CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIVERSITY OF CERAMBICIDS (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELOIDEA: CERAMBYCIDAE) FROM OLTENIA FAUNA, ROMANIA

Abstract. The paper presents data on the diversity of Cerambycidae species from Oltenia (South-Western Romania) based on bibliographical sources (1865-2010). Taxa list includes 156 species from 86 genera and 37 tribes, belonging to 5 subfamilies, identified in 205 collection sites.

INTRODUCTION
The longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae; also known as Long-horned beetles or Longicorns) are a cosmopolitan family of beetles, typically characterized by extremely long antennae, which are often as long as or longer than the beetle's body. In various members of the family, however, the antennae are quite short and such species can be difficult to distinguish from related beetle families such as Chrysomelidae. This family is classified in the superfamily Chrysomeloidea. The family is large, with over 40,000 species described worldwide. A total of 677 native species are known to occur in Europe. Longhorn beetles are all phytophagous. Several are serious pests, with the larvae boring into wood, where they can cause extensive damage to either living trees or untreated lumber (or, occasionally, to wood in buildings; the old-house borer, Hylotrupes bajulus, being a particular problem indoors). A number of species mimic ants, bees, and wasps, though a majority of species are cryptically colored. Oltenia entirely includes the counties: Gorj, Dolj and parts of the counties: MehedinXi (mainly in Oltenia, but the western part belongs to Banat), Vâlcea (mainly in Oltenia, but the eastern part belongs to Muntenia), Olt (the western half, the former RomanaXi County), Teleorman (only the village Islaz) (Fig. 1).

MATERIALS AND METHODS
The paper presents data on the diversity of Cerambycidae from Oltenia based on bibliographical sources. The data concerning the distribution of Longhorned beetles in Oltenia were published the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century by FRIVALDSKY (1865), KUTHY (1900), CSIKI (1904, 1905), VÁNGEL (1906), MARCU (1928, 1929). The data from the period 1949-1975 were published by GEORGESCU et al. (1949), PANIN & S:VULESCU (1961), S:VULESCU (1969, 1972), NEGRU (1971), IENI1TEA (1975). 112

A first synthesis of the data of literature in the period 1928-1998, on the Carpathian region of Oltenia, was published by BOBÎRNAC et al. (1999). Numerous data on species diversity were taken from the collections catalogues of museums in Bucharest, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Craiova, Târgu Mure2 [SERAFIM (1985, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010); BOTU (1998); SERAFIM et al. (2004); TOG:NEL (2004); SERAFIM & CHIMI1LIU (2009)]. We also mention the papers concerning protected natural areas in Oltenia: IENI1TEA (1975), RUIC:NESCU (1992, 1992a; 1997), RUIC:NESCU & PATKO (1995), CHIMI1LIU (2006, 2007, 2007a, 2008, 2008a), TATOLE et al. (2009). Nomenclature and systematical order are according to those used by SAMA (2005) in “Fauna Europaea”, DANILEVSKY (2007) in “A check-list of Longicorn Beetles (Coleoptera, Cerambycoidea) of Europe”, HOSKOVEC & REJZEK (2009) in “Longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) of the West Palaearctic region” and LOBL & SMETANA (2010) in “Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera”. The species mentioned in the consulted papers were collected in those five counties of Oltenia. Collection sites are presented within those five counties, in alphabetical order). RESULTS AND DISSCUSIONS
The species were reported from 202 collection sites located in five counties of Oltenia: Dolj (62 sites), MehedinXi (56 sites), Gorj (37), Valcea (25 sites), Olt (22 sites). 156 species of longhorn beetles are presented. They belong to 5 subfamilies, 37 tribes, and 86 genera as it follows: Cerambycinae (13 tribes, 25 genera and 48 species), Lamiinae (13 tribes, 25 genera and 53 species), Lepturinae (5 tribes, 28 genera and 46 species), Prioninae (2 tribes, 2 genera and 2 species), Spondylidinae (4 tribes, 6 genera and 7 species).

Common species of cerambicids have been reported from the fauna of Oltenia, as well as rare species, some protected, of communitary and national interest.

Special faunistic elements In 1961, in the fauna fascicle (PANIN & S:VULESCU, op.cit.), the authors anticipated the presence of Akimerus schaefferi in Romania. Its presence in the Romanian fauna was confirmed by ANDRIESCU in 1972, who recorded it at P;ltinoasa (Suceava County). The species was found later on by Ph.D. Nicolae S;v;lescu, in MehedinXi County, at Ghelmegioaia, in 1972, and at Gura V;ii, in 1978 (SERAFIM, 2005). In 1992, RUIC:NESCU found the species in Ogl;nic Valley, the Botanical Reserve downstream Gura V;ii. Pedostrangalia revestita, a very rare species, is distributed in Europe and in Transcaucasia. In Romania, it was reported at Dumbrava, HaXeg, Baia Mare, Bra2ov, B;ile Sl;nic, the Cindrel (Cibin) Mountains (PANIN & S:VULESCU, op.cit), M;z;ne2ti (ANDRIESCU, 1972), Craiova (SERAFIM, 1985), Bodi Ferneziu (SERAFIM, 2006).

