Final Program Course Description

For thirty-two years , San Diego Shoulder Institute has been recognized as the undisputed best shoulder course in the world. This year promises to be our best yet. The course is customized for individuals to select tracks to maximize individual practice. The purpose of this course is to provide strategies to equip physicians to provide the highest level of analytical, diagnostic, and treatment practice modalities specific to shoulder arthroscopy, arthroplasty, fracture management, and complex shoulder care. Bringing together expert faculty, course content focuses on known best practice, latest technological advances, and evidence based research related to shoulder care. Physicians will benefit directly from the following formats of educational interaction: Lecture Sessions: • Our lecture faculty are renowned for being the best in the shoulder industry. Don’t miss the opportunity to visualize and hear current approaches and technical pearls. • Receive immediate feedback to your questions. • Review assessment and diagnostic strategies, specific surgical techniques, treatment algorithms, prevention of complications, and recommendations to maximize physician practice and patient outcomes. Panel Discussions: • Learn from the experts during dynamic case study presentations and discussions. BREAK-OUT SESSIONS : These customized sessions are specifically designed to allow participants to achieve learning goals specific to his/her own practice. Held in small-group settings, our expert faculty lead discussions and present specific information regarding expert practice, tips and pearls to improve practice and prevent complications, and how to handle difficult cases. The sessions are dynamic and interactive. Latarjet Techniques: Review the specific tips and tricks to reproducibly perform this demanding procedure. Our experts will review how to avoid complications and safely navigate around the potentially perilous anatomy that surrounds the Latarjet “envelope.” Tips for Reverse TSR: Hear the experts give their tips for ensuring stability, reducing complications, and optimizing function. This session will also cover current research and controversies regarding indications for the procedure. Fractures: Our faculty will review essential considerations for proximal humerus, clavicle, scapular, and other challenging fractures. Hear expert opinion on the entire wide-range of treatment options. Arthroscopy for Big Cuff Tears: If you are looking to improve your skills at repairing even the most difficult of rotator cuff tears, this session is a “must.” The faculty will “drill down” to give you precise parameters for vital decision points, including how to determine the proper end-point of each phase of the repair, how to obtain dramatic increases in excursion of retrated rotator cuff tears, how to maximally reinforce poor quality tendons to ensure secure repairs, and how to mobilize and repair the subscap. This session will provide you with tools so that essentially every subscap tear will be reparable. Our faculty will also review the role of superior capsular reconstruction in the unusual “irreparable tear,” and how to minimize the need for reverse TSR by maximizing the ability to successfully restore rotator cuff function. What You Need to Know About Instability: This session will cover considerations in the treatment of instability and what to address in the process of patient selection to ensure a successful outcome. Our experts will cover questions such as: How do you decide if an instability patient needs an arthroscopic , remplissage, or Latarjet? How do you address loss in the contact athlete? What about first-time dislocators? Hear experts give their views on these important questions as well as their technical tips in performing these operations. Getting It Right or Just Getting By: The Preferred Approach to Calcific Tendinitis, Os Acromiale, and Suprascapular Nerve Entrapment. Our faculty will cover topics never before addressed in an educational interactive forum. This session will cover examination, imaging, and surgical techniques. Patient Specific Drill Guides for Arthroplasty: Indications and Effectiveness: Patient Specific Drill Guides are a growing trend. Our faculty will lead a dynamic discussion regarding their effectiveness and indications for use. Evaluation and Treatment of the Throwing Shoulder: This session provides an opportunity to experience the impact of throwing shoulder etiologies in a format that is seldom offered. We bring together expert team physicians, professional trainers, and pitching staff who can directly relate patho-mechanics of the throwing shoulder to the clinical situation in real-time analysis. • Visit PETCO Park Baseball Field! • Join team physicians and staff for a didactic and on the field demonstration on prevention, evaluation, and treatment of shoulder throwing injuries.

Individualized Case Presentation Sessions: • Don’t miss the opportunity to present your most complex case to our panel of experts. • Receive direct feedback regarding your most burning questions: • How can you improve outcomes? • Different surgical approaches? • Alternative treatment options? • Glean best practice strategies based on the expertise of our all-star faculty.

Laboratories/Workshops: Receive individualized instruction in a mock surgical environment. Customize your learning experience based on your identified educational goals. Benefit from our expert faculty who will provide specific feedback to help improve your specific practice.

• Arthroscopy Skills Session: Begin this informative session with a didactic presentation of essential tips and pearls from our experts. Then break out into your selected session to customize your learning goals. The session uses realistic shoulder models to teach bankart and scope hands-on skills. • Cadaver Arthroscopy/Latarjet Surgical Laboratory: This session allows participants to actively perform an arthroscopy procedure on a cadaveric specimen. Expert faculty will guide students in essential arthroscopic diagnostic and operative techniques. Students will then move on to receive individualized instruction on the highly specialized Latarjet technique. Receive expert recommendations and practice on a cadaveric specimen. Sessions are customized based on individualized learning goals and current skill level. Potential of two students per cadaver. • Cadaver Total Shoulder Small-Group Laboratory: This dynamic lab features world- recognized experts in total /reverse total shoulder. A brief lecture covering technique essentials is followed by individualized instruction. Instruction is customized based on the learner’s skill level and identified educational goals. Potential of two students per cadaver. • Exclusive Personalized Instructional Cadaver Lab: Don’t miss this educational chance of a lifetime! Receive one on one instruction from one of our expert faculty. You select the instructor and the procedure! Space is extremely limited. Register now! • Mini-Executive Fellowship: Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: This session is designed to teach the steps of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using life-like models and a portable arthroscopic camera. Participants will have the opportunity to perform a complete rotator cuff repair following step-by-step demonstration by the instructor. Anchor insertion and knot tying will complete the session. Each student will receive supplemental educational material prior to the session. Course requirements: You must bring a current laptop (preferably a MAC) to the session. • Rehabilitation Session: We have brought together a dynamic and recognized team of physicians and therapists to present the most pressing and relevant topics related to shoulder rehabilitation today. Join our team as they lead presentations related to diagnosis and treatment of shoulder injuries and etiologies. Learn tips of pre-operative assessment, post-operative care, and preventative strategies. Then break out into a small-group structured special interest topic session of your choice. Special interest topics include (select one session) : • Assessment of High Impact Sports: Crossfit, etc. • Considerations for the Throwing Shoulder • Comprehensive Shoulder Examination • Shoulder Arthroplasty and Fracture Fixation Workshop: This session demonstrates current techniques to treat shoulder arthritis and trauma. Participants are exposed to multiple equipment options to practice arthroplasty and fracture fixation techniques. No pre-registration required. You won’t want to miss this session! • Luncheon Workshop Series: Presented by expert physicians in the field! No Charge! • Held Thursday and Friday, attend special luncheon workshop sessions of your choice regarding latest advances in Arthroplasty, Arthroscopy, and special topics. Presented by the experts in the field. Register early
