Shared with Jean TinGueLy at the ImpaSSe ROnSin in Paris.1 The reSuLtinG wOrkS cOmbine eLementS Of paintinG and ScuLpture, incorporating found objects that are unified in high relief by an erratic spattering of cOLOr. ThOrOuGhLy punctured and drippinG with paint, theSe aSSembLaGeS appear wOunded and viOLated, the victims Of a viOLent act. Within an Oeuvre deprived Of serious scholarship, the TirS have received more attentiOn frOm art hiStOrianS, finding incluSiOn in majOr cataLOGueS that deaL with perfOrmance and the bOdy.2 DeSpite

On view from March 11 to September 6, 2021, Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life will feature over 200 works created from the mid-1960s until the artist’s death, including sculptures, prints, drawings, jewelry, films, and archival materials. Highlighting Saint Phalle’s interdisciplinary approach and engagement with key social and political issues, the exhibition will focus on works that she created to transform environments, individuals, and society. From the beginning of her career in the 1950s, Saint Phalle pushed against accepted artistic practices, creating work that used assemblage as well as performative and collaborative modes of production. Saint Phalle initially gained attention in the early 1960s with her Tirs, paintings produced by firing a gun at plaster reliefs to release pockets of paint, and Nanas, brightly colored sculptures of female figures whose sinuous curves would inform much of her work to come. Beginning in the late 1960s, Saint Phalle started producing large-scale sculptures, which led to an expansion of her practice into architectural projects, sculpture gardens, books, prints, films, theater sets, clothing, jewelry, and, famously, her own perfume. Central to the exhibition is an examination of Saint Phalle’s large-scale outdoor sculptures and architectural projects, including Le rêve de l’oiseau (built for Rainer von Diez between 1968 and 1971); Golem, a playground in Jerusalem (1971-72); Le Dragon de Knokke, a children’s playhouse in Belgium (1973-75); and La fontaine Stravinsky (1983); among others.

    New Realisms Simple exhaustion from the numerous formulas of abstract painting and the new consumer society spreading across Western Europe gave rise to a series of proposals about a return to “the real”. The object, movement, the performative, the event and occupation of the public sphere became the new focuses of European artists who, all initially connected under the label Nouveau Réalisme, soon began to expand into a number of concepts that lit the fuse of the explosion of the 1960s and 70s. eruption of “the real” in the arts preda- tes this, and is like a rhizome of concepts outside the program, from the work of the affichistes and décollagistes (Jacques Vi- lleglé (1926), Raymond Hains (1926) and François Dufrêne (1930-1982) to Yves Klein’s monochromes, via Jean Tinguely’s machines. ISBN 978-0-7546-6141-2 Review by Sarah Wilson, Courtauld Institute of Art This is a fascinating book: the first critical exposé in English of French critic Pierre Restany’s Nouveau réalisme movement, baptised in 1960, which ran parallel to American Pop but was ambivalent about Americanisation, a highly political issue. It was only in 2007 that a major exhibition at the Grand Palais did justice to the group as a whole, following a retrospective at the Musée de la Ville de Paris in 1986; the Centre Pompidou has recently staged a series of superb monographic shows of Nouveau Réaliste artists: Yves Klein, Jacques Villeglé and Arman. Like Pop, this movement broke from traditional School of Paris painting or sculpture which kept to traditional materials and modernist aesthetics of representation and abstraction. It introduced what Restany called la prise sociologique du réel: a ‘sociological’ engagement with real life into art, in the living presence of Marcel Duchamp, dada inventor of the ‘readymade’ before the First World War. Restany’s show ‘40 degrees above Dada’ of May 1961 acknowledges this paternity. To visual art one can add the new emphasis on ‘things’ in the French novel or the writings of Georges Perec, and the theoretical emphasis of ‘everyday life’ in Henri Lefebvre or the young Pierre Bourdieu; a heady ambient discourse that distinguishes Nouveau Réalisme from the pragmatic relations with objects of contemporary American artists such as Robert Rauschenburg.

This reading, defended by Pierre Restany him - self, was reinforced by a comparison to pop art and by the idea – for - mulated by the situationnists but widely accepted – that “with Nouveau Réalisme, the political right finally found its art.” It also drew on the suc - cess of works whose disturbing or provocative aspects were kept at an acceptable level by the use of humor or distancing devices. This is the case with Arman’s Poubelles organiques , all the less repugnant as the Plexiglas constitutes an absolute hygienic barrier; with Hains and Villeglé’s lace - rated posters which, once remounted on canvas, have more to say about the history of collage and painting than about the walls they came from; Tinguely’s sculptures, whose humor attenuates their darkness; Spoerri’s tableaux-pièges [snare-pictures ], in which time, pinned like a dead butter - fly, refers to the triviality of a meal’s relief.

It was intended as a way of promoting France’s interests on the global art scene and its main difference with other such events had to do with its emphasis on the emerging artists. The first editions of the Biennale were organized by Raymond Cogniat and Jacques Lassaigne who were both civil servants and whose career had started at a time when Paris’ role was supposed to be central in the art world.