Stictoleptura cordigera (FUESSLY) is reported in Dobrogea (M;cin, Oltina, B;neasa-Canaraua Fetii), at Ileana and Pas;rea Forest (Ilfov County), Comana Forest (Giurgiu County) (PANIN & S:VULESCU, 1961), Schela Cladovei (BOTU, 1998); Iron Gates (“PorXile de Fier”) (RUIC:NESCU, 1992a); Bucov;X (SERAFIM & CHIMI1LIU, 2009). It is distributed in Southern and Central Europe, the Balkan Peninsula, Turkey, the Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Iran, the Near East. Cerambyx cerdo (Plate I, Fig. 1) is the single species of the genus Cerambyx with protection status in Romania and Europe. In Romania, C. cerdo coexists with C. scopolii, C. miles, C. nodulosus, and C. welensii. In Romania, Cerambyx miles (Plate I, Fig. 2) was reported at Or2ova (CSIKI, 1904); B;ile Herculane, Cleanov, Apold, Sibiu, Pite2ti (PANIN & S:VULESCU, op.cit.), Comana Forest, Pas;rea Forest (SERAFIM, 1985), RacoviXa, Bucov;X, Leamna (SERAFIM et al., 2004). It occurs in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, the Near East, the Caucasus, Transcaucasus. Cerambyx nodulosus (Plate I, Fig. 3) is distributed in South-Eastern Europe and the Near East. In Romania, it appears only in Banat: B;ile Herculane and Cire2u. Cerambyx welensii (Plate I, Fig. 4) occurs in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, the Near East, the Caucasus, North Africa. In Romania, it is reported at B;ile Herculane, Ineu (PANIN & S:VULESCU, op.cit.), Ogl;nic

Valley (RUIC:NESCU, 1992), Bucov;X, Leamna (SERAFIM et al., 2004); Gura V;ii, Balota, Canaraua Fetii (SERAFIM, 2010). Oplosia cinerea, a rare species, is distributed in Europe and the Near East. In Romania, it was reported at B;ile Herculane, Sibiu, Bra2ov, the Retezat Mountains – Gura Zlata (PANIN & S:VULESCU, 1961) and Pietrele Albe – Valley of the Jiu river (SERAFIM et al., 2004).

Agapanthia cynarae (Plate II, Fig. 1) was cited by CSIKI (1905) at Plavi2eviXa, by RUIC:NESCU (1992) at Ogl;nic Valley, the Iron Gates, BOTU (1998) at Gura V;ii and Schela Cladovei, from the Danube Clisura (Oreva and Sl;tinic) (SERAFIM, 2010). The species occurs in Southern and South-Eastern Europe. Gracilia minuta is one of the smallest European longhorn beetles. In Romania, the species was mentioned by PETRI (1925-1926) at Sibiu. Very few records for Romania. In Oltenia it was found in Craiova (SERAFIM et al., 2004) and E2elniXa (SERAFIM, 2009). In Romania, the species Pilemia tigrina (Plate II, Fig. 3) is reported at Bazia2 (CSIKI, 1905a); Dej, Geaca, Zau de Câmpie (PETRI, 1912), Deva (PANIN & S:VULESCU, 1961), Dealul lui Dumnezeu, Mârze2ti, “Valea lui David” Reserve, the Natural Park “Gr;di2tea Muncelului-Cioclovina”, the Natural Park “Iron Gates”, Ineu (TATOLE et al., 2009); Dumbr;veni Forest (SERAFIM, 2010). Herophila tristis (Plate II, Fig. 4) is a Southern and Central European species. It is reported only at B;ile Herculane (PANIN & S:VULESCU, op.cit.; RUIC:NESCU, 1997) and Ogl;nic Valley, the Iron Gates Natural Park (RUIC:NESCU, 1992). Neodorcadion exornatum, a rare species in Romania (especially in the Dobrudja), is also distributed in Bulgaria, European Turkey, Greece. It was found at Vârvoru de Jos (SERAFIM, 2010) (Plate II, Fig. 5). Regarding species Chlorophorus glabromaculatus we think it is a confusion with Chl. herbstii, Chlorophorus glabromaculatus occurs in Western and Central Europe. Saperda quercus occurs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, European Turkey, Greek mainland, former Yugoslavia (Incl. Serbia, Kosovo, Voivodina, Montenegro), the Near East. Its presence in Romanian fauna has to be confirmed. We should mention the species with protection regime: Referring to IUCN (the International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red List 2010 of Threatened Species, Cerambyx cerdo is included into Vulnerable category (VU). The species Cerambyx cerdo, C. miles, C. nodulosus, C. scopolii, C. welensii, Ropalopus insubricus (Plate II, Fig. 2), and Saperda punctata were included in the European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles (NIETO & KEITH, 2010) into Near Threatened category (NT). According to IUCN status of conservation, Rosalia alpina and Morimus asper funereus were included into Vulnerable category (VU). Pilemia tigrina, Cerambyx cerdo, Morimus asper funereus, Rosalia alpina and Pseudogaurotina excellens were included in the list of Natura 2000 species from Romania (TATOLE et al., 2009).
CONCLUSIONS
As it can be remarked in the bibliographical list, the longicorn beetle fauna of Oltenia is relatively well known. (of the 252 known species in the fauna of Romania, in the fauna of Oltenia 156 species have been mentioned so far, representing 61.90% of the fauna of cerambicids of Romania. Most species belong to the subfamily Lamiinae (53 species) followed by the subfamilies: Cerambycinae (48 species), Lepturinae (46 species), Spondylidinae (7 species), and Prioninae (2 species).

In the study area, there are some endangered species, they being important from the conservation point of view: Cerambyx cerdo, C. miles, C. nodulosus, C. welensii, Morimus asper funereus, Pilemia tigrina, Ropalopus insubricus, Rosalia alpina, Saperda punctata. Considering the great diversity of ecosystems in Oltenia and the fact that in Oltenia no systematic studies have been undertaken on this group of beetles, it is possible that the number of species of cerambicids in this area to be greater.
