WHILE many wake up and crave that fi rst cup of coff ee to help them get through the morning, for Lineage Coff ee’s owner, Craig Charity, it is the sense of community the delectable brew creates that drives and inspires him to continue learning and improving his craft. Believe it or not, the award-winning barista wasn’t always a coff ee connoisseur and relied on instant coff ee for his daily caff eine fi x, while he worked as a personal trainer at a local gym. “There was a coff ee bar downstairs and I was more interested in the process of the installation and the testing of the machine. Then there was the art behind making the coff ee, it intrigued me. I’m technically-minded and have always been good with my hands, so to weigh, measure and craft is something I enjoy,” smiled Craig.

I love what coffee does as it is a gateway drug to community.

In 2006 he partnered up with one of his close friends and they opened up the mobile coff ee company, Go Coff ee. “It wasn’t necessarily about the coff ee at that point, it was the process that was more attractive than the drink,” he said. The business blossomed and the duo opened up a Go Coff ee inside Mr Price in Hillcrest. It was at this coff ee bar that his love for creating the perfect cuppa truly began. George and Regina Callaghan look forward to celebrate their anniversary on Friday, 7 February. * R y e d p u ut st at te Callaghans ion Institu are a perfect match

Khethukuthula Xulu

HOW the Callaghans met, a little more than six decades ago, was fate personifi ed. What did they do for their fi rst date you ask? They babysat. Regina (83) and George (82) Callaghan were introduced to each other by George's aunt. "I was visiting friends of mine one afternoon and when I got there, I found they had made plans to go out for the evening. I decided to stay behind. Their neighbour, George's aunt saw me and told me about her nephew and insisted I meet him," said Regina. The next day George went to the complex where Regina stayed after his aunt convinced him to take Regina out.

Regina and George Callaghan on their wedding day in 1960.

"He knocked on the door and shouted 'whoever Regina is, let her know I am leaving in 10 minutes'. I thought to myself how rude and absurd he is and I waited about 30 minutes before I went to meet George," said Regina. The pair ended up babysitting George's nieces and nephews that evening. The next day George decided to take her out to make up for the previous day and their relationship continued from that moment. The couple got engaged in April 1959 during one of the regular visits to the Zoo Lake. The Callaghans got married in a Catholic church in Braamfontein. Regina worked at a children's nursing home and on their wedding day they were delighted to have the children join the ceremony. The couple will be celebrating their 60th anniversary on Friday, 7 February. The Callaghans have two daughters and four grandchildren. This couple love giving back and besides enjoying watching TV, they help out at their local church. They also love to travel and their favourite place visited is Portugal. "I keep myself busy with sewing for missions and people in need," said Regina. 8 Highway Mail | OPINION 31 January 2020

Iconic Player takes on Cotswold Downs

THE golfi ng legend, Gary Player, proved age is just a number when he took on the challenge provided by the beautiful Cotswold Downs course. The management and members of Cotswold Downs Golf Leisure Centre were thrilled to host the iconic South African golfer. "I always enjoy coming to Durban as I won the South African Open at Durban Country Club a couple of times. Nicklaus and I played there in 1965 and I beat Bobby Locke in a 36-hole playoff there as a young man. So it’s got special memories for me," said Gary. This was his fi rst visit to Cotswold Downs and he delighted club members and their families by taking the time to meet with them and share stories from his past. As would be expected of a pro of his stature, he couldn’t wait to play the course and he took to it extremely quickly. He shot a 1-over par on the front nine, and 76 for the 18 holes overall.