    PRESS Basel, October 2014 RELEASE Poetry of the Metropolis The Affichistes Museum Tinguely, Basel: 22 October 2014 – 11 January 2015 One of the most radical and simultaneously most poetic approaches to reality was made from 1950 onwards by the “Affichistes”: Francois Dufrêne, Raymond Hains, and Jacques Villeglé belonged, like Jean Tinguely, to the “Nouveaux Réalistes” group. Their creative work fitted in with that of the like-minded Mimmo Rotella and Wolf Vostell. The exhibition “Poetry of the Metropolis. The Affichistes” jointly devised by Museum Tinguely and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt has as its theme an artistic current which, outside of France, in Switzerland and Germany too, has been largely disregarded up to now. The Affichistes are now compre- hensively on show in Switzerland for the first time ever. The exhibition is arranged in the form of a trail, which Mimmo Rotella, Per l'insalata, 1961 presents the urban space as a place of varied inspiration Collezione Peruz Milano © 2014 ProLitteris, Zurich for strolling flâneurs and creates locations for encoun- tering the radical inventions of these five artists; be they décollages, or filmic, photo- graphic, or even poetical experiments. Dufrêne, Hains, and Villeglé, later Rotella too, came together with Arman, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, and Jean Tinguely to form the “Nouveaux Réalistes”, founded by means of manifesto by Pierre Restany in 1960. Although the artistic field that revolves around the smallest common denominator, the “nouvelles approches perceptives du reel”, is thus marked out, in the Affichistes’ case this classification does not take account of the fact that, already in 1950 or thereabouts, they were important trailblazers for a new thinking that prepared the broader field of artistic acting and creating in around 1960.

    Niki de Saint Phalle’s International Workshop Like the great cathedrals of Europe that inspired her work, Niki de Saint Phalle’s own monumental projects are the creation of both a singular vision and a collective ideal. Since the 1970s, she has collaborated with a team of artists, artisans, and other specialists whose own unique talents and fierce dedication were critical to the realization of many of her large-scale environmental gardens, parks, and public art projects. The building of Queen Califia’s Magical Circle is no exception and for the four individuals whose stories are highlighted below, the opportunity to work with Saint Phalle over the years has been deeply affecting on both a personal and professional level. “I have been very fortunate in my life to work with many leading artists like Richard Serra and Jasper Johns and I think that Niki has been one of my major influences,” said Ron McPherson, whose company La Paloma has fabricated many of the artist’s large sculptures since 1994. “It is just incredible to see a person that can live in so many different worlds at one time—a mature woman, a child, a mystic, and a realist.” Marcelo Zitelli, La Jolla, California Argentinean-born Marcelo Zitelli first met Saint Phalle in 1987 in Paris where he had come to work in the theater. For the first five years, he lived in the artist’s home, assisting her in the making of small maquettes from original drawings, and working with her and Jean Tinguely on the fountain at Château Chinon for French President Mitterand, and at the Tarot Garden in southern Tuscany.

    MODERN ART Press Release Nikolas Gambaroff Raymond Hains Jacques Villeglé 25 February – 9 April, 2011 Private view 24 February, 6-8pm Stuart Shave/Modern Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Nikolas Gambaroff, Raymond Hains and Jacques Villeglé. The exhibition brings examples of Nikolas Gambaroff's new work together in the suggestion of a conversation with related art historical antecedents. The use of materiality in all these artists’ work – the literal ripping and tearing associated with décollage – deals with the collection, division and conflict of visual information. Jacques Villeglé was born in France in 1926. Since the late 1940s, Villeglé has worked to produce a substantial and singular body of work from found layers of ripped street posters. Doing little more than selecting and mounting them on canvas as paintings, Villeglé identifies compositions that reveal a conditioned way of seeing and a critical eye brought to bear upon the tasks of isolating both beauty and socio-political affect in the disorder of everyday urban life. Villeglé is widely considered a figure at the forefront of the twentieth century European avant-garde, whose work pioneered radical approaches to appropriative art making. Raymond Hains was born in France in 1926, and died in 2005. Hains met Villeglé in the mid-1940s, and together they developed décollages made from found, torn street posters. Working together in the 1950s Hains and Villeglé gave themselves the label of ‘affichistes’, before becoming associated with the Lettrist and Ultra-Lettrist movements, and later counting among the founders of Nouveau Réalisme. In the mid 1960s Hains chose to distance himself from the Nouveau Réalistes, and unlike Villeglé, sought to continually reinvent his practice throughout the course of his life.

Born in 1954, Pierre Marie Lejeune defines himself as a sculptor-draftsman. Fellow of the "Villa Medici outside the walls" in 1983, he spent a year in Luxor. His meeting in the 80s with Niki de Saint Phalle will be decisive and strong ties of work and friendship will unite them until the death of Niki in 2002. Since then, he has not stopped developing a repertoire of forms which is similar to the writing of a virtual alphabet that he declines throughout his work. His favorite materials are steel, glass, light and water.
