TODAY The Avalanche takes on the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of their second round Stanley Cup Playoff series. The Avs defeated the Arizona Coyotes in five games during the opening round. The Avs are now 6-1-1 so far in these playoffs. Colorado has advanced to the second round in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2004-06. The Avs are the No. 2 seed in the West after finishing 2-1 (technically 2-0-1) during the round robin portion of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers.

AVS & STARS This marks the fifth postseason meeting between the Avalanche and Stars. Dallas beat Colorado in back-to-back Conference Finals in 1999 and 2000 and then the Avs beat Dallas in consecutive first round matchups in 2004 and 2006. Dallas won all four meetings during the 2019-20 regular season (Colorado was 0-2-2) but the Avs shut out the Stars 4-0 in the round robin portion of the Stanley Cup Playoff Qualifiers.

CONNECTIONS Valeri Nichushkin was drafted by Dallas (10th overall in 2013) and played for the Stars ... Blake Comeau played for Colorado ... Ben Bishop was born in Denver.

GAME 1 Colorado has won the first game of a playoff series 21 times since moving to Denver. They have gone on to win 16 of those 21 series (16-5, .762).

PICK YOUR POISON Colorado is the NHL's highest scoring team this postseason, averaging 3.88 goals-per-game, and has also allowed the fewest goals-per-game, yielding just 1.63 per contest.

GETTING OFFENSIVE The Avalanche tallied 22 goals in the first round series against Arizona, tying the franchise record for a five-game series. The Quebec Nordiques also scored 22 in the 1985 Division Semifinals vs. Buffalo. It was the most goals by any team in a five-game series since the Penguins tallied 22 against Ottawa in the 2013 Conference Semifinal. Colorado wrapped up the series with consecutive 7-1 victories in Games 4-5, scoring seven goals in back-to- back playoff games for the first time in franchise history. The Avs were the first NHL team to score seven-plus goals in consecutive playoff games since the Flyers in the 2012 Conference Quarterfinal versus Pittsburgh and became the fourth team in NHL history to do so in the final two games of a series (see chart below). It was the first time in NHL history a team has won the final two contests of a series by six-plus goals.

STREAKING Nathan MacKinnon has notched a point in all eight games this postseason, which is tied for the second-longest point streak to start a playoff year in franchise history. MacKinnon's streak is the longest in the NHL this postseason and equals his playoff career high set last year (April 13-May 2, 2019).

Only four players in franchise history have recorded points in nine straight playoff games at ANY point: Joe Sakic (10 in 1996), Marian Stastny (10 in 1982), Claude Lemieux (9 in 1997) and Peter Stastny (9 in 1982).

THE KADRI MAN CAN Nazem Kadri is tied for the NHL lead with six goals this postseason. He has a league-leading five power-play goals, the most by an Avalanche player in a single postseason since Joe Sakic had five in 2001. In fact, it's tied for the third-most power-play goals in a playoff year in franchise history (see below). Four of those five PPG came in the Arizona series, matching the franchise record for a playoff series. Kadri shares the league lead with three game-winning goals and also ranks among the top five in points (11) and shots (33). Kadri has scored twice in each of the last two games, becoming the sixth player in franchise history to register a multi-goal performance in consecutive playoff games (last: Mikko Rantanen in 2019).

GREAT NATE Nathan MacKinnon shares the league lead with 13 points (5g/8a) this postseason, matching his career high for a single playoff set a year ago. Nathan equaled his playoff career high with four points (2g/2a) in Game 5 vs. Arizona. He became the second Avalanche/Nordiques player with four points in a series-clinching contest, joining Claude Lemieux in Game 6 of the 1997 Conference Quarterfinals (1g/3a at Chicago). MacKinnon’s three points in the second period of Game 5 tied the franchise playoff record for a single frame.

