WITH A LETTER FROM DARWIN TO JOSEPH BANKS 42 Darwin, Erasmus. THE BOTANIC GARDEN; A Poem, in Two Parts. Part I. Containing The Economy of Vegetation. Part II. The Loves of the Plants. With Philosophical Notes. London, Printed for J. Johnson, St. Paul’s Church-Yard. MDCCXCI. Entered at Stationers Hall. London; Printed for J. Johnson; 1791. ***Comprising the First Edition of Part I and the third edition of Part II, together comprising the First Edition of the complete work. Part II was originally published in 1789, two years before Part I, and a second edition was issued in 1790. Erasmus Darwin, a physician, philosopher and poet, was one of the finest scientist-philosophers of his day as well as a literary figure of the first rank. He was the grandfather of Charles Darwin and this work is important as one of the early precursors to the evolutionary theories of his better-known grandson. Part II, the first to be published, entitled “The Loves of the Plants” derives its subject from the sexual system of Linnaeus. Although written as an epic poem, a form which may seem strange to us now, this work is both highly regarded as literature and immensely informative as science; its extensive footnotes further enhance its informative value. Darwin had established a botanic garden near his home in Litchfield in 1778 and began composing the poem in the following year. Botany was then a very fashionable subject and it is said that he was offered the then vast sum of ten shillings a line for Part II by the publisher Johnson and a thousand guineas before publication for Part I. This part, entitled “The Economy of Vegetation” is a much more wide-ranging discursive poem, again supplemented by extensive footnotes commenting on many aspects of the natural history and geology of the day. In addition, this part has especial interest for Australia through its connection with the first settlement at Botany Bay. On James Cook’s first voyage in the Endeavour, Joseph Banks had collected clay from Botany Bay which he sent to Joshua Wedgwood, who made from it a famous medallion. Wedgwood asked his friend, Erasmus Darwin to write a poem to accompany this medallion and an engraving from it was published as a vignette on the title-page of the official account of the First Fleet, The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay. In the preliminaries to Phillip’s voyage an account is given of this vignette which bears repeating: “The elegant vignette in the title-page, was engraved from a medallion which the ingenious Mr. Wedgewood caused to be modelled from a small piece of clay brought from Sydney Cove. The clay proves to be of a fine texture, and will be found very useful for the manufactory of earthern ware. The design is allegorical; it represents Hope encouraging Art and Labour, under the influence of Peace, to pursue the employments necessary to give security and happiness to an infant settlement. The following verses upon the same subject, and in allusion to the medallion, were written by the author of The Botanic Garden, and will speak more powerfully for themselves than any encomium we could bestow.” This is followed by the poem itself, “Visit of Hope to Sydney Cove, near Botany Bay.” The poem is highly prophetic in its vision of the future Sydney, including even the Harbour Bridge: Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books  “There shall broad streets their stately walls extend, “The circus widen, and the crescent bend; “There, ray’d from cities o’er the cultur’d land, “Shall bright canals, and solid roads expand.- “There the proud arch, Colossus-like, bestride “Yon glittering streams, and bound the chasing tide; “Embellish’d villas crown the landscape-scene, “Farms wave with gold, and orchards blush between.- “There shall tall spires, and dome-capt towers ascend, “And piers and quays their massy structures blend;

The vignette is re-engraved (in rather better quality) for Part I of The Botanic Garden where it appears in the plate opposite page 87, accompanied by a new reference in verse to Botany Bay

‘... Form the poor fetter’d SLAVE on bended knee / From Britain’s sons imploring to be free; / Or with fair HOPE the brightening scenes improve, / And cheer the dreary wastes at Sydney-cove; / Or bid Mortality rejoice and mourn / O’er the fine forms on PORTLAND’S mystic urn.-’

In an accompanying footnote it is explained that these lines allude to “two cameos of Wedgwood’s manufacture; one of a Slave in chains” (also illustrated) which was widely distributed to assist in the abolition of the slave trade; “and the other a cameo of Hope attended by Peace, and Art, and Labour; which was made from the clay of Botany Bay; to which place he sent many of them to shew the inhabitants what their materials would do, and to encourage their industry.” Wedgwood was in turn much admiring of the verses and sent a much better engraving of Cupid to accompany The Loves of the Plants - this is incorporated in the second edition of Part II and again here in the third. It is clear that Erasmus Darwin took a keen interest in Australia and in particular its natural productions: in his 1794 work “Zoonomia, or the Laws of Organic Life” he quoted almost exactly from John Hunter’s “AN HISTORICAL JOURNAL OF THE TRANSACTIONS AT PORT JACKSON ...”

