The event itself was run very well and the volunteers from the Ohio Valley Region did a great job with keeping things cool and people hydrated by giving away water. They had an Enduro race on Saturday and a Sprint race on Sunday. Dan participated in both. On Saturday he shared a ride with Leo Wanstreet in his white 911 for the Enduro. The Sprint race got a bit exciting when Doug Brown spun in front of Dan but luckily all made it through the dust. Dan survived and went on to place third in his class. Of course he is already thinking about the next race and the improvements he can make to do better. Wait a minute…Aren’t Porsche Club Tours held in the fall? Perhaps someone failed to wake me whilst I slept through four months of the calen- dar, Rip Van Winkle-like. Or, could I possibly have hit the snooze button 17,280 times in a row???
No – it’s the inaugural RSR PCA June Zoom. A color tour where the pri- mary color was green. As in farmland. And there was red, as in rural barns in various states of collapse. And yellow, as in road signs with squiggly lines on them advising of curvy sections ahead. And of course silver, black, red, white, blue, gold, etc. – the colors of the 17 participating mostly-Porsche automobiles.
46 years of Porsche’s finest were represented - from 1956 Speedster to 2002 Boxster. For the first time in memory no 944’s were seen. The wa- ter-cooled contingent was well represented by three 928s (that’s SIX 944 engines worth…), as well as several Boxsters and 996 Carreras. The route meandered in a generally northern direction into the Thumb. Early twisty bits gave way to the straighter sections of Michigan farming country as the group approached Bay City. Along the way, a refreshment break in Attica Park allowed for a welcome stretch of the legs. Of course, the navi- gators had a secondary task – counting railroad crossings along the way. Guesses had been submitted at sign-in, and the team coming closest to the actual count would receive valuable prizes and certain notoriety! How- ever, having seen no crossings up to the rest stop, the team that had guessed 30 crossings (!) was beginning to doubt their chances to win.
The end destination was the Stein Haus, a German-themed pub in Bay City. Surrounded by an antique stein collection and numerous fascinating 2002 Boxster ”S” meets a ‘56 Speedster artifacts, the group enjoyed a fine buffet dinner and reviewed the day’s drive. One team did correctly predict the railroad crossing count (5), but were unable to stay for dinner to collect their prize (you must be present to win…). Jim & Liz Christopher were the lucky beneficiaries with a guess of seven crossings. A second prize went to the newest club members, El & Mary Pizarek, who won by a narrow one-month margin.
The date for the Fall Color Tour is not yet finalized, but we suggest that you hold the first two Sundays in October open. Speaking of which, we are seeking volunteer Chairperson(s) for this event. We are willing to train – it’s easy and fun! What could be difficult about scouting country roads in your favorite sports car?