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG SHOT The Avs are allowing the fewest shots-per-game this postseason (24.1) and rank third in shots-taken-per-game (37.3). Colorado out-shot Arizona 185- 108 during the first round series (37.0 to 21.6). The Avalanche set a franchise playoff record by allowing just 14 shots-on-goal in their Game 1 win and gave up only 15 in Game 4, tied for the second fewest ever. Colorado fired 51 shots-on-net in the Game 3 loss, just the sixth 50+ shot performance in franchise playoff history and only the second in a non-overtime finish (Game 3 of 2019 FR vs. Calgary). Colorado's +28 shot differential in Game 3 (51- 23) was the largest in franchise playoff annals.

SOMETHING "SPECIAL" Colorado has the league's No. 1 ranked power play this postseason at 30.6% (11/36). The PP unit finished the first-round series going 3-for-7 in Game 4 and 3-for-4 in Game 5, combining for a 55% success rate over those two contests (6-for-11). It was the first time Colorado scored three or more PPG in consecutive playoff games since April 24-26, 1997. The Avalanche's penalty killing ranks fifth in the NHL at 88.0% (22/25). The PK unit allowed only one goal the Arizona series, killing 14-of-15 (93.3%).

FEELING GRUBI Philipp Grubauer is 5-0-1 with a 1.49 GAA and .937 Sv% this postseason, which included a 4-0 mark in the Arizona series with a 1.00 GAA, .953 Sv% and one shutout. He now has a 12-5-1 record with a 2.03 GAA and .928 Sv% in 18 postseason games with Colorado. His 12 wins rank second in Avalanche history, trailing only Patrick Roy (81), and tie Dan Bouchard for third in franchise history behind Roy and Mario Gosselin (16). Grubauer's two postseason shutouts trail only Roy's 18, while his .928 Sv% is the highest (min 10 GP)

POSTSEASON PRODUCTION Nathan MacKinnon has 42 points (15g/27a) in 33 career playoff games, the fourth-highest points-per-game average (1.27) in playoff history (min 30 GP).

1.84 Wayne Gretzky 1.61 Mario Lemieux 1.53 Barry Pederson 1.27 Nathan MacKinnon 1.25 Mark Messier 1.24 Bobby Orr 1.24 Mike Bossy

MAKAR SETS ROOKIE MARK Cale Makar's seven points (2g/5a) this postseason have set a new franchise record for scoring by a rookie defenseman in a single playoff year. He topped the previous mark of six set by Jeff Brown in 1987 and matched by Makar last year.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER The Avs are outscoring the opposition 13-4 in the third period this postseason.

PLAYOFF TIME Colorado is in the postseason for the third straight year, which ranks as the third-longest run in franchise history. The Nordiques/Avalanche made 11 straight trips to the playoffs from 1994-95 to 2005-06 and Quebec made seven straight from 1980-87. The Avs have advanced to the second round in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2004-06. This is Colorado's 35th playoff series since relocating (21-13 record). This is the 50th playoff series in franchise history (27-22) and 44th best-of-seven series (24-19). The Nordiques/Avalanche own a 149-132 all-time record in 281 playoff contests. Game 3 against Arizona was the Avalanche's 200th playoff contest since moving to Denver. They own a 115-87 record, the third-most wins since 1996 behind Detroit (145) and Pittsburgh (133).

CUP WINNERS Three Avalanche players have won a Stanley Cup: Ian Cole (2016 and 2017 with Pittsburgh), Andre Burakovsky and Philipp Grubauer (both 2018 with the Capitals).

BUZZER BEATER Nazem Kadri scored the game-winning goal with 0.1 seconds on the clock in the Avalanche's 2-1 victory over St. Louis on Aug. 2. It marked just the second go-ahead goal at 19:59 of the third period in postseason history, joining Jussi Jokinen in Game 4 of the 2009 CQF against New Jersey. Jokinen's goal, however, came with 0.2 left and thus unofficially Kadri's marker could be called the "latest" regulation winner in playoff history.

PLAYOFF OT Colorado was a league-best 3-0 in overtime last postseason. Colorado/Quebec is 40-29 all-time in playoff OT, 30-21 since moving to Denver. Five current players have scored a playoff OT goal