The present work, The Botanic Garden is also noteworthy for its fine illustrations: a stipple-engraved frontispiece and nine botanical plates in Part II and two botanical plates, a section of the earth, the Wedgwood cameos, two plates by Fuseli, and four fine plates of the Portland Vase in Part I, alluded to in the quotation from the poem shown above. One of the plates by Fuseli “The Fertilization of Egypt” is engraved and signed by William Blake and those of the Portland vase are also generally agreed to have been engraved by him although they are unsigned. Although this interesting work is of obvious Australian relevance it is not recorded by Ferguson. [With]

A fine Autograph Letter, signed, from Erasmus Darwin to Joseph Banks, sending queries and comments relating to the translation of Linnaeus which Darwin was preparing for publication by the Botanical Society at Litchfield, and to his poem “The Botanic Garden.” [Radburn Hall] Derby, Oct. 14 [17]81. 3½ pages, small 4to, neatly but unnecessarily reinforced at the hinge, with slight glue stains, and with small printed label “ERASMUS DARWIN” affixed to foot of first page, otherwise in fine, clean condition and highly legible; accompanied by a an autograph letter, signed, from Francis Darwin (the son of Charles and great grandson of Erasmus) to John Enys (from whose collection it came), 4 pages, small 8vo, explaining some aspects of the Erasmus letter.

This most interesting letter from Darwin to Banks was previously known only from a copy made for Dawson Turner in the 1830s. A very brief summary, misdated Oct. 24, is given at page 252 of Warren Dawson’s The Banks Letters (British Museum, Natural History, 1958). The full text of the letter is available on request. Darwin deluged Banks with letters and constantly sought his advice on matters of terminology, translation 10 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books and publication, and Banks’ assistance was invaluable to Darwin as he worked on translations of Systema Vegetabilium, The System of Vegetables (1783) and Genera Plantarum, The Families of Plants (1787). As can be seen from the remarks in this letter Banks checked Darwin’s translations of terms and lent many precious books from his own library. In 1781, Darwin was already working on Part II (the first published) of The Botanic Garden, and his difficulties with the new scientific terminology are interesting because some botanists favoured euphemistic renderings of Linnaeus’ sexual system of classification. However, Darwin is responsible for at least fifty new words in English where his usage preceded those cited in the OED (see King-Hele’s Erasmus Darwin, 1999). The reference to Anna Seward (she who wrote the Elegy on Captain Cook, but this was possibly actually largely written by Erasmus) is also interesting, as the poem referred to was later used, unacknowledged, and greatly to her annoyance, as a preface to ‘The Loves of the Plants’ (Part II of The Botanic Garden). It seems, however, that her annoyance may have had more to do with his failure to marry her after the death of his first wife (see DNB). Darwin agreed with Banks about the Tremella or star-jelly fungus, and in the published text of The Botanic Garden (page 43, Part II) he corrects his own suggestion that it was turned to a white gelatinous substance by frost, stating in the footnote that “... but have since been well informed that the Tremella Nostoc is a mucillage voided by Herons after they have eaten frogs ....” Darwin thanked Banks for all his help and support by dedicating The System of Vegetables to him, and both this work and The Families of Plants are referred to in the preface to Part II of The Botanic Garden.

UNCUT IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS WITH A LETTER FROM JOSEPH BANKS 43 [Haweis, Thomas; Editor]. A MISSIONARY VOYAGE TO THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC OCEAN, performed in the Years 1796, 1797, 1798, in the Ship Duff, commanded by Captain James Wilson. Compiled from Journals of the Officers and the Missionaries; and illustrated with Maps, Charts, and Views, drawn by Mr. William Wilson, and engraved by the most eminent Artists. With a Preliminary Discourse on the Geography and History of the South Sea Islands; and an Appendix, including Details never before published, of the Natural and Civil State of Otaheite; by a Committee appointed for the Purpose by the Directors of the Missionary Society. Published for the Benefit of the Society. London: Printed by S. Gosnell, for T. Chapman, No. 151, Fleet Street. 1799. Med. 4to, First Issue of First Edition, pp. [xii](title, dedication, Advertisement, Prints (i.e. list of plates) & Errata and Contents), c(Preliminary Discourse containing Geographical and Historical Account of the Islands where Missionaries have settled [etc.] - Pp. [i]-lxxxviii; and “Letter of Instructions to Captain Wilson, from the Directors”, Pp. [lxxxix] - c); pp. [1]-420, [12](Subscribers’ Names); 7 maps & charts (5 folding), 6 plates, appendix (on Otaheitian government, society, inhabitants, deities, customs, natural history, etc.) ; ENTIRELY UNCUT IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS (the joints a little loose, but the cords and sewing quite sound, with the backstrip and original title-label substantially intact; occasional slight foxing and offsetting of plates, but generally very clean and crisp); a very fine, exceptional copy, preserved in in a quarter morocco book-form Solander box. London; Printed by S. Gosnell, for T. Chapman; 1799. ***Ferguson 301; Hill 2, No. 1894. Another edition bearing the imprint “Printed for T. Chapman ... by T. Gillet” and with a completely different set of subscriber’s names and the large map of the Feegees considerably reduced, was issued almost simultaneously (see Ferguson 302). The purpose of employing two printers appears to have been to ensure the speedy production of sufficient copies to meet the demand. This edition printed by Gosnell is generally accepted as the first and is preferred for its larger paper size (241 x 305 mm. uncut, vs. 200 x 260 mm. for the Gillet edition) and better quality paper. An important work, it is the account of the first English missionary enterprise in the South Seas and was largely composed from the journal of the chief mate, William Wilson, with additions from the papers of the captain (James Wilson) and importantly from the then-unpublished journal of James Morrison, one of the pardoned Bounty mutineers (it was later published in 1935 by the Golden Cockerel Press). The hostility of the natives at Tahiti and Tonga caused many of the missionaries to seek refuge at Sydney. Some of them settled in Australia “and founded families important in Australian history” - Ferguson. Apart from its missionary interest the work contains much valuable information on Tahiti, Fiji and the Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 11 Marquesas. The Duff Group in the Santa Cruz islands was newly discovered on this voyage. The anonymous editor, Dr. Thomas Haweis, was an early promoter and one of the founders of the London Missionary Society, reference to which is made in the accompanying fine letter:

Banks, Sir Joseph. An Autograph Letter, signed, to the editor of the above work, Thomas Haweis, 2 pages, small 4to, with conjugate leaf bearing the recipient’s address and postmark (7 o’Clock, 12 NO 98 Night). The letter, in excellent condition, lightly folded, reads as follows:

Soho Square Novr. 12 1798.

Rev’d Sir

I Return you many thanks for the books you were so good as to send to me & to my friend Mr. Dalrymple, tho it was not what I meant to ask you but I have perused these [?] with both pleasure & profit. The Zeel [?] & ardor with which it abounds is not I can assure you good Sir lost upon me.

What I wished to possess & to put my friend Mr. Dalrymple in possession of is the Report of the directors previous to the month of May last which I see is prefixed to a set of sermons preached in that month if any separate [underlined] copies of that report are remaining I shall be thankfull for two.

I wish I had time to profit by the obliging indulgence you offer me of sending me a part of the Mss of the Duffs voyage but at this time of the year owing to the approaching Anniversary of the Royal Society I have indeed very little time which I can call my own.

It would be a great indulgence to me to see the maps & charts as they are drawn off but I fear the trouble of sending them would be great, if I might be allowed to pay the people who bring them for their trouble the obligation would be compleat.

I rejoice with great sincerity to hear that your ship is to proceed the second time with another cargo of benefactors to mankind, if I flattered myself that I could be of any use in adjusting your new plan ^ I would be happy to see it ^ if not why should I be troublesome to you.

I am Sir with due Regard & Esteem your obedient servant Jos. Banks [signed].

Watson, Potts, Williams, Cross, Jackson, Moncrieffe, Walker, Jenkin, Burnet, Wilson, Wogan, Exshaw, Vallance, Beatty, White, Whitestone, Burton, Byrne, Mills, J. Porter, Stewart, Wallace, Higly, Cash, Herey and Mc.Kenzie. M,DCC,LXXXIV. 3 vols., demy 8vo, text & 1 vol. med. 4to, Atlas; Vol. 1, pp. [viii], xcviii, 422(last blank); portrait of Cook by Dance as frontispiece; Vol. 2, pp. [xvi](first 2 blank), 552(last 3 blank); Vol. 3, pp. [xii](last blank), 560(last blank); folding comparative table of numbers expressed in various languages of the Malay region; 6 other appendices; Atlas, 25 (of 26) folding and full-page charts and coastal views; text vols. in full contemporary tree calf with contrasting spine labels; (spine ends with very slight wear & a couple of small defects to leather); atlas in contemporary quarter calf, with marbled sides (spine a little worn, with a small defect at top); generally very fine, clean and crisp; an excellent set. Dublin; Printed for H. Chamberlaine [etc.]; 1784. ***Beddie 1546; Forbes 72. Although the title refers to maps and charts and there is at the end of the preliminaries to the first volume a two-page list of 26 charts and views with directions for their placement throughout the three volumes, the text volumes contain only the frontispiece to Vol. I and this is not listed. The charts and views were 16 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books never present in these text volumes and this is clearly one of the forms in which the book was issued -- we have handled a similar set (without Atlas) before. Beddie notes that the Baillieu Library copy is similar, having only the portrait frontispiece. This set carries the bookplate of John B. Gilmore on the front pastedown of all three text volumes and his contemporary inscription dated Boghead Janry. 1st 1789. The Atlas in similar, but not quite matching, contemporary quarter calf, with marbled sides, carries the bookplate of David Rochfort and a contemporary manuscript list of the charts and views contained therein. The individual charts carry corresponding manuscript numbers (1-25). The printed numbers (roman numerals) on the charts and the directions for placing them (in the text volumes) generally correspond with the list printed in text Volume I, but there are several discrepancies and internal inconsistencies (to the Atlas). Plate XVI, Views on the West coast of North America, to the Westward of Cook’s River, is lacking; Plate II is numbered IV (as is also Plate IV); Plate XIX is numbered XVI and there is no plate numbered XIX. While clearly contemporary and intended to accompany the text volumes, the Atlas was almost certainly matched to this set at a later date and there is no indication the missing chart was ever present. #20444 A$5500.00

70 Cook, Captain James. A VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. Performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in His Majesty’s Ships the Resolution and Discovery; in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780. In three volumes. Vol. I. and II. written by Captain James Cook, F.R.S. Vol. III. by Captain James King, LL.D. and F.R.S. Published by Order of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. The Third Edition. London: Printed by H. Hughs, for G. Nicol, Bookseller to His Majesty, in the Strand; and T. Cadell, in the Strand. M.DCC.LXXXV. 3 vols., med. 4to, Third Edition; Vol. I, pp. [x](title, verso blank, & Contents), xcvi(Introduction & List of Plates), 422(last blank); 7 charts & views (5 folding); Vol. II, pp. [ii](title, verso blank), [xii](Contents), 548; 11 charts & plates (6 folding); Vol. III, pp. [ii](title, verso blank), [xii](Contents, last blank), 556, 557-564(A Defence of the Arguments advanced in the Introduction to Captain Cook’s last Voyage, against the existence of Cape Circumcision); 6 charts & profiles (2 folding), full-page table of bank capital facing page 286, folding comparative table of languages, 7 appendices (Pp. 489-556); contemporary full tree calf; (Vol. I, expertly rebacked with original backstrip preserved & new endpapers, with title-page & following leaf in Volume I repaired at inner margin and resized; following 5 or six leaves a little stained in inner margin; last leaf in Vol. I also resized; one chart in Vol. III repaired in inner margin; a couple of expert restorations to leather); notwithstanding these essentially minor defects, a very nice, clean set. London; Printed by H. Hughs; 1785. ***Without the folio Atlas. See Holmes 47; Beddie 1553; Hill I, Pp. 61-62; Hill 2, 361 (First Edition); Forbes 86. The “Defence of the Arguments ... “ which is by William Wales, appears for the first time in this Third Edition which is in other respects similar to the first and second editions of the previous year, both sold out within days of publication. Forbes, whose collations are meticulous, makes no mention of the table of bank capital (“Corrected to the Fifth of January, 1786”) opposite page 286, and there seems no obvious reason for its inclusion, except for references to South Sea stock. The table is headed “(To face Page 286.)”, but it seems likely that this is an accidental inclusion from another contemporary publication: it has clearly been present in this copy since its original collation. #64850 A$9500.00

Furneaux’s Narrative of his Proceedings during the Separation of the two Ships. The Seventh Edition. Ornamented with several Plates. London. Printed for G. Kearsley, No. 46, Fleet-Street. 1798. Demy 12mo; pp. [ii](title, verso blank), [iv](adv.), iii-[iv](Contents, verso blank), 328(last 20 index); frontispiece and 7 other plates, index; contemporary full mottled calf (neatly rebacked in contemporary style; a fine, clean copy; very scarce. London; G. Kearsley; 1798. ***Beddie 60. The plates are as follows: frontispiece, portrait of , Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 17 but here at page 187 in accordance with the number at top left; facing page 42, Head of a Chief of Otaheite; facing page 53, A Dance of Ulietea by Females; facing page 79, View of a perforated Rock; facing page 86, A War Canoe of New Zealand (showing also a Branch of the Bread fruit); facing page 160, Inhabitants of Dusky Bay; facing page 192, A Morai or burial place; and facing page 268, Instruments & Weapons used by the Natives [etc.]. Cook, James. AN ABRIDGMENT OF CAPTAIN COOK’S LAST VOYAGE, performed in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780. For making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere, By Order of His Majesty. Extracted from the Quarto Edition, in Three Volumes. Containing a Relation of all the Interesting Transactions, particularly those relative to the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook; to which are added, extracts from Captain King’s Account of his Life and public Services. The Seventh Edition. Ornamented with several Plates and Improved by a copious Index, also a Chart of the Tracts of the Ships. London: Printed for C. and G. Kearsley, No. 46, Fleet-Street. MDCCXCIV. Demy 12mo; pp. xxiv, 442, [16](index), [2](adv.); folding frontispiece (Death of Cook), folding chart, 7 other plates, index; contemporary full mottled calf (rebacked in matching contemporary style); a fine, clean copy; very scarce. London; C. and G. Kearsley; 1794. ***Beddie 1576; Forbes 233. The first and second editions of this abridgment were published in 1784 and the fourth, fifth and sixth in 1787. Neither Beddie nor Forbes record a third edition, but both make the minor error throughout of mis-spelling the word ABRIDGMENT (“ABRIDGEMENT”) in the title. This copy appears to be quite complete, as issued, with a total of 9 plates including the chart. The plates are as follows: folding frontispiece showing the death of Captain Cook, but here facing page 320 in accordance with the number at the head; facing page ix, Royal Society Medal by Mr. Pingo; facing page 1, the folding chart exhibiting the discoveries made by Cook in his three voyages; facing page 129, Human Sacrifice in Otaheite; facing page 347, A Canoe of the Sandwich Islands; facing page 376, Manner of Travelling in Kamtschatka; facing page 389, Shooting Sea Horses; facing page 389, A White Bear; and facing page 415, A Winter’s Habitation in Kamtschatka. Various copies of these scarce editions appear to have different numbers of plates, but the number present here (17 in total) is, we believe, the maximum and most complete. Although published four years apart these two “Seventh Edition” volumes appear to have been issued, or at least purchased, at the same time and are uniformly bound in full contemporary mottled calf (now neatly rebacked in contemporary style). The original binder has inserted the “landscape” plates lengthways and neatly folded, an arrangement which has contributed to this set being exceptionally fine and clean, both plates and text; a most attractive set and rare thus. This set recently belonged to the Australian diplomat W. R. Crocker, and has his signature dated 1964 in the front of each volume. #24324 A$3250.00

[Amsterdam; N. Israel; 1967]. ***Bibliotheca Australiana No. 14. This edition Beddie 701; see Holmes 3, Beddie 694, for original edition. The first issue contained a Dedication to Banks and Solander, which was suppressed after a small number of copies had been circulated, following the 18 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books publication of an advertisement by Banks and Solander, disclaiming any responsibility for its publication. The dedication is not reproduced in this facsimile. This rare surreptitious account of Cook’s First Voyage preceded Hawkesworth’s official account by two years. It is the first published account of Cook’s First Voyage and of his discovery of the Eastern Coast of Australia, which led to the Foundation of Australia eighteen years later. The authorship of the work is a matter of conjecture - it has been ascribed to JAMES MAGRA (or MATRA) and others, but the evidence is inconclusive. #26437 A$550.00

THE FIRST LOCALLY PRINTED HISTORY OF HAWAII 93 Dibble, Sheldon. HISTORY OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS. By Sheldon Dibble. [Three-line biblical quotation]. Lahainaluna. Press of the Mission Seminary. 1843. Med. 12mo, First Edition; pp. viii, 452(last blank), [453]-464(Appendix); folding map; original cloth; (some light browning); a fine copy, preserved in a full morocco folding box, decorated with geometric onlays, moire silk chemise; very rare. Lahainaluna; Press of the Mission Seminary; 1843. ***A greatly expanded version of the author’s “History and General Views of the Sandwich Islands Mission” published in New York by Taylor & Dodd in 1839, this was the first locally-printed history of Hawaii. Chapter I contains an account of Cook’s discovery of the islands and of his subsequent visit which resulted in his death. Dibble’s account is highly critical of Cook and his ‘immoral conduct’ in accepting the divine honours accorded him by the population. Holmes notes that as a result of Dibble’s “biased attitude” Cook’s reputation in the United States suffered for some years. Dibble’s account was based on replies to a questionaire which he submitted to the oldest inhabitants with no attempt made to collate the information with other sources or to check its accuracy and it has been suggested that the memories elicited were a conflation of Cook’s conduct with that of later visitors. Bernard Smith has commented that this is “an interesting example of the creation of anti-Cook ideology”. Holmes 89 (noting that some copies lack the Appendix - pp. 453-464 - and some very few copies include four views); Beddie 2479; Hunnewell, Page 35 (describing a copy without the Appendix); Sabin 19992 (of great scarcity); Hill 2, 476 (describing the Appendix as “rare”); Taylor, page 145 (mis-attributing the printing of the 1839 work to the Mission Seminary). Forbes, 1383 gives the most thorough and enlightening description and notes that the Appendix was printed to include an account of the “Provisonal Cession” and restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty. London; H. Fisher, Son, and P. Jackson; 1827. ***Considerably enlarged from the first edition of 1826. See Hill 2, 545 & 546 (first & third editions only); Forbes 656. “The Narrative of English missionary William Ellis is particularly important, as it was the first book written about the Hawaiian islands and the first serious notice of the islands since Captain Cook’s discovery of them forty-eight years earlier. It may be called the first scientific book on Hawaii: although its main purpose was to report on mission progress, and Ellis was primarily interested in local manners and traditions, he was sufficiently expansive to include observations on such natural and cultural history topics as volcanoes, antiquities, and the anthropology of the islands.” -- Hill. He includes an account of the death of Captain Cook from an eyewitness report of native Hawaiians. #12926 A$1700.00

An enigmatic American who sailed with Cook, Matra (who changed his name from Magra) was the first (in 1771) to have published a major book on the “Endeavour” voyage, and strove to found a colony in New South Wales for dispossessed American loyalists, only to end his days as Consul at Tangier. London; W. Strahan & T. Cadell; 1773. ***This is the First Edition of the official account of Cook’s first voyage, combined with the official accounts of the voyages of Byron, Wallis and Carteret, and drawn up, as stated in the title, by John Hawkesworth, for which he was paid the enormous sum of 6000 pounds. Unfortunately Hawkesworth, a minor literary figure, had no direct knowledge or experience of the matters described and it is impossible to tell from the narrative whether it is the voice of Cook or Banks or the commanders of the other voyages which one hears or it is the fanciful suppositions and embellishments of Hawkesworth. But, as Holmes notes, the work is valuable for the fine illustrations engraved from drawings by Sydney Parkinson (who is nowhere acknowledged as the artist) and the charts by Cook, Bayly and others. This set is one of the earliest issues, without the Chart of the Streight of Magellan (and no sign that it was ever present), as noted by Holmes, but with the Directions for Placing the Cuts (2 leaves following Page xxxvi). Holmes 5; Beddie 648; Hill I, Pp. 139-40; Hill 2, No. 782. Offered, as is, at a modest price; repairs may be effected at the request and cost of the purchaser. #717 A$6750.00

FIRST PUBLISHED ACCOUNT OF COOK’S SECOND VOYAGE. 144 [Marra, John]. JOURNAL OF THE RESOLUTION’S VOYAGE, In 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. On Discovery to the Southern Hemisphere, by which the Non-Existence of an undiscovered Continent, between the Equator and the 50th Degree of Southern Latitude, is demonstratively proved. Also a Journal of the Adventure’s Voyage, in the Years 1772, 1773, and 1774. With an Account of the Separation of the two Ships, and the most remarkable Incidents that befel each. Interspersed with Historical and Geographical Descriptions of the Islands and Countries discovered in the Course of their respective Voyages. Illustrated with a Chart, in which the Tracks of both Vessels are accurately laid down, and other Cuts. [Edited by D. Henry]. London: Printed for F. Newbery, at the Corner of St. Paul’s Church-Yard. 1775. First Edition; pp. xiv, 328 (pp. 19/20 - leaf D2 is a cancel); folding chart, 5 plates; finely bound in modern sprinkled calf in contemporary style; some mild foxing pretty well throughout, but a very good attractive copy; very rare. London; F. Newbery; 1775. ***The first published book to contain a factual account of the Antarctic regions. The track chart shows the three points of penetration of the Antarctic circle by the Resolution (the first accompanied by the Adventure - shortly afterwards the ships experienced great difficulty in keeping company due to the icy conditions, and were soon separated by a severe storm) and includes on the third occasion the notation “land seen” although the narrative makes it clear that this was by no means certain. Correspondence between Cook and the Admiralty indicates that the author was the Irishman, John Marra, gunner’s mate on the Resolution, and whom Cook had picked up at Batavia on the Endeavour Voyage. The work was edited by David Henry, editor and a voluminous contributor to the “Gentleman’s Magazine” for many years, and author/editor of “An Historical Account of all the Voyages round the World”, published in 4 volumes in 1773-4, to which in 1775 was added a fifth volume containing the Resolution voyage (i.e. the present account), and in 1786 a sixth, with an account of Cook’s third voyage (Rickman’s account). Hocken notes that “The preface discloses considerable knowledge of private matters connected with the voyage, and gives an account of the causes which led Mr. Banks and his staff to withdraw in high dudgeon from the expedition at the last moment.” The publication of Marra’s work preceded Cook’s Official Account by at least 18 months. (Melbourne); The Miegunyah Press; (1997).***Edition limited to 1000 copies for sale. Number Thirteen in the second Miegunyah Press series. A magnificent production; a long-overdue detailed analysis of Captain James Cook’s ship, fully placed in the context of her time. The “Endeavour” is one of the most famous ships in maritime history, yet surprisingly few details of her were known to any but a small number of maritime historians. More than twenty-five years ago Ray Parkin, seaman, author and artist was amazed to find how little was known and recorded of this ship, and set out to document everything he could discover. His researches were encouraged by that renowned scholar and chronicler of James Cook, Professor J. C. Beaglehole. The result is the most painstaking study of the “Endeavour” yet undertaken and a unique account of a great voyage of discovery: the passage of the “Endeavour” up the east coast of Australia (then called New Holland) in the year 1770. Written for the scholar, mariner and layperson alike, Ray Parkin has recreated for the reader the very “experience” of being on board H. M. Bark “Endeavour”. With meticulous research, he reveals what she looked like, how she sailed, 30 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books how she smelled; all aspects of daily life on board. No part of the ship or her functioning is too insignificant for his enquiries. How many strands of yarn were there in the ships cable? (954) Did the ship have a lightning conductor? (Yes) What was the diameter of the main mast? (21 inches). The work is divided into two sections: Part I, The World of the Ship, details the sailor and his environment, the Captain, the ship herself, scurvy and provisioning, the ship’s company, and remarks on individuals come to notice through misfortune or by their sins and adventures. The text is accompanied by a series of plans and figures depicting the ship’s architecture and construction, her deck plan, rigging, sails, armament, boats, cables, anchors and accommodation. Fifteen of these are reproduced as large folding full-size sketches in the accompanying folding case. Part II, The Voyage (up the east coast of Australia), is a masterly synthesis of the Ships Log and the journals of James Cook, Sidney Parkinson and Joseph Banks, supplemented where illuminating and appropriate, by extracts from the journals of other members of the ship’s complement, and with an interpretive commentary and clearly drawn explanatory charts. The Author, Ray Parkin, was born in Melbourne and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1928, spending eighteen years in the service. He was on board HMAS “Perth” in 1942 when the cruiser was sunk in Sunda Strait, killing two thirds of her complement. After the sinking Mr Parkin spent three and a half years as a Japanese prisoner of war in Java, on the Burma-Siam railway and in coal mines in Japan. His vivid accounts of these experiences in World War II were published by the Hogarth Press: “Out of the Smoke” (1960), “Into the Smother” (1963), and “The Sword and the Blossom” (1967). At the end of the war Mr Parkin completed a fine arts course. He worked on the Melbourne waterfront until his retirement in 1975 when he went to London to continue his research on the “Endeavour”. “H. M. Bark Endeavour”, is an absorbing book: discursive, erudite, at times poetic; full of wisdom, insight and information. It is an ESSENTIAL companion and supplement to the standard works on Cook’s voyages. #49819 A$450.00

Second Edition in French; pp. xvi, 200; in most attractive full contemporary vellum, gilt (a trifling stain at foot of spine only), marbled edges; a fine copy; very rare. Berne; la nouvelle Societe typographique; 1783. ***Beddie 1630; Holmes 44 (q.v.); Forbes 59; Du Rietz 1364. All early editions of this important account of Cook’s Third Voyage, published four years before the official account are very rare, the first [German] edition extremely so. It was not translated into English until 1926. This second French edition is reset from the first of the previous year but is identical apart from the ornamentation on the title-page and the date at its foot. Both French editions are of great rarity and are of particular interest as they contain additional matter not found in the original German editions or in the (very late) English translations. This additional matter comprises some brief introductory notes by one Roland (almost certainly the translator), the “Abregee” Life of Cook (pp. 118-172), and quite extensive notes (pp. 173-200 - some forty numbered items). Holmes and Du Rietz note that the “Life” appears to be a somewhat abridged translation of Lichtenberg and Georg Forster’s early life of Cook, published in Gottingen in 1780. Zimmermann was coxswain in the “Discovery” and as a foreign national (he was a native of Speyer) was able to withhold his journal despite the instructions to surrender all logs and journals which were given to all serving officers and men. As a low-ranking member of the expedition his account gives an interesting and different perspective from the other accounts of Cook’s third voyage. Holmes notes that “his appreciation of Cook’s character deserves to rank with that of Samwell.” #8241 A$25,000.00 36 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 191 Zimmermann, Heinrich: ZIMMERMANN’S ACCOUNT OF THE THIRD VOYAGE OF CAPTAIN COOK 1776-1780. London; Golden Cockerel Press; [1937]. ***Edition limited to 300 numbered copies printed on mould-made paper. A handsome production and an important work, being the first publication of Bligh’s original log. The first volume (undated) was issued late in 1936, see Du Rietz 1125. See also Pertelote 117: “In the light of enquiry, it seems clear that this was the first ship’s log to be published with full details. The transcription from the Admiralty records alone took three months, and the setting presented many difficulties. All the events of the day were recorded on the page devoted to that day in the space allotted to the hour, or even half hour, at which they were recorded. When necessary, hand-writing can be compressed, but not so type. The easy solution would have been to use various type-sizes, but this would have produced an ugly irregularity throughout the book. By arduous calculation, a standard setting able to absorb all irregularities was evolved. The volumes are unpretentious, and, if they have any beauty, it is like that inherent in good machinery, and resides in their functional simplicity--to be recognised by the expert, who can compare them in his mind’s eye with the horrid spectre of what, with less ambitious care, they would have been.” #21834 A$4000.00

The Author left England for New South Wales on a convict ship from Deptford, on March 7, 1837, having signed the ship’s articles to conform with regulation requirements (unfortunately he keeps the name of the ship as secret as his own), and arrived at Sydney Cove on July 18. He spent about two-and-a-half years in New South Wales, and gives descriptions of the country and the life of the inhabitants, the fauna, the native people, etc. He then proceeded to New Zealand, which in the course of nine or ten years he visited three times (vide Bagnall; also Hocken - “Spirited journal of adventure in almost every island of the Pacific”). Amongst the places visited, apart from the main groups, are Lord Howe Island, Phillip Island, Norfolk Island, Nepean Island, Isle of Pines, Fanning Island, Pitcairn Island (where he found 116 descendants of the “Bounty” mutineers), and many others. He was present at Tahiti during the annexation proceedings by Admiral du Petit-Thouars, and gives substantial account of them, and it was here that he established himself as a Pacific Islands merchant/trader. During the course of his voyages he revisited Sydney twice. He also visited San Francisco and as Hill notes “gives a very unflattering picture of San Francisco and Sacramento during the height of the gold rush.” The work is a fascinating, first-hand record of life and adventure in the Pacific. #2222 A$1350.00

The Briton visited several places on the South American coast, but was ordered from Brazil to find the American frigate, U.S.S. London; Hamilton, Adams, and Co.; MDCCCXLIII [1843]. ***Ferguson 3558. The work is of major importance containing much detailed and valuable information on the state of the colonies at the time. Backhouse was a quaker missionary who Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 51 arrived in Hobart with George Washington Walker in 1832, spent three years in Van Diemen’s Land, and later visited nearly all the scattered Australian settlements. During their travels he made natural history observations and collected a valuable herbarium which was sent to Kew Gardens. Backhouse’s medical knowledge also proved very valuable, and he gave much assistance to the sick and wounded in the colonies. In Van Diemen’s Land they were granted access by Governor Arthur to all the penal establishments and aboriginal settlements and was encouraged to make observations and suggest improvements. In New South Wales they were encouraged by Governor Bourke to make similar observations and visited and described the penal settlements of Norfolk Island, Moreton Bay and Port Macquarie and the Aboriginal station at Wellington Valley. In 1837 they also visited Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, all still then in their infancy, promoting temperance and protection of the Aborigines. The extensive appendices include remarks on Judicial Oaths, Indigenous Vegetable Productions of Tasmania, Chain Gangs, Penal Discipline; a letter fom a convict; addresses to the prisoner and free populations of the colonies; letters to Governor Bourke on the Aborigines; details of Quaker meetings, etc. #25220 A$1350.00

Excellent use is made of the journals of Denham and his officers to create a detailed vision of mid- nineteenth-century surveying and charting techniques. Significant forays were made into botanical and ornithological studies, much of which are detailed here. Its anthropological content clearly illustrates the paradoxical nature of the south-west Pacific at the time of the voyages, where missionary, colonist and the lords of commerce co-existed with the native peoples in an often uneasy alliance. Included is an account of the resettlement of the Pitcairn Islanders on Norfolk Island. This is number 3 in the second Miegunyah Press series; only 1200 copies were printed. #46753 A$95.00

London; John Stockdale; 1793. ***Ferguson 152 (q.v.). Apart from the work’s general and obvious importance, it should be noted that the plate facing Page 77 - “View of the Settlement on Sydney Cove, Port Jackson 20th August, 1788”, Drawn by S. Dayes from a Sketch of I. Hunter”, executed less than eight months after the arrival of the First Fleet, is the earliest pictorial representation of the settlement. There is much on Norfolk Island, including a plan. The title-page was engraved too large for the size of the text with the consequence that most copies lack either the word “AN” at the top or the date at the foot: in this copy the top of the letters “AN” is just shaved, with a clear centimetre below the date at the foot. #22826 A$6750.00
